You know whats funny? Its easy to discern if a pic is AI generated while you hardly cant tell if a sentence is made by a bot

It's pretty easy to tell if an essay is written by a bot, actually. The lack of a coherent point/opinion is pretty glaring. It just takes time to read whereas images can be taken in at a glance.

The bar for a sentence is far lower than the bar for a picture.

If essays were all laser focused on the central issue at hand they'd be two paragraphs long tops. Go read Kirkegaard's Fear and Trembling if you want to see someone dance around a point for 100 pages.

Make them defend their thesis. If they didn't write it, they're not going to handle any scrutiny.

OP, have them present and defend their theses in person. If they can't explain their own paper, it's a dead giveaway. Also, check for consistency in writing style. AI-generated stuff can be unnaturally polished or sometimes overly verbose. Good luck!

Detecting whether something is written by AI can be challenging, but a few clues to look for include unusually consistent formatting, lack of emotional depth or personal experiences, and the absence of common human errors in grammar and punctuation. Additionally, if the content seems too coherent or excessively verbose, it might be indicative of AI-generated text.

This is so fricking stupid. My university started flagging proofread papers as AI-assisted because it didn't have any grammar and punctuation errors. No shit it's not going to have those: I'm being graded on my writing!

Good chance they're already struggling mark-wise so just ask if they want bonus marks, send them a random paragraph from their own work and ask them if they know the author.
If they reply with anything other than "me" then ask them to come in, give them a shaking down and see which ones crack. Don't imply it's just AI but also list it alongside plagarism.

If it's still a good paper, I don't see the problem. If it's bad or rambling without saying anything, then grade it low based on that. They'll either have to write it themselves in the future, or become better at generating papers with AI.

      Stop caring
There were already ways to cheat by having other people write it or copying it and changing the words
Hell, where I live there are even paid services to write your papers
If a student wants to hurt himself by cheating, you can't stop him
Just make it clear its absolutely forbidden to use aAI

Easiest thing to do was rewrite the wikipedia article and use wikipedia sources as your own
But I only did it once
I actually enjoyed writing papers the proper way

Just let them, then have them defend the whole thing in front of a small audience, like the entire class or some kind of tribunal or whatever the frick
They'll be forced to actually double check and read the whole thing they shit out, also understand it to a tee, if they managed to do that, then what's the issue?

I remember when my wienerend of a brother in law claimed I'd used copypasta during an argument about Brexit on a family Facebook page. The cheeky fricker claimed I'd copied my post that it was a massive mistake for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union, from a website, as if I couldn't come to the conclusion myself and I had to copy someone else's musings to win an argument. I almost drove the 60 miles to my sister's house to slap the daft c**t.

unless you are teaching middle school children then let them.
They're old enough to take charge of their own futures, if they wanna cheat then let them.

If they're actually middle schoolers then they shouldn't be smart enough to use it anyway. On the off chance they do figure it out, a firewall rule should prevent them from doing it anymore
