"I have nothing to hide" when it comes to privacy is the same as "I have nothing to say" when it come to freedom of speech.

That's a terrible comparison because most people legitimately don't have anything to say, whereas they do (should) have things they want private.
I agree with the underlying spirit of your post just not the way you went about it.

But Discord doesn't require a cell phone number, just an email address.

5 years ago it didn't. Make an account now, and it will block your account until you hand over your number.

I have an account now. And it doesn't have a phone number associated with it.

            Anonymous

If you made one years ago, then ya you're fine. I decided to make a new one after i lost my other account and it's the same cell phone required shit. I guess you got lucky.

              Anonymous

It's very random. I had an old account that I haven't used in a year or so. When I tried to login it asked for a phone. Tried a couple of times (different browsers, ips, spaced by a few days) but after a while I gave up and abandoned it. Months later I remember about it, try again and magic, I'm in no questions asked.

Then I wanted to change the email associated to it. But I couldn't without checking a confirmation mail on the old address first. Since I used a throwaway no chance (even with a genuine address if you took it down at some point you're fricked).

Well, new account then, this time with a legit email. This a few months ago. No phone required, no probs. I just make sure to have some contact in the comms I'm in have my email address (or me have theirs) in case I get locked out by some jannie/they decide phones are now mandatory.

not OP but the people seem to forget just how big the internet is. Every home machine has the potential to be a server of some kind.
There's no solution, because there's not really a problem. Humans use human places. The method to success is not to increase validation requirements, but to limit your access/use based on the reputation of the site. Security through obscurity, and real human to real human trust.
There will be AI to detect AI, and there will be AI to defeat AI that detect AI, and around and around it goes.
Same logic as why iToddlers on Macs "don't get viruses" - it's not because their security is any better, it's because so few malware authors bother to write malware for them. Because their market share is relatively negligible.

How do you morons think that will even work.
It can't be cookies or anything or that will be hacked. It will have to be government side accounts. Like the DMV, or like covid passes.
If it's somehow tied to your IP, that will be hacked and bots will post as you.
If it's a log in to your gov account, that will be hacked. Passwords? Hacked.
Even if they 100% make it fail proof, which won't happen, there will be lackies on the inside most likely who will make fake accounts to sell like they did the cov passes. It's a non starter.

I've forseen another threat, not by AI, or tech illiterate legislators and I'll be blunt about the source of the problem-Chinese, Koreans, and Singaporeans. I've been wandering around different modding communities for a while, some art related, others for translators, and some for reverse engineering. There are more and more shysters doing this:

Someone releases a resource, mod, or sourcecode, along comes a content theif who collects all this stuff and then reports the original creator/uploader for copyright infringement, so their files get taken down, usually without any warning on part of the host because they always assume the worst and don't want lawyers to serve them papers. This is destroying many communities because creators get fed up and don't want scammers making money off content/tools/code that was released for free.
