yeah but Copilot is legit, its image generation capabilities could breath some life back into image boards, the meme potential is through the roof. Sure there's better alternatives but Copilot is doing what the iPhone did, bringing AI acceleration to the normie, for better and worse.

cloud LLMs would not even be close to sustainable financially without some subscription model. High chance this is a local model approach.

        Anonymous

The local LLM would be "hackable". Like you could replace it with any other model in the pirate way. That would mean a better focus on open source models and maybe open source would catch up a bit more. AI based OS is a stupid idea but if it really happens then we can turn this around

It makes perfect sense. Offices and schools and anywhere else that operates a large amount of computers aren't going to have someone go out and buy new RAM sticks to upgrade all their computers, they're just going to order a lot of new computers that have everything they need already on them. Millions of perfectly usable computers will be thrown away, to the landfill or to the hands of scavengers, and millions of computers will be bought, making an obscene amount of money for people who manufacture computers, and people who sell the OS that those computers come pre-installed with. A grubby Indian man will eventually make a handful of rupees after smashing a laptop from 2021 into pieces with a hammer to extract some valuable metal scraps.

As an IT guy I have actually been assigned to go additional RAM in computer labs before. It happens more than you'd think if a dean gets all excited about a new program or feature.

      >shouldn't 8GB RAM be fine?
It would be if programs weren't becoming systems inside systems just to run a system that will plug into another system of systems. Now that everything is virtualized and containered for system security and data leak prevention, the RAM requirements have been increasing at a stupid rate.

So do they seriously intend to run some local LLM on a measly 16 GB or ram shared with other system resources? So realistically we have a model that is at most 10gb or so and processed by the cpu or igpu. Well this is going to be an entertaining train wreck to watch.

16gb of ram is dirt cheap unless you live in some shithole country. 2x32gb of decent hynix whatever 6000mhz ddr5 ram costs like 110 dollars right now, that ram is so good that your mobo/memory controller are more than likely going to be the bottleneck in terms of how far you can oc it

If you are running a low powered laptop you shouldn't be running windows anyway, even still you can find 2x8gb ddr3 sodimm sticks for a pittance

Every other day there's another fine ACPI mess caused by Linux - which, of course, they blame on OEMs instead of fixing. Since laptops live and die on their power management, this is a showstopper.
And seriously, did you think that crowing that Atheros wi-fi worked was some sort of flex? That's the tech equivalent of running to your mommy that "i did poo in toilet".

I'm honestly amazed that even after 10 years RAM usage hasn't ballooned. I mean 16 does pretty much everything you want in Windows 10, including games. That said I kinda want to run 192gb and make a colossal 128gb RAMDRive just for the sake of it.
Also lol AI "assistant". I wonder how much more data this funnels to microshit? Oh, I can already assume the answer is "far more than it needs to".
