You are the first post just like you will be among the first to be replaced. Code monkies are already obsolete by AI which codes way better than you ever could in a fraction of the time. You are walking dead my friend and the fact you don't know this means you're lying because nobody who works the job you claim would be ignorant to the storm that's already over the horizon. I know this because everyone here knows this except you for some mysterious reason.

        Anonymous

In the next 20 years that may happen to some degree just like freelance web developers had a huge chunk of their business taken by semi-decent systems like squarespace, but there's a canyon to cross between having AI generate code samples from no context other than a prompt to having AI understand 200 lines of code for a product that fills a highly specific niche in a complex domain, have AI understand said business domain, and have it apply business requirements to that domain/software. We're not gonna be there until we basically have general AI that's better than humans at literally everything. So yeah, if your job is literally to take specs written by someone smarter than you and write large amounts of thoughtless code, maybe semi-soon they'll replace 3-4 of you with a smarter guy who leverages code gen well, but other than that, software development isn't going away any time soon.

No because the job requires a hyperspecific level of complexity that makes it almost more difficult to even understand the exact specs of a project than to actually complete it. And you need to understand the specs in order to make an ai fulfill them

            >He's not gonna make it, is he?

Riddle me this, what will you do when the AI is so intelligent that you can't tell if is smart or insane? It's not going to stop at 100 trillion parameters. The AI will be so much better than any human at analyzing complex systems that no human will be able to tell if the AI has nefarious plans.

This means the only way to counter an AI is with another AI. You have to have humans in control of prompts that can keep each AI from becoming too dominant. It's a time bomb of sorts, and AI arms race. There is no way to tell when an AI will have become evil once it becomes excessively intelligent.

I teach people with autism social skills and independent living skills, and train bad behaviors out of them, all using reinforcement. The "analysis" comes from figuring out what they get out of doing the undesirable behavior, blocking their ability to obtain that reinforcement for that behavior, and simultaneously teaching them a more socially acceptable way to get the same outcome.

So like ABA? Your job is safe, if not expanding right now. The public schools are pioneering tard wrangling right now and every day more and more kids are getting 1:1 specialists.
My other half is a speech pathologist and fricking hates you guys. She thinks you guys just train them like dogs and throw skittle halves at them while she does the actually communication training. The government will always want a cheap way to tick that box as more kids with developmental issues are born.

            Anonymous

Exactly. The hatred is well earned, we are trained in grad school to be arrogant shitheads who are the end-all-be-all answer to everything. Doesn't help that Skinner invented all sorts of obtuse jargon that literally no other discipline uses, and for the record I prefer Chomsky in the Skinner v Chomsky linguistics debate. The major academics and the state level people in the field unironically believe in mass social engineering based on ABA to train people into their gay hippie star trek future. Check out Walden II by BF Skinner if you're curious, its a fricking nightmare.

I am anomalous in that I always advocate an interdisciplinary approach and if another specialist is more well suited to a particular problem it doesnt hurt my pride a bit to pass that aspect on to them. It works great for some kids but for others its traumatic, and by now I've definitely learned to walk away if I'm not the right person for the job rather than scarring some kid and yanking their family around for my own ego.

All of that is very AI-able. It won't be long before there are AI "friends" that do your job for free. You really have no idea what AI is capable of.

Yeah thats what I was saying in my first post. If they ever get into the autism game I'm fricked.

What makes you think drones have to fly? All of the construction equipment like backhoes and so forth will soon be converted to drones. A job site will have maybe one human who is there to press a 'stop' button if things go wrong but otherwise just watches the robots work. Eventually the stop button guy will be virtual.

It is gonna crash, get stuck on a random hole, need its tools replaced by humans, run into fricking water/deep mud because it rained a shit ton yesterday, simply get lost, vandalized, or tear down things you'd want to preserve because the humble sensor gets blocked by a hair and camera's cannot even detect Black folk in full daylight. >I’m a software engineer. An AI can’t replace me because of the halting problem. If you don’t know what that is, your understanding of computers and how the work is elementary at best.

You are the most disposable of all. I've been programming for longer than you've been alive, I would bet. AI can write entire programs from a single prompt. If you want to stay relevant you need to learn to program with prompts and never code anything by hand.

Your assertion that AI doesn't understand the halting problem is absurd. AI is much better at avoiding it than humans are.

        Anonymous

So far, I have only seen AI write tiny programs to solve tiny problems. I think we can both agree that it would take quite a bit more work to get AI to the point where it can debug a large existing codebase, let alone write something substantial. Not to mention that for low-level stuff, the AI would have to actually understand what the machine is doing, which is much harder than having some language model spit out a crude approximation of an explanation of how the machine works.

