What IS AI? Like, deep down is chatGPT the same as an AI that can beat Mario?
Seriously what the fuck IS it? A clever bundle of statistics??

They just hire a billion pajeets to talk with you and draw pictures for you. Don't know how you haven't figured it out yet.
It's just a bunch of shifting hyperlines in the 150billionth dimensions
>What IS AI?
a miserable pile of if statements
>>What IS AI?
>a miserable pile of if statements
Automatically generated if statements*
Neural networks are Turing complete. It is far more powerful than "a pile of if statements". Anyone who knows more code than the first two weeks of comp sci should know that.
"piles of if statements" can also be turing complete
No they cannot you need memory and loops for that
Just need enough ifs to encode state(if buffer bit one would be true, etc). Under information theory literally any process can be encoded as (many) if statements. Neural networks can be re-encoded as massive trees(though it quickly becomes computationally intractable for even very simple networks). So it's not particularly meaningful either way.
Artificial intelligence, which can mean anything really.
What most people think of when they hear "AI" should actually be called "AC", or "artificial consciousness"
A bunch of matrices glued together
ChatGPT is just a text prediction service that learns from patterns in other text.

No. Just plain simple linear Algebra. There is no magic at all. And probably a good amount of straight forward statistics
predicts the next token
it turns out this can do some pretty impressive shit.
the trick to understanding it is to realize that language is not as complex as we thought it was.
there is a growing literature of people doing what amounts to astrology on these LLMs because they can't accept this.
As humans yes we are intelligent in our totality, but language in isolation can be done using dumb methods.
In hindsight this is kind of obvious. Language must be easy, otherwise how could we possibly have evolved language and transmitted it through generations all these millennia.
Language is easy "by design".
its a great way to kill the internet though
poor internet. we barely knew thee
it was good before the thirdies got here
I understand what you're saying, but I'm unsure where to find more information describing the "easy by design" nature of language. Has anyone been able to figure out why this is case or is it just obvious that an LLM could not succeed otherwise?
I would refer you to Stephen Wolfram's blogpost titled "What Is ChatGPT Doing … and Why Does It Work?"
