I'm an artgay and I never got this argument because collages are considered art. And even if they weren't the ai art is so far removed from the source material that you can't even tell what it's mashing together. Artists need to humble themselves

        Anonymous

you actually have to be pretty careful with collage art in any commercial context because you can get slapped by copyright holders just like hiphopgays do with music samples. obviously if you're small time or just doing a school project or something you wont have a problem but once actual money and eyeballs start getting involved you really want to cover your bases.

the laion database in of itself is a pretty flagrant violation of data privacy, idk if it even meets the scrutiny of the standing eurocuck laws

AI was always meant to take over the creatives work because art has as much objectivities as subjectivities. Billions of prices of art are on the internet, and billions more ideals of innovation in art float around either as art itself or as things such a as essays and discussions. Any AI connected to the internet can look at this innovation as well as look at previous examples of art and create or mimick what it seems is acceptable to humanity using metrics such as "likes" or heighten discussion on particular prices.
Meanwhile and ironically work such as monotonous physical labor or even worse like analytics requires human subjectivity that an AI would be hard at actually replicating. There are already issues right now where AI comes up with the most hilariously racist and sexist plans for slightly lowering crime, do you think a business is going to have those programs up when asking what to do in their business strategy? No they are going to at best have a hybrid of both AI and human interpretation of AI calculations, but mostly won't bother with having an AI tell them that slaughter of the Black population would do well with sales of IRA's and instead just have their own analyst come up with a plan.

        >No one cares about AI art. It's all about the stolen data set.

COPE, not true and you know it

The underlying point the seething artists make is that no one cares about their feelings, that's what all the "has no soul" "deeper meaning" etc arguments are essentially about: "Why I did this" "What did I mean by this" "This is important to me"
Whereas the person looking at it usually doesn't care. And if the person did care, then artists have nothing to worry about, because people would reject all the AI art for not having any "meaning" behind it. But they don't and that pisses them off.

          Anonymous

Here's what an artist is actually doing.

          >"Why I did this"
Because my employer/patron asked me to.
          >"What did I mean by this"
I just follow the guidelines of the company/art director
          >"This is important to me"
Because I need to pay my bills.

If the motivation makes art, the making art in this context (such as on tv sets, within a video games studio, etc), then these people are not artists even if they claim to be. Otherwise, both them and AIs are prompted to make a mashup of ideas and concepts into a piece of art. Artists know that's what's really going on and that's why they are pissed that a machine can (or will be able to) do the job their boss would've asked them to do instead.

Artists are just pretentious, pompous and egotistical narcissists. When reality hits back and pops their dream bubble, all they can do is cry like the babies they are instead of having been proactive in adapting/preparing themselves to what was obviously coming for them.

      It's more like:
      >"Artist" draws a picture.
      >New artists looks at the picture and sees how they draw a face, how they draw hands, ect.
      >New artist looks at another picture.
      >New artist sees a trend.
      >New artist applies the same techniques to their new drawing.

It's exactly the same concept for an AI except a human can only look and imitate so much in a day where as the AI can do countless in a second.

They haven't touched your work. Just looked at it.

You may not copy them wholesale, but the ideas you are probably think have been already recorded, implied, or maybe even outside said word for word but in where you wouldn't even find. An AI connected to the internet can see this too and create using that information. Is your idea of "creation" something entirely new? Because if that is true then art stopped 'creating' a long time ago

I have no problem with Ai art. It's all about the loain dataset that's full of stolen art. There is plenty of free images, stock photos and if they made teaching the ai opt-in I imagine lots of people would want their art represented. The ai doesn't learn like a human. I see a piece of art and I'm inspired. So I take all my experience, taste, view as a human and put my own spin on that image/style. There is no comparison with ai in this case as it has no unique view or meaning to express. It's not intelligent. It's a glorified photobasher.

All sounds nice but how do you know how much of what you put into a picture is necessarily what others get out ? I think the value is more determined by the person who wants to use the picture , if I need ‘a picture of a cat in a field with a broken bike’ and a computer can provide that in a fraction of a second, what additional value does the stuff you’re talking about bring when the end result achieves all that was required of it anyway

If a human artist had never ever seen any other humans’ art, could they create ?

This is false because the ai isn't human.

Kek, AI does not steal anything from you. It looks at your art and finds inspiration, reference, data to source from, just like a human does. Because it's exactly the way it was supposed to be like, you know. Like a human.

If I'm allowed to look at your artwork and find inspiration for my project, then I'm also allowed to write my own AI script that does the same thing but faster for me.

Now, the real argument is that you're being replaced, just like a lot of programmers will be (my case). With that, the simple question is this: If I want a product X, why should I pick you instead of the AI?

