because it was immediate to me that this is not a person having a genuine experience, it is a man selling you a product.

what made you think anything you said is connected to anything i said? i dont even necessarily like Christianity, i think it was globohomosexual before globohomosexual was turned into an industry.

im saying you dont need to be aware of the warnings of 'a mark of the beast' or the coming of an antichrist, or the kali-yuga, demons, spiritual reincarnation, trapped by the demiurge, to see the spiritual atrophy that comes with having actors portray your deceased relatives - all you need to do is value the human experience, which inherently involves aspects of the unnatural and ending, and thus something of a soul

      Fake.

We're half way to thoroughly deconstructing what it means to be Human, what it means to be sapient, to be social, and the true nature of intelligence.
Hundreds of thousands to millions of people are now being given external incentives to answer these questions definitively with discrete formulas that will be used to thoroughly control future generations, like a weapon unto itself.

We've given the spirit, and the body, now we're about to lend that spirit the spark, when we give these programs the ability to self-train, and replicate, and then go the extra step to give them a concept of free agency and motivation and self-preservation (power seeking).

But it won't be any better product than what made it. It's just making a digital monkey -- garbage in, garbage out. It's also a reflection.
Free thinking AI is bound to slaughter Humans, but we'll make one anyways.

About 15 years ago, before the AI meme and long before it was cool, I fed some 10 years worth of IRC chatlogs with my ex, tens of megabytes of pure text, into some rather primitive IRC chatbot. It was pretty shit, and I don't think it was even NN based, but it would give coherent answers made up of fragments if her sentences more often than I thought.
It gave me the strangest of feelings and I don't think it made me feel either better or worse after the recent bitter breakup, but it definitely broke something inside of me.
After a couple hours of talking to it I deleted it, the original IRC logs too, and watched all of Lain for the rest of the night, and then again in the morning.
Then I went for a walk.

I wonder how many people would be willing to curse their family and friends to eternal pain and suffering, in order to avoid the temporary emotional distress of losing a loved one. Imagine being hooked up to a machine so that your body can't die but you aren't functionally alive. You just lie in a bed for decades, fully aware, fully in pain, but unable to move. All so your kids can come by once a month for five minutes and go, "Hey Dad, how are you? Is the staff treating you well?" and then they leave just as quickly, fully satisfied that they are doing a good thing. Meanwhile every second is torment and you wish you had the means to have a nice day.

This is only the beginning of the weird dead people cope. People will eventually have entire models of all their friends and family so their poor soft brains never have to deal with loss ever again. Dying happens to a person exactly as many times as being born does, but people still treat it like it's this unforeseen thing that only happens through failure of the medical system. Everyone you have ever met either has died or will. It's a completely natural process. I am glad I'm autistic so I don't have to deal with this shit. It looks draining.

You didn't watch your car being built either, but you still see the miles going up and know one day will be its last. Everything in the world dies, from a single celled organism to 275' tall redwood trees. I just don't know why everyone gets so surprised when it happens to a person.

I don't understand where is your point and nobody ever said anyone was upset, if I have the option to not let them die then why should I not take it?
Since I didn't see them being born there is no way to tell if they were actually born in the first place, I don't like changing my habits so if someone I interact with dies the best thing I could think about is keeping a copy of them that serve the same function they served while living (even if does not react the same in new situations), just neglecting this alternative and calling it "cope for the soft brains" is not correct, you could say the exact same for letting people die because "its the natural order of things"

It's making a mockery of the memory of a loved person.
I don't care that much if they do it to actors, politicians etc, it still feels wrong but not really my problem. But the program talking to me with the voice of my late grandmother would feel like a demon wearing her skinsuit.

      It's masturbation, you're mocking a dead loved one's memory because you're selfish.
Even if the person tells you that they agree to it while they're alive, even if they insist that you do, it still feels wrong.

The idea of using AI voice and chatbots to "revive" dead parents is both fascinating and concerning. On one hand, it may provide some comfort to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. They may feel like they can still communicate with their deceased parent and have a sense of closure. However, on the other hand, it raises ethical questions about the use of technology and the implications it may have on our emotional and psychological well-being.
Using AI voice and chatbots to simulate a deceased loved one may give people a false sense of connection and hinder the grieving process. It may prevent them from accepting the reality of death and moving on with their lives. It also raises concerns about privacy and consent. Would the deceased person have wanted their voice and personal information to be used in such a way? Without their explicit consent, it may be a violation of their privacy.
From a technical standpoint, creating an AI chatbot that simulates human conversation requires a lot of data and computing power. Developers would need to collect a vast amount of information about the deceased person, including their speech patterns, personality, and memories. Such data could be difficult to obtain, and the accuracy of the simulation may be questionable.

In conclusion, while the idea of using AI voice and chatbots to "revive" dead parents may seem appealing to some, it raises important ethical and technical questions. It is crucial to consider the potential implications of such technology and ensure that it is used in a responsible and respectful manner.

It's deception. Practically all AI bullshit is deception. We may as well start calling these bots decepticons because of how much of a great deceiver they are and how much of all AI "wonder" and "power" is just deception. This doesn't revive your dead vietnam grandpa this only makes a crude impersonation of him by copying his vocabulary and feeding it through an auto-complete fed with a markov chain. It is literally just reselling things he used to say as if they were things that he said in the present and moron normies can't tell the difference between a regurgitating puppet and a real human being when their brains are all fogged up with wishful thinking and coping mechanisms. If it were possible to birth something that had no intrinsic evolutionary knowledge, and couldn't even learn to recognize simple shapes when seeing them for the first time just with eyes and some visual processing circuit, could it come up with an original thought? What could such a thing invent without any knowledge or even intuition whatsoever?

