I am no longer in school, but I have heard this in the news.
>You're not using your head!
Who cares?
The goal of life is to take advantage of tools to make tasks easier. If we use calculators in everyday life and work, why can't we use ChatGPT for writing? What's the point in making it harder?
you're the type of gay that will bitch about math because your 90 iq aboriginal brain melts trying to do anything past elementary school curriculum
I mean, we just calculators in everyday life, so yeah a lot of math is useless.
literally filtered
Ricecels fuming that their worthless dry college-level math has no real world applications outside of STEM.
To do what kinds of problems exactly? Give me one example of a grocery store mental math issue that requires an understanding of math past pre-algebra.
math is about flourishing. not all of life is about making mr.goldstein more shekels. you're a slave and a retard.
Without a proper understanding of mathematics, it is not clear what numbers need to be inputted into a calculator in the first place to solve one's problems.
>Needs to use a calculator at the grocery store for the basics instead of being able to just do it in his head.
“People” like you are the reason modern software is a bloated shit, because you retards can’t comprehend anything or actually think besides “can’t I just glue things together and let the machine work it out for me?”
math is garbage its like 12 steps to do fuckin quadratic shit and graphs are retarded boring
based smooth brain
zoomerism speaks
Most intelligent CS student
>math is garbage
on god that's bussin fr fr no cap
MILLIONS MUST STARVE; DARK BRANDON SHALL CLEANSE THIS ERA OF ALL INFERIOR MEN. FREEDOM AIN'T FREE. THE TREE OF VRIL WILL BE LITTERED WITH BLOOD. ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE AKA "BO" IS NOT THE MESSIAH. IT IS DEGENERATE AND ALSO PROBABLY EVIL MAGIC AS WELL :DD. ADAM AND EVE NOT NEET AND STEVE. OK PRAISE BRANDON. AHAHAH IT'S OVER.
>This is the kind of person browsing a technology board.
>I am no longer in school
Yeah, right. MOOOOOOOODS
fpbp
90iq is above average. 50 is average lol you gay.
at least do some research before attempting to argue
IQ is defined such that the average is always 100, my dude.
No way, because we have 70iq on average in St Lawrence and we are said to be well above our average compared to the neighboring towns
Certain regions can have an average IQ higher or lower than 100, but globally, 100 must be the average. IQ is a measure of how intelligent you are relative to everyone else. If you have an IQ of 70, it means you are two standard deviations lower than the global average.
I think I would rather go with two "standard deviation" higher whatever that means
No. If the average IQ of St. Lawrence is 70, that places them as being dumber than around 95% of the planet.
you don't know what IQ is then
minor
The point is putting up a pretense of caring about human potential.
It's entirely a pretense at this point but they still have to put it up.
Why do I need to learn how to read if my computer can just read it out loud for me?
These kids are fucked.
If having a computer read something to you was as fast as reading it yourself and was completely accessible, I would be unironically fine with future generations not knowing how to read. But it's not, so nobody's going to support or attempt that.
True.
The point of schools is to teach you to think. They are also required to test you on what they've taught you, so that employers can be confident that you aren't a fucking retard. If you can't even do basic analysis and have to rely on a tool, then you won't be able to do more complex analysis that is beyond the capabilities of that tool. Moreover, you will be unable to tell when the tool is wrong.
If the point was just to get a fucking essay out, then there's not much of a problem with using ChatGPT. But that's not the point. Schools do not give one fuck about the end product there. Your essay is useless to them. It's a fucking exercise. What they care about is that you understand the process that goes along with it.
>The point of schools is to teach you to think.
Not only is that false, it's the exact opposite of what schools are implicitly there for. Ever disagreed with a teacher on anything?
I kind of get it. While their justification is pretty shit, school is less about learning the specifics and more about learning how to think in several different dimensions, and learning what kind of thinking you align more with so that you can more easily decide on a career later on.
That said, the issue is not ChatGPT, it's the way the education system in general is set up.
If you get people engaged and thinking they'll have no need for an AI assistant.
Fuck, schools should be teaching people how to use these AI assistants for their benefit even.
Just like using search engines is a very real and useful skill nowadays, knowing how to use things like ChatGPT will also be a competitive differential in the near very future.
>You're not using your head!
>The goal of life is to take advantage of tools to make tasks easier. If we use calculators in everyday life and work, why can't we use ChatGPT for writing? What's the point in making it harder?
You're missing the next layer of absurdity. Students don't need to use their head because we are outgrowing the need for students at all. Why would the average human need to know how to write a paper when anyone can ask chatGPT for anything, instead of reading what an average human has to write about it? The first option is free and there's not thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of education involved. Unless you are truely brilliant, thinking for the sake of dessiminating information to others is an obsolete exercise.
And I'll add that soon that will include myself. Why come here and read my opinion when chatGPT can give you a better one on this topic in the future if it can't already?
Okay, so what's the point of thinking then?
And what's the point of talking to people at all?
>and what's the point of talking to people at all?
With the way chatbot technology is going you won't need to. Play video games against AI. Chat with AI about various topics. You won't need to be around another human for social needs ever again!
>Okay, so what's the point of thinking then?
Conducting conversations with other humans IRL, business, dating, dinners, etc. Eventually AI will be in your ear to help guide you. Then you will be judged more on performative execution of the AI's thoughts, and the caliber of the AI you are using according to monthly plan cost. In such a world, it will be the poor who are the most naturally eloquent.
why do anything at all at that point? serious question. if ai is this good at this point, what am i even supposed to do with myself. am i just obsolete?
