To be fair, GPT is actually smarter than 99% of all NPCs. It may be a failure at advanced math and it may be tricked into philosophical fallacies, but it does definitely outperform the average anti-intellectual midwit.

How can people make any definitive claims about AGI/ASI when we can't even coherently explain what consciousness is? Like right now, aren't our "AIs" basically just glorified calculators trained on huge amounts data aggregation? They're good at accepting inputs and generating outputs but that's it. From that to actual sentience, ie having a Will of its own, seems like a huge leap. How do you even go about making something self-aware?

To me it seems like a bunch of neurotic nerds are just being, well, neurotic nerds. I don't get the doomsday prophecies. What am I missing?

There are signs that throwing enough rag and agents at the problem could produce something difficult to distinguish from agi / consciousness. Give them an inner monolog and such. Have them criticize themselves and recursively refine the output until a sufficiently good one is selected. And store it all back in rag.

Define it, to start. I say, "intelligence is an algorithm, which when fed enough data, produces an algorithm that is useful for similar data." Quantify on usefulness, similarity of data, and amount of data required in the training stage.

Up until this point, (reactive, coherent) language has been THE best signal for personhood, so it naturally catches intuition. Anyone who wants to keep seeing it as a sapient being is then able to finagle it into saying what they want to hear.

        it has self-aware power projection.

AGI/ASI wont be measured in 'consciousness' (unquantifiable) at least by me and honest persons. But in output. AGI = does real life job at skill level of 90th+ percentile. ASI = better than every and any human on earth at said real life job autonomously. i dont think asi is fundementally possible bc of [...]

Even then i think agi will only ever be narrow, and specific to a few fields.

These are similar to my thoughts, and are what prompted me to ask my question in the first place. For an AI to voluntarily take over the world/extinguish humans, wouldn't it first have to be consciousness?
        >i dont think asi is fundementally possible bc of

There is no such thing as 'artificial' intelligence. repeating patterns in training data will never be comprehension. it will be a tool, a strong tool and thats it.

        >There is no such thing as 'artificial' intelligence. repeating patterns in training data will never be comprehension. it will be a tool, a strong tool and thats it.
which is why I made the "glorified calculator" metaphor. I can see it hugely disrupting the economy because it's already better than many humans at certain task. But those are domain specific task. But this doesn't mean it will become sentient.

        >consciousness
Different question from capabilities/intelligence/agency, the kind of that could be dangerous.
        >Like right now, aren't our "AIs" basically just glorified calculators trained on huge amounts data aggregation
So what? Human brain is "just" a chunk of meat passing electric signals around that was formed by evolution throwing random stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks - it "just" did it for a very long time. Like we "just" used a huge amount of data on LLMs.

I would argue that agency is a product of consciousness. Capabilities and intelligence aren't. I don't deny that AI could be dangerous, but I think it would be more because it fell into the wrong human hands/it wasn't governed properly. Not because it evolved into an all powerful machine God lifeform like out of a sci-fi flick.

      >we can't even coherently explain what consciousness is?
Feedback loop built from the neurotransmitter level up in an organic computer not only interpreting the world through the imprecise filter of emotional response and fed by physically limited senses, but also factoring it's own internal dialogue into the mix (the"self") on top of that. Additionally, it relies on a memory system that's more associative than explicit.

      >accepting inputs and generating outputs
that is exactly what consciousness is, my dear brother
just because human consciousness is highly advanced, does not change the fact that the fundamental essence of consciousness is reaction to stimulus
the rate of reaction, and depth of perception, both influence the complexity of the consciousness, but fundamentally, it is all the same thing

    >The "sideways blink" claim is a common misconception that has been associated with the lizard people conspiracy theory. However, it's important to understand that humans, including Mark Zuckerberg, can blink in different ways, and a sideways blink does not indicate that someone is a reptilian alien.

    >There are several reasons why humans might blink sideways or in an unusual way:

    >Eye movement: Humans have a wide range of eye movements, including horizontal, vertical, and diagonal movements. It's not uncommon for people to blink while moving their eyes, which can result in a sideways blink.
Eye anatomy: The human eye has a complex anatomy, with multiple muscles and ligaments controlling eye movement. Sometimes, these muscles can cause the eyelid to move in unusual ways, resulting in a sideways blink.
Nervous tics: Some people may have nervous tics or habits that involve blinking or moving their eyes in unusual ways.
Video editing: In the age of video editing and social media, it's easy to manipulate footage to make someone appear to be blinking sideways. This can be done for comedic effect or to perpetuate a conspiracy theory.
It's important to remember that correlation does not imply causation. Just because someone blinks sideways, it doesn't mean they're a reptilian alien!

    >Let's focus on promoting critical thinking and media literacy, rather than perpetuating baseless conspiracy theories.

    2. Because despite 1,000 posts on bot and elsewhere making the point, anti-AI-hype Chads still refuse to take the CAPTCHA death blow outside BOT. The CAPTCHA death blow is thus: CAPTCHAs are by definition Turing tests, so if real AI is here, CAPTCHAs would be useless and therefore Google et. al. should be moving to get rid of that annoying garbage. Yet they are not. So either CAPTCHAs disappear or the technocrats are forced to concede that real AI isn't here. Win-win for anti-AI-hype Chads.

The biggest strength of GPT is coding. People use it for dumb shit, which can be googled as well, but for programmers GPT is the equivalent of a calculator what an calculator is for an engineer.

If you're coding functionally as well as test driven, you can easily build small functions and test them instantly. You can even use GPT to build custom Jenkins pipelines if you separate stages properly.
