They walked out to protest pay and conditions.
Basically, the pay and conditions sucked but they had some pride in working in the industry, and then AI comes along and shits all over that pride leaving them with shit pay and conditions.
The problem all along was that the industry wasn't adequately compensating the workers, not that AI is taking jobs.

To support the Hollywood workers who do have the poor pay and conditions.

The star actors don't have poor pay and conditions. But less known actors do. And they want to do shit like put AI clauses into contracts so that studios can use an actor's face and likeness in future roles without paying for it.

So imagine if they had written that into Tom Cruise's contract for Endless Love (where he had a small role) or Samuel L Jackson after one of his early roles in the 70s. Studios would've been using AI to age them up as the actors got bigger and pumped out shit with nothing the actor could do.

The other thing they want to do is keep their streaming numbers private (likely because they are bullshit and they are misleading investors) and saying "just trust us bro", despite them being scummy fricks basically since Hollywood's inception.

There's 160,000 actors represented. Name 0.1% of them, that's just 160. Your list is just A-listers who are alive, right? The 99%+ you couldn't name or recognize are all the one-off bit parts in the show. They fly in, shoot their scenes, and fly out. They get what looks like a fat check for a few days, but that has to cover their rent until the next gig, hopefully already booked.

Think James Hong (that Chinese guy you see in everything but never leading,) but nowhere as prolific or recognizable.

There are far more options "across the western world" than the 2 American paries.

But even if you restrict "across the western world" to mean just the USA (as you seem to do) they still choose the option that makes a bad situation worse.

Actor's specifically care about their total annual income.

It's really hard to line up enough projects that pay at a consistent standard. Income is pretty variable.

I think its why so many actors keep trying to work out side gigs like selling vodka or phones or whatever... its a more consistent pay check.

So I think they pretty much all want to protest to up the average paycheck to compensate for how hard it is to find gigs.

Which is why these protests and arguments will happen over and over and over. Actor's don't work "full time" and production companies cast and hire people on sporadic and variable time frames. So there will never be a true "career path" for actors. They won't have a steady income stream that increases year over year and there's not a promise of "advancing" or getting more work in their field based on the merit of experience. It'll always pretty much be luck of the draw.

When the job market waxes and wanes the industry will get upset and make demands using the "greedy" solution (just pay us more) rather than addressing the root problem. And people will keep writing these stupid articles -_-

Considering these protests coming from different sectors of society, how likely are generative AIs to be banned by law? Or at the very least that politicians pass laws that make training LLMs like GPT chat unfeasible?

It's a matter of time before artists, actors, musicians and others come together and pursue this. It seems to me that they complain about the same thing but they are separated.

I mean, politicians don't even have to explicitly ban these models as long as they pass laws that make training them more difficult and not more profitable or viable for companies. That would be enough for the death of this category of AIs. What do you think?

It'll just lead to monopolies. If you make the copyright side of things brutally difficult to comply with... then companies like Adobe will just train the models on works they own (which they're already doing) and get a monopoly on AI art, for example.