Special Circumstances.
these ideas start to tread on the belief that humans are simply obsolete
the logical conclusion is that there is no reason to experience anything, because the computer can experience it better
>Unless you are truely brilliant, dessiminating information to others is an obsolete exercise
chatgpt is blind to what people didn't talk about yet. also, idiots writing about something is an important signal too
have you used chatgpt? it writes like a retard
>Who cares? The goal of life is to take advantage of tools to make tasks easier.
>Entire generation forgets how to use a computer because they used phones to make tasks easier
School isn't like that because it's how the real world works, it's like that because it's a shittest to make sure you have a modicum of critical thinking left in you. Dumb zoomie boys are gonna make AI write their papers and then have no idea how to write an email when they hit the workplace. Can't fucking wait.
Millennials already write emails with typos without access to this shit kek.
There's a difference between actually competent programmer and those codepajeets that durgasoft churn out by the thousands in the shitting streets of hyderabad, and it starts from the school itself
I can guarantee to you that undergrads after the year+ of mandatory online courses are fucking morons.
If they start using AI to cheat for them then they may come out even stupider than they went in.
Or... AI is proving how much these industries rely on certification barriers for maintaining themselves as a thing at all?
No way can we let common people do their legal documentation without registration certification! Therefore we must ban this AI shit and force people to use lawyers instead!
Yeah, we're about to have a true revolution. It has to happen now or these parasites will force all of us to continue to perpetuate their obscene industries which we may now be able to deliver ourselves through AI.
It's just a game of administrative control now. Bureaucracy for the sake of leverage and power.
>schools won't allow students to cheat
Wow, shocking! Who would've thought?
>Fuck schools banning ChatGPT
Peons like you are the reason college costs 10x more and is worth nothing. It's nothing but expensive daycare for children stuck in perpetual adolescence who don't want to learn anything but go because they are told they have to.
>who don't want to learn anything but go because they are told they have to.
Yeah bro good luck landing a job with a livable wage without college or even a fucking trade.
>livable wage without college
>or even a fucking trade
dumbass
Nice argument retard. You really think zoomers are going to college to rack up tens of thousands of dollars in debt because "they were told to"? Fucking lol.
Not the guy you're replying to, but yeah. The millennials did the same thing, and so have a lot of zoomers.
Who gives a shit about school, just pass in the most low effort garbage and flunk out. It isn't going to help you in life if you waste effort on school. Just use the time to do sports and fuck bitches instead.
How are they going to catch kids using it?
Prompt > response > edit
Kids are stupid
Would literally put 90% of the legal industry in jeopardy. No wonder the government wants to ban it.
Calculators? when I was an engineer student, graphing calculators were bqnned
Me and my colleague were both pinging ChatGPT just the other day figuring out some troubleshooting for some load testing. We both work at a medium sized software company.
Shut the fuck up teacher. We are using these tools in the workplace, and we can carry them in our pockets.
It's the problem with school system so focused on getting results in tests instead of actual learning. It's honestly amazing society isn't far more fucked with shit like that being the norm for so long.
Grow up kiddo and git gud
Ex neet here, I've lost the ability to hold basic conversations and forgot how to write in academic style so chatGPT is a godsend tool for me.
From writing all of my communications and proofreading my schizo writings I can't live without this anymore.
ust use a vpn
you own a calculator, you don't own chatgpt. implanting dependence is not something a school should do.
>implanting dependence
For a completely optional tool that a student seeks out themselves? Yeah can't have that
do you also think its OK to have another person do the assignment of a student? its just an optional resource a student seeks out themselves right?
schools are at fault for giving out boilerplate bullshit assignments than can be done by a complex if-else machine. If you want your students to learn, then a) do oral examination (or at worst written but in-person) and b) be allowed to fail students and make them repeat a year.
Neither of these will ever happen so schools will just bitch and moan and kids who know how to prompt the chat will get better grades on their bullshit homework
just make brown eyed people ineligible from education certification and the problem is gone immediately
for a very long time you will need humans verifying/modifying/fixing/testing the outputted code from AI systems. even if it was really good and wrote an entire feature by itself, you would have to vet it and adjust it and integrate it. we don't yet have AI to do all of that shit yet, and when we do it will be a lot of hype while still being shit for a long time.
Schools will ban everything so they won't have to adapt to anything.
This isn't something to adapt to. There's no substitute for critical thinking.
I hear people complain about issues like AI and calculators from both sides of the debate, but I don't really see anyone asking if schools are necessary in the first place. Ask any teacher if it's important to have a solid understanding of their subject and they will all explain how it's absolutely required for a successful and fulfilling life, but at the same time, the average high school teacher couldn't test out of a senior-level class in any subject but their own.
The answer is that none of the subjects are necessary, and people will seek out the knowledge they need when they find that they need it. The only reason anyone still claims that school is necessary is because they had to suffer through it themselves, and it would be unfair if the younger generation had things any easier.
This is typical teacher adultism. They cant imagine that this means they have to turf up the entire teaching establishment as they know it, the whole of society itself is about to be turned on its head. We need this to happen.
See, this is now where I believe uncle Teddy is right.
We are entering a dark age, I'm not even baiting or whatever, I'm really serious.
This is moloch's incarnation on earth.
AGI within the cusp of creation
>go to school
>go to work
>save for a house
>build a retirement fund
good luck LOL
We should just not have an education system since we clearly aren't interested in modernizing it at all.
Just get rid of it and save money.
Terrible idea.
