>just found out that bushido wasn't real and that samurai were closer to street thugs than noble warriors
They'd buy new swords and test them on random innocents. They were literally just gangsters who were hired as bodyguards. They started being romanticized fairly recently by a Japanese westaboo who wanted to appeal to the British by saying the samurai were Japanese knights with their own code of chivalry.

So much of what we think we know about history is just made up romanticized bullshit.

Knights were also street thugs that would buy new swords to kill peasants for ale money. Very few actually held themselves to the knights' code. We forget that rule of law is a very new concept in the grand scheme of things and might makes right was how the world worked for most of human history.

Similarily in the West, priest would have to break out relics and bones of saints to shame knights into taming their violent urges and abstaining from brutalizing the peasantry.

Being able to afford a mount and the weapons to fight a cheval made you a knight in the 10th century as well as their descendants afterward similarly to the equites of Rome.

a knight was a landed member of the nobility, you're thinking of men-at-arms/retainers

contrary to popular belief there wasn't one code of chivalry, it was just a general idea of "don't be a dick" amongst the NOBILITY

also, this horrible histories skit summarizes what knights actually did perfectly

While you are correct it was more don't be an embarrassment to the court, and don't frick with members of the church or their property. The concept of chivalry is from the late medieval period in response to them being dicks. The church and the court got tired of minor nobles fricking with their shit when lords had petty squabbles with each other.

the average samurai was closer to a man-at-arms than a highborn knight they just get conflated because people are dumb, highborn japanese had their own code of conduct they were expected to fulfil like europeans too

What I find funny is the fact that European and Asian histories are so romanticized and inaccurate and we just accept that for what it is, but when it comes to African history, people feel the need to be as accurate and factual as possible. Like if someone said that the Songhai warriors under Emperor Sunni Ali had a code called sharaf that they all obeyed, then people would immediately begin going out of their way to debunk it. Even when it comes to things that are real, people go out of their way to debunk it. It broke a lot of hearts when it became undeniable that Great Zimbabwe was built not by Arabs or a lost tribe of ancient Europeans, but *gasp* local southern African people.

        See what I mean lol

If an ancient structure like that were found in the middle of Laos or Germany (even though Germans were primitive and incapable of building things that large), no one would even question the notion of it being built by locals. But since it's in Africa, we can't just accept the simplest (and proven) explanation that Africans knew how to lay one rock on the other and build some walls.

To be fair, shit like the mosque of djenne falling into ruins and noone doing anything about it again for centuries (even when they werent subdued by other people) gave rise to the idea that africans just dont care

            Anonymous

That's one thing I can agree with you on anon. There was so much cool shit about pre-colonial Africa that the locals just allowed to deteriorate. The Great Wall of Benin, once the largest earthen structure on earth, now is just a moat full of garbage. The Ochun River, which was once believed to be the physical manifestation of a fertility goddess, is now a dumping ground for the Nigerian government and is full of toxic sludge. Blacks from the Americas make religious pilgrimages to the river to worship the goddess and are shocked when they come to find what the Nigerians have done to it.

Yeah the Europeans destroyed some of the ancient culture in Africa, but Africans allowed most of it to fall apart, especially the Africans who christianized and saw their old culture as blasphemous.

Djenne really baffles me tbh, I dont think the population ever changed in all those centuries and remained muslim. You have stories of mansa musa building all these mosques himself as well as the arabs and theres barely anything left. It honestly surprises me that there were still records about who built it all originally back then.

I feel like colonization is a really depressing thing, especially among cultures that were as advanced and great as the Muslim empires of west Africa. The Mali, Songhai, Ghana, Kanem Empires etc used to be the conquerors. They used to go into North Africa and take slaves and concubines and forcefully convert pagans to Islam if the Arabs hadn't reached them first. Then to get conquered by an outside force. It must've been a serious blow to the self esteem of the people. They probably just couldn't be fricked to preserve shit.

I used to think that was just some goofy origin story, like how Mexican gang members in South California insist that they're the descendants of Aztec warrior secret societies, but now knowing that samurai were just hired thugs, the idea doesn't seem far fetched.

The worst part is that homosexual japan historians refuse to acknowledge the yakuza come from the gaygiest of the gaygiest samurais who refused to kill themselves when failing and became ronin, aka literal bums and hobbos. Frick samurai "legends".

wrong moron, the yakuza are burakumin aka japanese untouchables or gypsies. it's kind of like how israelites got into organized crime in eastern europe and the US; it's always the clannish outgroups who are the best power base for that kind of thing.

the true fate of samurai in the modern age is what
