It will be many decades before they automate all of it. The infrastructure isn't there for the final mile delivery. They will start automating long haul very soon, but there's a driver shortage anyway and those long haul gigs are becoming harder and harder to fill as the baby boomers retire.

The young generation has no interest in truck driving. The remaining market will be filled by mostly immigrants.

The automation of jobs and the displacement of workers has been a concern for many industries for many years, not just truck driving. The widespread adoption of AI and other advanced technologies has the potential to create significant disruptions in the job market and lead to widespread unemployment, particularly for workers in industries that are more susceptible to automation.

The scenario you describe, of a large number of displaced truck drivers blaming AI companies for their problems, is certainly a possibility. However, it's important to note that the displacement of workers is a complex issue that involves a range of social, economic, and political factors, and it's unlikely to be the result of a single cause.

To address this issue, it will be important for governments, businesses, and other organizations to work together to ensure that the benefits of automation are widely shared and that those who are displaced by these technological advances are provided with the support and resources they need to find new employment opportunities. This could include initiatives such as retraining programs, job placement services, and other forms of social support.

Automation happens regardless of whether or not it’s a dumb idea.

      Couldn't be more wrong.
Autonomous systems are already better than any human driver on the planet regardless of weather conditions.
Their sensors are better than human eyesight, their responses are quicker, they don't panic, they don't get distracted, they never drive while sleepy or intoxicated, etc.
Literally the only reason there are still human truck drivers is because all of the legal regulations are based on the assumption that there is a human driver. Vehicles are still required to have manual brakes and steering controls. All the liability and insurance issues. Only licensed drivers are allowed to drive them, but there is no way for a autonomous vehicle to get a CDL.
All of these issues can be overcome, and there are numberous industry/government working groups that are drafting new proposed legislation to fix these issues. Once they are done, being a human truck driver will be just as obsolete of a job as being a stagecoach driver. Maybe more.

It's going to take a while for self driving semi trucks to be approved for use, if it ever happens, and also the cost being non prohibitive will take a while as well.
But the bigger hurdle is the governments that want to control what you're allowed to consume in totality letting a computer control an 80,000 pound truck. Which isn't something I find likely to happen for a while. I see the corrupt governments of the world collapsing entirely before self driving in general gets to the point of widespread adoption. Let alone self driving high capacity assault trailers.

Truckers are fricking pussies. 99% of them do notouch hauling and deliveries because they're fatasses who've never exercised a day in their life and as a result have blown out backs and knees. They work for conglomerates which outsource every role of the traditional trucker to outside entities and wonder why they don't make shit for pay. I was a trucker for well over a decade and worked on the loading and logistics side as well. Almost all truckers are whiny babies who couldn't solve a minor problem if their lives depended on it.

      >implying modern truckers unload shit
      >implying modern truckers touch loads let alone build and secure them
I don't know how it is in upsidedownland but vanishingly few truckers up here do a goddamn thing to their loads, other than the sikhs who ratchet their shit down with a 12ft cheater bar so hard that they severely damage the load.