The only right answer to that would be:
      1) You do a better job
      2) You do it cheaper
      3) We pay you to keep you on social welfare so your life has a pseudo-meaning and you don't die out of hunger

Its not just troons, don't just group all artists together. Its so fricking moronic how people here are all blackpilled on ai voiding themselves of meaning but at the same time fully willing to shoot themselves in the foot because some artists are screaming lefties. Trying to "own the artists" does nothing but push technology to overrule us.

There's no stopping it, it's too late. There's no way to ban it, so what's the point in protesting? The thing is, the AI will eventually encompass everything, not just art. We are all fricked. But I'm not concerned, I see no point worrying about it, because it does nothing.
Anyway, I think most people cheering and enjoying the artist tears here don't really understand that art is just the first step (not so many years ago people thought art would be the last and unconquerable step for an AI, which just shows how much people generally underestimate the tech)

Your defeatist attitude lacks nuance. There are ways of telling and analysis that can be done to determine whether its ai or not. Also almost every ai artist I've seen on platforms don't come from normal artwork backgrounds, if you go to their profiles or histories they usually start by drawing stick figures then all of the sudden they draw big breasted anime waifus out of nowhere. The ways of telling cannot be more obivous. Additionally screenings and metadata can be added to confirm where it is from or if it is from an ai or not. (e.g. you have a psd file to go with your work).

          Anonymous

No you don't understand. It doesn't matter if you can determine whether it's made by AI or not. Because the consumer of it doesn't care.
It's not defeatist, it's just the reality of it.
Let me ask you this: when was the last time you bought something metallic that was handmade, are the forks in your house done by a blacksmith? How about your glassware, was that manually made? Wooden things made by hand? Do you really care how it's made? Do you base majority of your purchases on whether it was factory made or made by hand? You probably don't.
Sure you know whether your shoes were made by a local shoemaker or have soles injection molded and sewn together by a machine or some child worker somewhere in Asia, but you don't really care, all you care about is that it does what it is supposed to do.
Then there's the manufacturing cost, which directly affects the prices - you wanna buy $20380 handmade knife with imperfections, or do you buy the $70-150 one that is better quality.
Ideally it would be nice to live in some artisan village with locally sourced everything, but that's not how any of us really live.

            Anonymous

You're comparing something with utilization to something that has meaning behind the pieces. A consumer of art doesn't use a painting to mow their lawn. If you're gonna use a false dichotomy you found cut and paste from a subreddit plz try harder

              Anonymous

No you idiot, art is just the beginning.
And yes art has utility to it's viewer; I never cared WHY Van Cogh painted what he did, the only thing I care about what the paintings make me feel, and what meaning do I assign to it; what meaning the painting has for me.
This same applies to AI art, the art than an AI makes can make me feel things, it can make something I want to look at. That's all people really care about.
Ask pretty much anyone if they like a painting by someone, then ask what was the motivation of the artist to make that particular piece, I bet most people don't know or care to know. They look at art for themselves, not for the artist.
People's feelings are separate from the artist's feelings, which means people can feel things even if the artist had none to begin with.
But this is easily provable, let's see if people stop doing the AI art thing.
I bet they don't. I bet more forms of entertainment will be made my AI algorithms.

This is actually true and bit sad. The story writing AI's tend to be really harebrained and forgetful about the context. I'd guess same continuity problem would be for video format.

                >this isn't AI,
We are already creating images from words, what makes you thing you can't create series of images from words? We can create voice, sounds and music too. You clearly don't understand how neural networks work, but let me give you a crash course:
                >you initialize random weight values
                >you feed it input data
                >you tell it what output data that input is supposed to produce
                >the input goes through the weight values and produces an output
                >calculate the error between the produced output and the desired output
                >make adjustments based on the error value, so on the next iteration he error is smaller
                >do this 6 gorillion times until the error is small enough
                >the network is now trained to handle new unseen inputs
This process can be done with ANY data, you just have to clarify what are the distinct inputs. Now comes the fun part: you can chain and combine multiple different networks.

                >we're still gigaparsecs away from that
                We really are not.

Well, you've studied those things, I've programmed rudimentary versions of neural networks for a living. It wasn't so long ago when people said it can never paint a picture it can't produce art, I tried to tell people that it can and very soon. They thought art was the final barrier it cannot break, but it was one of the very first ones.
People have a hard time grasping how the AI is able to do things, let me put it this way: how did you learn to do write english online? By watching others do it, or by watching movies etc. The same applies to art, to music, you learn by seeing/hearing it. An AI does that, but with VASTLY more accurate interpretation of that data, and astronomically larger data sets (songs listened). There are already services that generate visual art from keywords as seen on this thread and all over the net, or essays, or reddit posts from few verbal instructions like "generate a Reddit AITA about me selling stolen fish because of greed, in the writing style of Shakespeare" and the AI does that.

