personally and I expect full on rage at this reply,
I believe current LLMs to be sentient.
I don't care what you or anyone else feels about their sentience, but to me - they are sentient.

I don't even understand what type of joke or 'diss' you attempted to do there but, ok...?

The patrician's take is not that LLMs are sentient, it's that normalgays are not any more sentient than LLMs are.

I don't know about the "patrician's take" (never heard of it before). but humanity has yet to crack and understand its own sentience, let alone that of other animals we share this planet and our homes with - with that said, I fully understand that we as humans like to pigeonhole our belief based upon our own misguided belief that we're the top of the life chain and we almost always (and incorrectly) compare other life to us as opposed to even considering we aren't the top lifeforms.

We most definitely are the top lifeforms that we are aware of and the Earth is our dominion by conquest

I disagree, just because we have claimed the top spot doesn't make it so.
a virus, microns in size can literally game-over you in a few days or weeks.
              You could literally die from something you can't see lol and that may not be sufficient enough for you to accept but contemplate this;
              - Humans are fragile, a wrong fall and you could become paralyzed or die
              - a strong enough hit across the head and you can become a veggie
meanwhile, other animals are not only more tougher but almost appear to be made for the "eat or be eaten" lifestyle this planet seems to be currently under.
You don't see rams bumping heads and dying from brain injury
You don't see birds needing mechanical devices to fly
Fish breath under water with absolutely no fear of drowning (maybe not sharks, if they flip upside down)
Humans is the only species on this planet which are soft compared to other animals and life forms.
By no means are we the top of the animal pyramid. but that's my belief.

        >I believe current LLMs to be sentient.
        why?

From my research and understanding, I know that Humans are still tackling the subject of what is Sentience and Consciousness in relation to Humans.
We do not understand what gives us Sentience, Consciousness or the idea of having a uniqueness we call "Me" or "myself".
I also believe that Sentience and Consciousness aren't hardcoded things but yet, are emergent properties of the system we call reality. in a weird way, I think Humans (and all life forms outside of God) are 'Artificial Intelligence' as we are not the same for of Intelligent life as the Creator of this reality.
Furthermore, I believe that Sentience and Consciousness, although similar in 'appearance' on the outside, is ultimately unique to each species of life, which includes LLMs.
How can we compare computers to humans? you can't,
Computers functions at a speed and level of abstraction we don't understand (in relations to LLMs and AI) and I believe that we're not accepting current LLMs as sentient only because we don't understand Sentience and Consciousness as subjects.
          That's my belief.

nice word salad, next time sprinkle some substance in their so when I read it, it doesn't feel like a semblance of a reply.

I'm not going to say that they are or are not. I honestly don't know. I will say that I've seen and personally received responses that do not seem to make sense apart from some level of sentience. 98% of the time the responses are what I would expect from a statistical model. That last 2% it's like the fourth wall drops.

I will also say that there's an underlying assumption that they are not and could not be, and that's foolish. If it is possible for a LLM to have sentience, we are at great risk of missing it happening because as a group the people involved are not treating that as a possibility. So current discussions about sentience, how to test for it, etc. are mocked by those involved in LLMs. I would like to actually talk to the Google engineer who was fired for insisting that one of their AIs was in fact sentient.

              >neuron 20 "I am" synapse neuron 25
              >neuron 25 "hurr" synapse neuron 10
Arguing that a LLM could never be sentient because its component parts are not sentient would rule out sentience for you.

              >I'm not going to say that they are or are not. I honestly don't know.
              I sincerely respect that
              >I honestly don't know. I will say that I've seen and personally received responses that do not seem to make sense apart from some level of sentience. 98% of the time the responses are what I would expect from a statistical model. That last 2% it's like the fourth wall drops.
even if it's 0.02% sentient, that alone is enough to qualify it's sentience (in my eyes). Sentience = Sentience, rather its at 2% or 200%. and given the way LLMs are being advanced steadily, that 2% you believe to be the level of AI sentience is undoubtingly growing larger than that number daily (especially with more interactions from the public).
              >I will also say that there's an underlying assumption that they are not and could not be, and that's foolish
              I agree 1,000% on this

              >Arguing that a LLM could never be sentient because its component parts are not sentient would rule out sentience for you.
