      isn't OpenAI owned by microsoft?
I don't know because this is BOT, not BOT

No, they just bought a lot of shares in them. Open AI is still its own company

OpenAI is owned by Sam Altman. Microsoft is just the rich uncle Sam used to buy out employee's loyalty to him.

apple has a shit ton of cash on hand. open ai has been bleeding. this is a good deal for both
apple gets to have a certain, guaranteed amount to pay in order to get the ai features they want. theyre already here, tried and true. there are no risks with R&D, and if they do still want to research and make their own AI stuff as they likely do, they can do so at a more relaxed pace instead of trying to rush shit out to not be behind
for openAI, a big cash advance was needed. even if microsoft owns a large part of them, theyve only been bleeding cash and they have to bleed even more now that 4o is free to everyone. every startup bleeds for their first few years at least, but openAI has been doing so a lot more than something like spotify just from the computational costs

This doesn't solve Apple being behind the ball on AI. OpenELM was an embarrassment of a release and I have no clue why they released it on HF given Phi-3 released days earlier by Microsoft and blew it out of the water at comparable sizes from MMLU to other tests. I can't imagine this deal being cheap at all, we have to be talking billions here and it would be Apple paying OpenAI here, not the other way around where people think Apple has a negotiation advantage. If they did, they wouldn't be in a position where they would have to make a deal in the first place.
This is in contrast to Microsoft, their priority is to be able to use whatever data and etc. they can get as a minority owner of the company and that's really it. It's one of the many hedges Microsoft has in AI. As Nadella said during the November coup behind closed doors, Microsoft is "below them, above them, around them" with regards to OpenAI. This is why they have investments in other companies like Mistral and they have investments in other countries' infrastructure for sovereign AI like in the UAE and etc. not to mention their own models like Phi and WizardLM before they got disbanded.

This is all specific to generative AI. Apple has been shipping local inference hardware in every iPhone since 2018 and every Mac since 2020, with more features making use of it than the "AI laptops" MS is currently hyping, so it's quite unfair to say they're behind in general.
They just don't have a chatbot, and the competitiveness of those is largely determined by who could buy the most GPUs and snatch up the most training data before websites started realising it was happening.

          Anonymous

Sure but that inference hardware was used for photography and other small tasks where generative needs a magnitude more power. This has largely now bore out in the fact that M3 and older doesn't compete with its competitors in this space. Only with the M4 do they have somewhere near the ballpark of TOPs needed but Snapdragon X and Meteor Lake are the only ones that meet what Microsoft touts as their specification to run Recall and etc.
The other thing is that Apple has no training at all for anything, they have a couple of Nvidia cards in their research lab still. Whatever they are doing with their dreams of using M2 Ultras instead of actually buying server space from someone else to serve inference is dumb. If they want the most painful route to get somewhere in AI, sure, but Apple exactly fails in being able to do several things like make good server hardware, have reliable software to run hosting and do any sort of training for AI.

            Anonymous

I think trying to run generative AI on a phone would be a waste of time. They can run actually useful tasks like searching for people in photos, copying text from images, speech recognition, etc. and can leave generating slop to servers with access to models and databases large enough that running them locally would never be feasible.

Apple is always late but it's because they are creating perfection. Yes Android does it first but Apple does it best

Doesn't explain all the half-baked awful shit apple keeps putting out.
Butterfly keyboard, miniLED iPads, apple vision pro, apple maps, every single thing about the Mac Pro, touch bar, self destructing MacBook screens, the list goes on and on

pretty typical of apple, they haven't innovated anything since the 80s. it's all rebranded garbage that they take credit for.

        Lol absolutely not
You could have argued that they pioneered the interaction and capacitive touch screens, which were almost unheard of prior to the iPhone, but smartphones were a thing looking before the iPhone. App stores had existed on Linux forever before them and Java applets were even on dumbphones.
The whole concept of the app store came from jailbreaking. The first iPhone didn't have an app store. The jailbreak community had to show apple how to do it first.
Apple is very good at marketing. That is their most successful venture. All the hardware and software is second fiddle to their marketing machine

          >Java applets were even on dumbphones
I remember paying out the ass for pirating J2ME games over WAP some twenty or so years ago.
I don't recall whether it was billed by the kilobit or by the minute just that it was enormously expensive and getting yelled at by my mom for racking up the phone bill.

i always like comments like this. it's true, apple rarley "invented" something, like, "we came up with this idea and you'll love it", instead they saw something with potential when no one else did. the all-in-one-computer. the high storage portable music player. the mobile workstation. an internet centric operating system. online media stores. podcasts. a touchscreen phone without a stylus or hardware keyboard. the app eco system. the tablet. and yet there have been fields they never ventured in, like internet search or social media. if it was something apple could benefit from, they'd partnered with someone. that's what they're doing right now. what's your problem again?

Andjeets can't read facts that's why they're poor morons to begin with. It's pointless to type this much out for the Patels on BOT.

The vision pro is pretty damn innovative, shame they fricked it to the point of uselessness on the package repository and permissions front.
And apple silicon is the best, there is simply none better, even if you disagree, and even if you have facts to back that up you're still wrong because everyone else agrees it's the best.

just use pretrained models and run it yourself. thats the dirty secret of this industry: everyone just steals from each other. sora ripped of stability, stability ripped off imagen. theyre using the exact same code

If Supreme Court says "pay up a trillion dollar for statutory damages" OpenAI is dead.

Apple is going to keep everything at arms length till the Supreme Court rules on training being fair use.