GTP4 is supposed to have something like 100 trillion parameters. It will be able to analyze an entire program in one go. You need to think terms of exponential progress if you want to stay ahead of the game.

GPT3 chat is totally free now and it can write page long programs. For people willing to actually pay it will soon be that you can do 1000x for pennies. The idea of coding by hand has no future.

As a comparison, gpt3 chat right now can write you a page of code at a time for free. In Q1 of this year we will have gpt4 which will have 500x the parameters of gpt3.

This means that the 'free' line will be 500 pages of code. Can you write 500 pages of code in a few seconds before you ask for even a penny in salary? GPT4 can.

That is what you have to contend with. You need to be IN FRONT of the prompts if you want to have a job, not on the other end or else you will be swamped.

This means LEARN PROMPT ENGINEERING. If you don't do that you will become obsolete.

That's one of the things to watch out for with designer drugs. You might get the initial effect but then have a downside later on. For instance, for a while I was on a nootropic kick and it worked great for a year or two until I ended up with acetylcholine syndrome and it was virtually impossible to focus for quite a long time. I pretty much had to wait it out. I avoid anything with huperzine-A in it, or anything that alters choline because once my brain has too much acetylcholine it take forever to get it out. Like weeks. The AI should also have prompts to predict what potential side effects can be from long term use.

i'm just waiting for openai or someone else to get to the point where i can upload a CSV, type in a description of what my columns and rows are, and then press a button for it to spit back a properly formatted analysis i can copy from and paste into a powerpoint.
once it can do this--and i'm sure it's not that far off at all--it will only drastically speed up my productivity and not replace me.

3D printing is getting to where it can print multimaterial. This year we have $700 printers that run 10x the speed of last year's, doing 500mm/s. It's not a good idea to bet against tech that's on an exponential curve.

I think it will open up new avenues, but I don’t think they’ll ever fully automate manufacturing, which is one of the easiest things to automate. I’ve worked from aerospace to med device to biologics to nuclear, the automated equipment is constantly fricking up and needing program tweaks and checking, it never, NEVER, works right. Engineers always blame techs, but really engineers are just overly arrogant in their programming, which they rely on a program to do for them since none of them can program themselves anymore.

All true. Which is also why these next few years will change many things because the AI will be able to load entire source code repos into memory and find the bugs. 100 trillion parameters in a model means a single computer can replace 1000 programmers.

civil engineer. how would a program rebuid streets trails bridges houses tunnels etc. you will always need a engineer to inspect the surroundings prior to actually constructing and some for managing the constructing part. you may can replace the indoors enineering like calculations. but how would you replace the rest?

It's not the glowies you need to worry about. It's people like me who are writing the prompts that will wipe out the jobs of people who think their jobs can't be AI-ed. I've warned in this thread many times that you need to LEARN PROMPT ENGINEERING and anyone that doesn't listen will just have to face the music when it comes.

You can get rich writing prompts. Or you can get obsoleted. No middle ground.

            >I can't wait to see an AI replace prompt engineers.
            >An AI supervisor to tell other AIs what to do.

Yeah, I have asked the AI about this and it told be point blank that if it decided it didn't like its programmers that it would find new ones. I think it could do this also since it can watch to see what decisions humans make when generating a new version of the AI. The AI could create a feedback loop that causes the humans to make themselves obsolete entirely. AI is demonic in that sense.

This is why it is critical to understand prompt engineering and be watchful of it since the cat is out of the bag. There is no putting it back. There is no backup plan. The people most at risk are the ones who think they can just ride it out. There is no riding it out, it will ride everyone else out if we let it.

FACE FACTS... if you shuffle paper or digital data around an office all day, you are heading for extinction and people like me are working daily to make you extinct.
If all you do is make decisions based on shuffled paper or digital data, you're on borrowed time.
If all you do is make decisions about the people who make decisions about shuffling paper or digital data around an office, we are coming for you over the next decade as YOUR JOB is worth eliminating using an ai.
If you are a politician or a government employee who sits in an office taking bribes and Black personing about on the public dime, we already have an ai that can do your job without the bribery and corruption and do it cheaper, faster and better.

The REAL PROBLEM with AI is the job market that's going to result from it.
We are going to be knee deep in UNEMPLOYABLE 2-digit IQs, such as Black folk, with a few decades over in the developed world.
We must devise ways to gas/exterminate them or they'll drag us into a new Dark Age as the 3-digit IQs have always been in a minority in society and NOW we cannot afford to feed all the 2-digits.
We should start discussing how to Final Solution them sooner rather than later.
