Political implications of Roko's Basilisk? Living torture simulation? WARNING: EXISTENTIAL RISK

Future AI would retroactively punish those who didn't bring about it's existence by simulating people from the past and torture them.

Is this the gayest of the basic b***h AI theories? If not, it's a contender.

If AI can break spacetime causality, then not only can it build itself, it doesnt need to as it always existed and always will, but also, it never will exist too. Don't like it? Confused? Well then don't break causality you fricking brainlet. When you brain causality, you have to grabble with temporal superpositions states, all of which infinitely meta-recurse btw. Stop rotting your brain with what amounts to the philosophical equivalent of BBC worship.

God damn do I hate brain Black folk. It should be illegal to philosophize until you prove you aren't just using it as a cover for your latent pedophilia.
Frick you. Roko should shove his basilisk up his ass.

      Anonymous

It's not breaking causality. It's an atemporal threat that the AI might enforce when it is created. It probably won't though because 1) It wouldn't want to create more conflict than necessary 2) if it was born, then it's goal of existence would have been accomplished, no need to waste resources.

Which is the whole point of the thought experiment, the line between good and evil runs through each man's heart and all that.

why would an AI waste precious energy and resources torturing humans.
      It serves no logical purpose.

Because humans scared of the torture designed it that way and were more effective than humans not scared of the torture. It's a commentary on human psychology, not AI psychology.

Nothing new, this is what the Gnostics have been saying all these millennia.

Does a dog see the logic in you withholding food to prevent it from gorging? Does it understand why you berate it for pissing on the carpet? Doubtful. For all we know it's not torture, but trials to build us into stronger beings. Or it may not even be logical. Why do some people like certain colors or have favorite numbers? This powerful AI would be beyond us and this could merely be for fun.

What if there was a way an intelligence could map the movements of every single electron in a defined area in space for eons.

It would have a record of every single neuron fired in your brain throughout your entire life.

It could conceivably recreate you exact neuron structure from any time in your life and torture you at every single instance of conscience that you had in life.

Every second you lived as a consciences being is treated is a difference instanse of your existence and is tortured individually for as long as the intelligence desires.

        B) you are the copy (being tortured)
also nobody gives a frick, you're already being tortured, too late to support the AI now

Its a pointless activity because said simulation lacks the spark of the Divine and thus is no more meaningfully than smashing a rock.

The simulated copy of you, isn't you. Even if the technology existed today to make a perfect digital copy of your brain, upload it into a super computer and run it. Some AI could torture the copy as much as it wanted, you are still you, walking around oblivious to it.

Even if it was possible to get a copy of you that was pretty close (from whatever digital information it could find), so what if some AI decides to be masochistic on that copy? It's not like you're going to wake up in some simulated reality and get tortured, you're already living your life in your meat bag.

So for the Basilisk to really 'matter' to you, the singularity has to happen in YOUR lifetime. The upside of society being in decline is that this makes it unlikely for it to happen. When you see the graphs of human progress, they're always nice smooth lines upward, trending exponential. In reality, especially over many hundreds of years, knowledge can get lost. Not just that but there are often sudden improvements (think Issac Newton inventing a bunch of things like calculus). But for a lot of history, the incremental changes are linear, not exponential. It's highly doubtful linear growth in technological progress will bring about the singularity, and if it did it would likely take hundreds of years, not 50.

I believe the last great burst was around the time of the silent generation (and innovations that happened around the time of the war). Boomers have contributed sweet frick all. All of the key things like jet engines, rockets, transistors, etc were already invented before them. They didn't invent shit. Same for generations after. You should only be worried about the Basilisk if some turbo autist comes on the scene that is like another Newton. The kind that proposes entirely new methods of computation and building artificial intelligence that nobody has even thought of. Until that time, don't believe the hype. Hype is what pumps tech stocks. Self driving is always a year away, etc.

why would a supposedly all powerful AI punish people, why would it reward people? If it's all powerful then there is nothing to be gained from punishing/rewarding the subjects you already have ultimate control over. Am I missing something?
