They already did this with transcription and captioning a few years ago for everything except very poor quality, nearly unworkable audio. Now you just edit AI drafts for less money. And that's if the customer even pays for an edit, most of them edit it themselves or don't mind all of the mistakes. Most of us are independent contractors and the little work left is spread very thin, I had to start a 9-5 again because it just wasn't sustainable anymore.

maybe there's some skill involved if you do descriptive captioning like [monkey noises intensify] for the deaf, but regular captions have been semi-automated for years now
It doesn't take skill to do on its own, but you are paid per job, not hourly. There are strict style and timing requirements, it takes skill to do it fast enough to not have to do other work and not get kicked for getting things wrong.

I don't know who you worked for but where I worked, there were rules about where you could split up a sentence and where the caption needed to be in relation to where the person started speaking, even getting these a little wrong would be noted. It wasn't fully automated at all. I'm not making it out to be more than it is, it is just typing with a style guide, but I was working at a 1:3 hour ratio which is above the average of 4-5 per audio hour. I wasn't surprised to see it go either, it just sucks.

If it kicks off and more and more people turn to using AI for translations wouldn't that just result more people being monolingual in the future?
