I feel like it's very binary. Humans will either be extinct/forever enslaved, or essentially in paradise with none of the problems we face today. Who really knows. I guess there's also the outside chance that AI is over hyped and "nothing" happens, or AI just treats us like insignificant pets/ants, but I would bet that it's one of the binary options.
The internet didn't do a lot either when it was made public, but years of development fixed that. Personal computers were almost useless to the general person as well until better software mas made. Electricity had the same issues without products and structure to deliver it to your house. The car was mocked by the horse riders back then without proper roads and gas stations. Each time is the same thing. You can be the guy that laughs and says "this will never work or you can have a more open perspective of things. Currently AI is useless for the average joe but it does have potential and something I am seeing is it's advancing faster than every single example I named before.
However it is still too soon to say whether the changes that are about to happen because of it will be all net positive or negative. I'm inclined to think there is going to be a lot of progress in many areas that will never look back at the time they did things without it.
There is going to be people and things that wont adapt and will fight change, as it always happens. Even if they are right they'll suffer from productivity and wont be able to compete.
Sometimes a product doesn't need to be better than the one that its replacing, just cheaper, faster or easier to make.
Netflix or Spotify are not better than physical formats. A phone has a shitty camera, bad performance compared to a computer, a shitty microphone and god knows the touch keyboard can be rage inducing some times yet it sells and replaces many things people are not buying anymore.
People are willing to compromise quality in a world where we are all getting poorer and more mediocre with each generation. I don't see a trend where AI fails because it does a lousy job when your own country is replacing are replacing capable people with indians and mexicans because they are cheaper to hire while knowing the kind of skills they provide.
The best possible outcome for AI is for it to become so wildly advanced that everybody becomes convinced they created God in a lab.
