There is a black metal band called Sentient and these all look like black metal album covers. It seems when you put the word sentient in it associates that with the band and then more generally with thrash metal.

Yeah, because the band (and more broadly the genre) intentionally tries to go for a cthonic aesthetic to get the mood of their music across, and the AI is trying its' best to replicate that look.
And in regards to this, if you use a search engine to look up just the word 'reality', you mostly get stock images of people looking amazed while wearing Virtual Reality headsets. Lo and behold, that is what the AI produces in response to the same term.

I don't get the recent obsession with something that is so cold and calculative making use of information that is put out by people to create some different images and how they are related to anything even remotely paranormal

I searched Sentient on regular Google images and scrolled down a bit and there was similar images. Does that mean Google search is sentient? No. It's just matching keywords against labeled images. The difference with stable diffusion and similar ai is that it will match keywords with several images and basically merge the images together into a new image