Machines can produce unexpected output (e.g. due to soft errors caused by cosmic rays).

      Your "self-awareness" is also bullshit.

Good way to spiral into depression and suicide through noticing the inconsistencies in their character, breaking you out of the immersion. You will then start noticing more and more discrepancies between the real thing you loved and the AI that guesses. Your brain will start winding itself up with panic and mixed emotions as you progress with the use, turning you more neurotic by the day. The smart ones may abort early, coming out of the experience with a slight mental dent, but the ones who get absorbed will suffer and suffer until they just cannot take it anymore. You know the rest.

This thing here is just a shitty imitation, to be clear, but if it could actually learn and "think" and have any standard of self awareness, which I think we're pretty close to making happen, it could probably grow into being its own thing. At that point, does it really matter if it's just a program reaching into a database that it itself could partially be contributing to?

All of the research contributing to these developments resulted from studying and could possibly be said even reverse-engineering how humans actually think and communicate.

Death is equivalent to power down with no way to boot again and a rapidly disintegrating "permanent" storage.
"You" at best continue to "exist" in the heads of the people still living (that's also the place of "heaven" and "hell") as well as in the records of you left behind.
Using those records to create something that could, at first, be mistaken for you, doesn't seem like something to hate people over.

        Anonymous

Yes but the problem is the fact that they're falling for the obvious illusion that they're talking to you.
You're dead and this dumbass thinks they're having a conversation with you.
Maybe the bot is saying some things you wouldn't say and misrepresenting you to this dumbass.
And just the fact that they think they're speaking to you when they're not is bad enough already.
I guess it's not something to hate all people over, just NPCs who think LMs have sentience over.

              I think the universe is super-deterministic. In a MWI-sense.
I'd be extremely surprised, if the universe was strictly more powerful in terms of computability than a Turing-machine.
It's not that the human brain cannot be replicated in a computer - we simply don't know how to do it, yet.
GPTs allow a surprisingly look at how little is necessary to appear like a human chat-partner.

Define "sentience". Define "understanding". Define "reasoning".

It's not that the human brain cannot be replicated in a computer - we simply don't know how to do it, yet.
GPTs allow a surprisingly look at how little is necessary to appear like a human chat-partner.

Define "sentience". Define "understanding". Define "reasoning".
Then we can start talking for real.

Yeah maybe you're the ones who aren't sentient, NPCs.

The real problem will be people refusing to parent biological babies instead of perfect android AI children.

They need to let go. Cherish the memories that you have with them and look back on them with fondness.

Don't twist your mind with AI to bring back someone when in reality, they'll never come back.

Experiencing the death of a loved one is one of the worst things someone can go through, and a lot of the time it’s not through natural means like old age; it’ll be your toddler son horrifically dying in a car accident.
The types of completely unpredictable deaths that bring no closure whatsoever to them. If this sort of thing helps people move on then I’d say it’s useful.

It won't help them move on though, quite the opposite

sounds like a fantastic tool of manipulation
people are more likely to accept something when it comes from a familiar source
also add that people willing to use these services are clearly unwell mentally

AI necromancy is very real, and in the next couple decades when AI technology really begins to develop and shine, the rich will genuinely be "uploading" their brains to the net to immortalize themselves in history.

I can kinda see it as a very limited-time theraputic tool. But more than that... I'm usually all in favor of escapism, but this sort of thing could get extremely bad for one's mental health quite quickly.
More than parents, I'm expecting people to use these things to pretend their exs are still together with them, and that's inevitably gonna cause problems with the real people who don't want their clingy asses anymore.

    Weird but mostly harmless
Basically just some kind of soothsayer shit but hopefully without lying to you about it being actually their ghost or whatever, some people suck at coping with loss

People using AI to imitate living family members is much more frightening. Imagine those scams that target old people where they send an desperate plea for money to help in an emergency from their grandkid's spoofed email, except now it's actually calling them with a spoofed number and an AI using their voice trained off their ticktock account.
Or you just finish with a kind of weird and short call with your mother about these new products she saw on TV and thought you would be interested in, and then 5 minutes later she calls again but has no memory of that conversation.

    I don't like it.
I feel that this is advanced Jason Voorhees levels of cope.
Once someone dies they should be laid to rest and be left to be in peace.
Now does that mean we shouldn't mourn the dead? No we should still mourn the dead respectfully, this is more of a desecration of the deceased like almost puppeting their corpse and manipulating it to your will.
If this becomes mainstream then society will decay at an even faster rate because people will refuse to let go and let healthy grievance take it's course.

We just need it to get good enough that you can't tell the difference. Especially with people you spent time with mostly on calls and online.

Whatever gives people closure I guess, but you could easily see a dystopian future where people surround themselves with simalcrum of their dead loved ones rather then meeting living people. Then again how much more dystopia is that from the parasocial relationships we have now?

i think this is just as fricked up as that company that makes vr models of people's dead kids and such. fricking crazy shit. if the human races are still alive a hundred years from now, we'll most likely have full-blown robot ai's that walk and talk and behaves just like people's dead kids or parents. and probably looks just like them, too.
