Giant RC cars and reusable rockets have been a thing for decades lol. He just put a brand on them and morons like you worship him.

You guys have been saying we’d have full self driving Tesla taxis and people living on mars by 2020. It’s almost 2023, and nothing.

How are those solar panels, those tunnels, and electric semi trucks coming.

Imagine believing electric semi trucks would even work lol, you must be an absolute moron to think a trucker wants to spend his whole day charging the b***h, instead of driving.

Teslas AI and Robotics are embarrassingly behind where you think it’s going to be.

      >factory defects
Factory defects on new lines of cars is incredibly common, hence why you're supposed to look it over and note the defects sp that they can be fixed.

That being said, tesla defects are mostly gone now with only 5% or some cars (all of which mainly come out of the U.S. manufacturing plants. Weird how it doesnt really happen with the china or berlin manufactured cars, almost like US employees are dumb and care less) having slight panel gaps.

Listen, I think space is cool as hell. And I'm not going to say reusable rockets aren't a significant development, and that cheaper satellites aren't important. But notice that Bezos made space his retirement hobby, not his method of accumulating billions. It's got a lot of room to grow, sure, but it's always going to be second-thought to where you get your groceries and toilet paper.

Elon himself said that making rockets is a terrible way to make money. Are you seriously praising Blue Origin for making a suborbital joyride in a bigger timeframe than it took SpaceX to make Falcon 9?

You must reserve fuel to land rockets. And you know what that means if you have to save fuel? Less enegery to get your cargo into space. Fricking dumbass. NASA, would have spent many of their budget on R and D if it was a problem worth solving.

Reusable rockets only make sense once you understand the problem they solve.
Essentially by making rockets single use, each rocket is a special built custom order that is not factory produced in a meaningful way, because of how high the tolerance requirements are. That makes them very very expensive.
Reuse means you can build a more expensive rocket so long it lasts 2-3 trips. Since rockets are fundamentally not produced at a real economy of scale

The other anon replying to you will spout some bullshit, and don't get it.

To be fair outside of SpaceX he has so far generally been a mixed bag in terms of results.
And realistically SpaceX's main success has been in its approach to supply chains and just actually doing shit without a government contract rather than actual new technology.

I understand your scepticism, and partially share it, but it's worth noting that Asimo is a finished product, and what was shown today is a very early prototype Tesla made in a year. To be honest, I half-expected Elon to just sweep the robot promise under the rug.

the moronic CEO of Boeing at the time cancelled the delta 2 series to sell more expensive delta 4 series rockets. this allowed SpaceX to even exist due to a demand for delta 2 sized rockets.

AI is a meme even with really accurate models you will see single digit errors. if used in critical applications like driving it will result in multiple times more fatalities a year of innocents and bankruptcy via lawsuits.

he builds rockets, that is credit. OP claims revolutionary function, he build a replacement rocket with a higher failure rate and inferior propulsion because the better one was voluntary ended. that is not revolutionary, that is 1970's Russian Soyuz tier.

He (his company) built commercially viable reusable rockets. That's a huge improvement over what we had before that.

            Anonymous

reusability has been a thing since '81. not all companies pursued reusability due to requiring extra fuel which reduced operation envelope. it's not exactly a revolutionary feature, it just allows for different operating parameters. in the case of SpaceX it lowered costs and allowed them to pay off the ponzi of selling launches in advance early on.

              Anonymous

That's why I wrote commercially viable. That's a big part of pioneering a technology which many here don't seem to get.

where they not commercially viable before SpaceX? to push his operation envelope on the same platform reusability would be compromised. he is bound by the same laws of physics every other company is.

yea he took the market Boeing (now ula) dismissed by scrapping the delta 2. they were focusing on putting bigger payloads deeper in space. In my opinion they were moronic but they were also getting a "free" 2 billion/year to stay launch ready. essentially ula was surviving by just being able to theoretically launch at anytime. in the process they just told the little payload guys to buy the big rocket. Elon sold them a replacement small rocket. this chart is really incomplete since it doesn't take into account payloads and mission parameters. it's obvious people are going to buy the cheapest rocket that meet the operation parameters. in many cases with the ever expanding satellite communication landscape SpaceX is more than capable of delivering the low orbit coms satelites. again not saying he isn't a fun guy, just still not seeing the revolutionary part.

                >just still not seeing the revolutionary part.
The fact that the first stage of their rocket can be reused more than 10 times due to being able to land itself with high precision might be it.

                Anonymous

                >might be
it's not really. again anyone could have done that, NASA did, and I know Boeing considered it as a design criteria but opted not to. Lockheed and Boeing traded reusability for higher performance. it's not good or bad, just two different approaches. your 4 cylinder is more economical but you might need the 8 to move a payload. two completely different performance envelopes there is no best of both worlds. for instance look at the vulcans giant centaur stage, it's not reusable but look how much lighter it is. sure they could make it reusable but would need to beef it up to make it last. is you mission to put up a thousand low earth coms sats or a giant ass geosync spy satelites over russia?

Because most space exploration firms where about government subsidies, pork or being funded without the intent of dealing with the supply chain.
So if you are buying off shelf hardware you have to deal with what the market offers, and therefore can not innovate. But because you are buying off shelf hardware its fully possible to make a better solution via picking better parts and doing a more pragmatic design that minimizes the flaws the parts bring when combined.

I still think Tesla is the best success story under Musk, because it can be told without knowing why Rocketry is a wonky field.
All the tale of Tesla requires to be told, is to point at any of the attempts at making a BEV with too little capital to even try to deal with the supply chain issues that made it infeasible. Making a BEV without making the batteries is a doomed affair because if you upscale your increase the price of the batteries via market mechanisms, something production allows you to ignore.

Don't take this as moral defense of Amazon (they should be broken up), but as a firm reminder that Amazon is what an actually innovative company looks like.