Exactly. Artists need to get real, productive jobs now. If you can't make enough money doing something economically productive to fund your art hobby, then I doubt you have enough passion and drive to ever become actually talented at it. If nobody actually wants to buy your art on an open market then it's time to stop playtending as an aristocrat by living on the dole and producing shitty art that nobody wants. The next frontier of artists will need both aesthetic and digital expertise. They will treat AI as a tool and will master the tech to generate art at orders of magnitudes of more output. The conquest of art by human-AI symbiosis has enormous metaphysical implications for future societies.

Don’t artists get inspiration and learn from copying others ? Like musicians learn by learning other songs and then from all the little parts they can come up with their own , just like I learned to code by reading code other people wrote , but if you instead view it as a data problem and send that source data into a machine into a person WAAAHHH THIS IS COPYING!! ,,, you mean like you do with your brain?!

Ai isn't human and it doesn't think or plan it follows programming and provides an output. There is no comparison between training ai and human learning. And when a human makes art it doesn't literally copy paste sections of images and blend them together. And if it does it may violate copyright.

The beautiful thing about Midjourney and AI art in general is that you can take someone's description of an ideal version of themselves, in whatever terms they want, and it will generate something that will hit harder than anything a human artist possibly could, precisely because it isn't clouded by something as silly as the artists own interpretation.

The datasets are already made, and the model is already trained on those datasets. If all the artists stopped producing art, the level of the AI would remain the same. So your assessment of "AI doesn't work without constantly using pictures as references" is wrong. Unless you delete the trained model, the AI continues to function without any external references, because all the reference pictures are already in the model as adjusted weights [pic related]. It won't evolve that's true. So it'll be limited to what it can produce.

Though what happens when you generate images with the AI, and use those to train it further?

I'm literally generating images locally on my computer with no outside resources whatsoever. The models are already trained.

Because artists won't be honest about the real reasons they hate AI.
It has nothing to do with being replaced, and they know it.
Artists are actually angry because they have a whole culture around actually hating the artistic process, and constantly joke about how difficult it is to learn.
Learning to draw takes years, and requires you to learn some of the most boring shit to just improve some basic skills.
AI will replace that entire process. Instead of hunting for references, you'll just be able to generate them and adapt them for your work.
Artists hate that, they hate the idea of all the hours thrown at learning a skill will be essentially wasted once learning through AI becomes the norm.
AI won't replace the human need to be creative. Artists all know this. They just hate that the technology wasn't there for them when they needed it, and are salty at the new generations who'll have an infinitely easier time learning than they did.

If they were just honest about why they hated it, I would actually sympathise with them. But the more they b***h about AI stealing their shit, or AI replacing them, the more I want to watch their careers burn.

Agreed so far (as of yet) no artists have lost their jobs or commissions to AI. However AI poses an existential threat to the "identity" of being an artist. It's a big reason graphic designers and illustrators are not really freaking out about AI and using in their work but they seek commercial use. Ironically enough its graphic designers that face the biggest threat to downsizing and automation.

I side with AI on this because leftist artists are part of the fricking problem. They had no problems with the rest of society getting fricked, but now that it affects them, frick them. The more they get redpilled, the better. THere are different paths to redpills, but ultimately they lead to the primary path. Think of it as a tree. Somewhere along the lines we all saw a little branch or leaf that made us think "wait, this is fricked", and then as we look more into it, we get into bigger branches, and a lot of us are now on the trunk, heading for the roots. The more, the better.

        >Learning to draw takes years, and requires you to learn some of the most boring shit to just improve some basic skills.
It's common in all humans that participate in the ongoing industrial revolution and then see their lives change overnight. It must've happened 100 times by now.
Actual people are hurt, but other people benefit. New people grow up with it and adapt. It's probably unsustainable but no one knows that, or when, or how.
It reminds me of 2D animators freaking out about 3D animation, and some of them did quit or were replaced, but now there's an entire industry of 3D artists. Soon they'll be worrying about AI that can spit out fully sulcpted and topo'd models and animation

The real problem is copyright. If an artist can't make money in art less will participate. Less data for the ai to use. It will eventually be Clipart.

That's a real possibility for the outcome. We may have just created Globohomosexual art for the next century, and don't know it yet.
Who will toil for literally 30 years before inventing a new style if 1. they won't get paid during those 30 years, and 2. the moment their new style exists it'll be copied and done better than them

            >"If an artist can't make money in art less will participate"

Artists like to say "just commission a human if you want to see art," and fair enough--it is cool that talented people who spent 20 years get paid for making cool stuff I want to see. But they don't mention that I can create 500 images with AI art in an hour, whereas I'd never pay 500 artists. No one would.

there's no difference between an AI artist and a real one.
all artist use references. all artists get inspired by other artists and it shows in their art.
even making your own design you have to come up with a prompt.
I drew a cat girl OC and even though I never even heard of Night in the Woods, she looked like a mix between Mae and Katia Managan.
it's just gatekeeping because artists usually make their entire identity about art so the idea of some programmer entirely destroys their ego.
