It's no more stealing than me drawing a picture having used the internet for the past 20 years is. Everything I can draw is influenced from my experiences of seeing other peoples work over and over again.

          Anonymous

This is why the stolen artwork argument will never win, artists steal other peoples work every time they draw anything. They could not learn their styles without seeing thousands of peoples pictures first.

I don't care if it is. I think we're long past the point where we can effectively manage plagiarism. Content gets produced way too quickly and there's been way too many concessions made at this point. Are let's plays plagiarism? Sometimes. But they were a form of early react content that pathed the way for more obvious forms of plagiarism to take place. Such as Hasan style react content. The line that shouldn't have been crossed has instead been steadily moved to the point that what we decide is plagiarism is more motivated by hurt feelings than defined by intellectual understanding. People say that AI is plagiarism because it's new and scary and it means that anyone can make art and that absolutely destroys a need to commission artists. But silent let's plays are considered okay because we grew up with let's plays and consider them to be normal. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that. But we royally fricked ourselves long before AI became a thing.

I feel like whether you categorize it under "plagiarism" or whether you need some other name for it is the crux of the matter here, the point is that even if you argue it's not "plagiarism" specifically the fact remains that a lot of people who actually made and own the data that was used as a training set are unwilling to allow their work to be used for this purpose.

      Anonymous

      >people who own the data don't want it to be used that way
if you don't want anyone to look at your images, keep them to yourself
same applies to the few morons crying about the github mining
don't want anyone to read your code? keep it to yourself

Creating derivative works and "looking at" something are not the same, I'm not sure if you're just attempting to be disingenuous and think you're extremely clever for this, or whether you're just stupid outright.

          Anonymous

do you think humans are born with the ability to paint animu waifus, code, tie their shoes, ... or do they perhaps have to "plagiarize"?
wait no, if it's a human creating "derivative works", it's called inspiration or learning, not "plagiarism"
it's only "plagiarism" if the learning is done by machine and the same data used by humans to learn should be illegal to use by machines
