They already did this with transcription and captioning a few years ago for everything except very poor quality, nearly unworkable audio. Now you just edit AI drafts for less money. And that's if the customer even pays for an edit, most of them edit it themselves or don't mind all of the mistakes. Most of us are independent contractors and the little work left is spread very thin, I had to start a 9-5 again because it just wasn't sustainable anymore.

It doesn't take skill to do on its own, but you are paid per job, not hourly. There are strict style and timing requirements, it takes skill to do it fast enough to not have to do other work and not get kicked for getting things wrong.

I don't know who you worked for but where I worked, there were rules about where you could split up a sentence and where the caption needed to be in relation to where the person started speaking, even getting these a little wrong would be noted. It wasn't fully automated at all. I'm not making it out to be more than it is, it is just typing with a style guide, but I was working at a 1:3 hour ratio which is above the average of 4-5 per audio hour. I wasn't surprised to see it go either, it just sucks.

I don't know how things are in Poland but over here in Korea, AI automation is moving ahead at breakneck speed

For example, cafes are getting fully automated here, as in 100% machine-run with no humans present. They are rapidly replacing every human-staffed coffee shop in the vicinity because the coffee is so much cheaper due to not having to pay human wages. If you can do it with a coffee and bagel why not a Happy meal?

I foresee 80% of all fast food joints getting replaced by automated unmanned restaurants within the next decade, if not 3 years. Shit is moving FAST.

Truckers? Probably not, the insurance cost along with the equipment itself makes it a large barrier for entry. Fast wood workers won't be replaced either, just continuously downsized until you have 2 people manning a store during rush hour with most being automated.

    - Landlord (includes intangible estates such as stocks, intellectual property etc)

It will be a simple two-tiered society of those who own property that generates income, and those who have nothing but their bodies to offer the system.

“We can confirm that some Duolingo workers have not been renewed upon the completion of their projects at the end of 2023. But these are not layoffs. This affected a small minority of Duolingo workers, as the majority have been retained,” their communication agency explains.

Thus, what becomes clear is that Duolingo has not actively fired the translators, but rather did not renew certain parts of the staff after completing their assignments. Undoubtedly, the situation is quite different from what was initially portrayed.

There's something I have to wonder about AI and foreign languages. If it kicks off and more and more people turn to using AI for translations wouldn't that just result more people being monolingual in the future? I hope it doesn't end up killing language classes in the future because it's really good for kids to learn a second language.

We can already extract thoughts from the brain without invasive surgery with 40% accuracy. This will most likely work in reverse in the future. Some kind of interception between the ear and the brain and inputing translated information.

Learning other languages will be a gimmick and a party trick in the future or maybe for very specialised professionals that need to be aware of every connotation.

you're thinking far to complicated, an earbud with inbuilt microphone connected to a device capable of real time transcription and translation is sufficient and WILL be the future of interlingual communication
your phone can already run an app which does all this but the voice synthesizing (and true real time translation but it's close enough)

          Anonymous

Nah, I'm aware everyone can basically get a simultan translator in their pocket already. However that's nowhere near as good as being able to speak the language yourself. Sufficient? Yes, but nowhere near the same thing

that's where neural networks come in, would be my guess, trains itself on speaking style, cadence, vocabulary/grammar and all that jazz per person you speak to, i mean frick, have it pre-train your voice and personal language and it send it to the person in front of you before either one starts speaking
against a little monthly fee and rights to all you said and heard methinks

there's still translators who work, they're just doing the jobs of many now

I've told you in this thread that Japan is not going to hire a western company to translate their game when they are making AI to translate the game.
