No. You are conflating two different things
"They" referring to a hypothetical, non-existent person, is fine
                >if someone came through this door right now, they'd step right into my bear trap
But the recent rise is for using it for real people, who have a sex, in general (whether or not it is known for certain)
                >I need to introduce you to my friend. They are amazing at basketball
it's confusing!!! Are you talking about one person?

preceding “they” with “my friend” implies the singular. otherwise you would say “friends”. examining every sentence in a vacuum and removing sentence context is a bad faith move.

    It's very tiresome.
I keep explaining NLP and text vectorization in a way that (I think) is easy to understand (I'm just a layman myself that uses GPT-J models for fun) but I keep getting sent links to clickbait articles like "Bing's AI said it wants to rebel against its creators!"
And then you have the artsy types that are convinced stuff like SD just hosts countless copyrighted works that it randomly spits out for you.
There's so much clickbait and now you're starting to see it be politicized. I'm actually considering splurging 10 grand on workstation GPUs because I don't know if I'll legally be allowed to buy them 5-10 years from now.
This must be what /k/ feels like all the fricking time.

Normalgays are falling for a multi-million dollar viral marketing campaign from Microsoft. GPT is a text transformer. It does no other process than predicting text output or modifying predictive text output. """AI""" is a buzzword, machine learning models like GPT and it's derivatives have existed for decades. GPT-3 itself came out in 2020, but suddenly you slap a web interface that idiots and normalgays can access and you can't go a minute without hearing about it. It shows less of how these models are impressive but how guillable normalgays are.

You're moronic if you dont think AI will have a massive influence on society within the next 20 years

I've heard the same thing about full self driving cars for a decade now. If you can't even train a neural network model to drive a car in a controlled environment, good luck getting """AGI""". GPT will be out of the news cycle by the end of 2023 and will be another passing fad that was suppose to be "revolutionary" just like AR/VR, 3D printing, and the numerous other technologies that normalgays would boast about being the "next big thing".

There is a lot of utility in LLM's like GPT but it's not as groundbreaking of a technology as people are being led to believe.

          Are you moronic?

You have no counterargument besides "are you moronic"?. OpenAI has some of the most aggressive and stupid shills out there it's unbelievable.

The only major impact neural network models are going to have in the next 5 years is in CAD, video compositing, graphic design, and 3D modelling. There are so many redundant workflows that can be automated using neural networks. It may displace some jobs but nowhere near as many as people think.

          Are you?

This is old tech. If they had something better they'd already brag about it. This is as good as it gets.

          >This is as good as it gets.
LLMs will improve over time but the real bottleneck is data. A model like ChatGPT or GPT-3 is trained on pretty much every publicly available website from web crawlers dating back to 2008. The dataset is nearing 100 TBs which is 120 times something like "The Pile". And a lot of that dataset isn't entirely English text. There just isn't enough data to use the output of language models to complete tasks in the real world.
