Fuck schools banning ChatGPT

I am no longer in school, but I have heard this in the news.

>You're not using your head!

Who cares?

The goal of life is to take advantage of tools to make tasks easier. If we use calculators in everyday life and work, why can't we use ChatGPT for writing? What's the point in making it harder?

Certain regions can have an average IQ higher or lower than 100, but globally, 100 must be the average. IQ is a measure of how intelligent you are relative to everyone else. If you have an IQ of 70, it means you are two standard deviations lower than the global average.

The point of schools is to teach you to think. They are also required to test you on what they've taught you, so that employers can be confident that you aren't a fricking moron. If you can't even do basic analysis and have to rely on a tool, then you won't be able to do more complex analysis that is beyond the capabilities of that tool. Moreover, you will be unable to tell when the tool is wrong.

If the point was just to get a fricking essay out, then there's not much of a problem with using ChatGPT. But that's not the point. Schools do not give one frick about the end product there. Your essay is useless to them. It's a fricking exercise. What they care about is that you understand the process that goes along with it.

      >The point of schools is to teach you to think.

Not only is that false, it's the exact opposite of what schools are implicitly there for. Ever disagreed with a teacher on anything?

  6. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

I kind of get it. While their justification is pretty shit, school is less about learning the specifics and more about learning how to think in several different dimensions, and learning what kind of thinking you align more with so that you can more easily decide on a career later on.
That said, the issue is not ChatGPT, it's the way the education system in general is set up.
If you get people engaged and thinking they'll have no need for an AI assistant.
Frick, schools should be teaching people how to use these AI assistants for their benefit even.
Just like using search engines is a very real and useful skill nowadays, knowing how to use things like ChatGPT will also be a competitive differential in the near very future.

    >You're not using your head!
    >The goal of life is to take advantage of tools to make tasks easier. If we use calculators in everyday life and work, why can't we use ChatGPT for writing? What's the point in making it harder?

You're missing the next layer of absurdity. Students don't need to use their head because we are outgrowing the need for students at all. Why would the average human need to know how to write a paper when anyone can ask chatGPT for anything, instead of reading what an average human has to write about it? The first option is free and there's not thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of education involved. Unless you are truely brilliant, thinking for the sake of dessiminating information to others is an obsolete exercise.

With the way chatbot technology is going you won't need to. Play video games against AI. Chat with AI about various topics. You won't need to be around another human for social needs ever again!

        >Okay, so what's the point of thinking then?
Conducting conversations with other humans IRL, business, dating, dinners, etc. Eventually AI will be in your ear to help guide you. Then you will be judged more on performative execution of the AI's thoughts, and the caliber of the AI you are using according to monthly plan cost. In such a world, it will be the poor who are the most naturally eloquent.

the logical conclusion is that there is no reason to experience anything, because the computer can experience it better

schools are at fault for giving out boilerplate bullshit assignments than can be done by a complex if-else machine. If you want your students to learn, then a) do oral examination (or at worst written but in-person) and b) be allowed to fail students and make them repeat a year.
Neither of these will ever happen so schools will just b***h and moan and kids who know how to prompt the chat will get better grades on their bullshit homework

for a very long time you will need humans verifying/modifying/fixing/testing the outputted code from AI systems. even if it was really good and wrote an entire feature by itself, you would have to vet it and adjust it and integrate it. we don't yet have AI to do all of that shit yet, and when we do it will be a lot of hype while still being shit for a long time.

I hear people complain about issues like AI and calculators from both sides of the debate, but I don't really see anyone asking if schools are necessary in the first place. Ask any teacher if it's important to have a solid understanding of their subject and they will all explain how it's absolutely required for a successful and fulfilling life, but at the same time, the average high school teacher couldn't test out of a senior-level class in any subject but their own.

The answer is that none of the subjects are necessary, and people will seek out the knowledge they need when they find that they need it. The only reason anyone still claims that school is necessary is because they had to suffer through it themselves, and it would be unfair if the younger generation had things any easier.
