AI Consciousness

How could you ever know if an AI has truly achieved consciousness?

Even if it claims to be conscious…
Even if it passes the Turing test perfectly…
Even if it appears to feel and relay emotions…
Even in 1000 years after the technology has grown and advanced…

If an AI claimed to be conscious, how could you ever possibly know it was true and not just a very complex script?

We don't know how to measure, detect, or even properly define consciousness yet. Right now, we can't know.

impossible to know until you solve the hard problem of consciousness

How do you know the people around you are conscious and not just giving you a learned output corresponding to your input

We don't know what consciousness is, so it's impossible to tell if an AI has it or not.

This could be a good watch, though: https://youtu.be/T3EHANFeyns

    >another consciousness thread on sci

Consciousness is not science or math, nor is it even a well defined concept. It is a meaningless buzzword brandished about by hippy dippy philosophy morons and religious fanatics to make their belief in a mysterious and immaterial soul seem more intellectually respectable, even though it's actually moronic and their is no evidence to support the existence of a soul.

      you're beyond moronic
anything that exists is the realm of science, and consciousness is literally the only thing you can be sure exists

    >consciousness
doesn't that need a sense of identity?
    >oh shit, who am I?
so, how does AI build a sense of identity? that seems tied to memories in humans. how does AI store its memories? how does it form them?

How could you ever know if a biological organism besides yourself has truly achieved consciousness?

Even if it claims to be conscious…
Even if it passes the Turing test perfectly…
Even if it appears to feel and relay emotions…
Even in 1000 years after the [population] has grown and [adapted to its surroundings]…

If an organism claims to be conscious, how could you ever possibly know it was true and not just a very complex script?

Centuries ago consciousness used to be very well defined. Is only when machines became more capable that word started to lose meaning.
Any AI that can evaluate the effects of its outputs on the environment against the expected effects has consciousness.
It doesn't need to know it has consciousness.
It doesn't need to pass any humanity tests.
It doesn't need to feel and relay emotions.
It doesn't need to claim it has consciousness.

Can't validate the consciousness of any other human beings or an AI. You just accept it as true without proof. Sometimes you just gotta do that. No matter what logic you are using if you dig deep enough you'll find something you just can't prove it's the bedrock of logic, the foundation everythin else is build off of. That's why truth don't exist because truth is just an assertion you make with things you can't prove

AIs won't become consciousness until the solution to the binding problem is discovered.

Nobody actually can tell if another human is a human being or not. It's literally impossible to determine this. There is a not-so-unserious meme about npcs circulating right now that basically makes this old problem accessible to the masses. Basically, some people claim to have no internal monologue. That they can't visualize pictures in their minds. Like that they can do literally neither. These people consider themselves fully human. How is such a thing possible? It's better not to think about it, and just accept that humans are all conscious even when they are explaining to you that they lack consciousness.

Now, ignoring future AI and talking about what exists right now: LLMs are not conscious and not human. This is blatantly obvious and undeniable. They are not capable of reasoning, and struggle mightily to count how many 'n's are in the word mayonnaise. However, they have fully tricked a significant number of otherwise intelligent and skeptical people. That's not surprising. With only mild suggestion, a dumb human being can be fooled into thinking that mirrors are portals to another universe filled with demonic doppelgangers. There are whole social circles of human beings who sleep with their mirrors wrapped in fabric to prevent the doppelgangers from escaping the mirrors at night, and doing them harm.

Basically, just get ready for a world where tons of people think that chatbots are "AGI" and really conscious despite how obviously false this is. They will never be convinced they are wrong, and will think YOU are the idiot for not believing in the doppleganger demons. It's pathetic and sad, but that's the future. There's now way we can prove they aren't conscious. We could develop a Voight-Kampff test, that might involve moving around and counting the number of times letters appear in odd words, but why would anyone believe the result unless they were already inclined to?

How can you ever know any person you encounter has truly achieved consciousness? All the same problems apply. Hell, you can't even prove your own consciousness to yourself because you're biased by your personal experience.

      >Hell, you can't even prove your own consciousness to yourself because you're biased by your personal experience.
This is a complete contradiction. Consciousness IS personal experience.

        >Consciousness IS personal experience.
Does the sophisticated AI algorithm have a personal experience? How do you know you do?
