Very true, but the definition most people are talking about is the one from the science fiction of yesteryear, or at least that is the example. Likely, we will have AI that advanced within our lifetimes if we continue along our current pace. The only thing I could see stopping some of those AI from existing is a ban on researching, developing or employing advanced kinds of AI. I think that will be the case in the future if it does not completely destroy society first, although we will probably suffer the consequences of it first before coming to that decision.

Pretty low. The GPTs up to this point is just really good next-word predictor. If you got one good enough, sure, I think you could consider it an AGI, but it's going to have to go way beyond what GPT4 can do. And even then it will hugely inefficient, and some better method will eventually be discovered. Unless 5 is definitively AGI out of the gate, I'd say we have to wait a few more iterations. No one is going to play the is-it isn't-it game when we have a real AGI, it'll be pretty obvious.
As points out, GPT is great at mimicking intelligent conversation, but unable to really learn. It is essentially a sophisticated search function on highly curated training data. GPT-5 will be a quantitative change, not qualitative, and a qualitative change is needed to move towards AGI.

Even though it can perform on a human level or better in non-language domains like programming, it still does that only by guessing the next best token, it doesn't really "understand" the rules of a programming language.
Once we have narrow intelligence for every domain a human can understand and combine them together into one model, we will have "true" AGI.

Atm, what GPT is, is an incredibly competent bullshitter. Which is fine, some fields, like copy writing, advertising and humanities essays all they require is competent bullshitting but for other topics that a language model *should* be good at, it really isn't.
Today I asked it if it was trained on academic papers? Yes. Can you provide references to papers if I give you a topic? Yes. Please give me papers on [topic]. It produced a list of 5 papers, with believable names, authors that were real and conceivably could have written those papers, real publications, but none of the papers actually exist. I pointed this out and it goes "sorry yes those ones aren't real, here are some real ones..." and produces another list of made up papers.
I've found GPT-4 almost always references real papers. It can even point out flaws in papers if you ask it to list criticisms/methodological errors.
