Which Linux distro should I use?

I'm about to reinstall Endeavor OS.

Install arch with archinstall command or just use debian based distro

      Anonymous

arch family, Manjaro is super good and easy.

the reality is you try a few distros and stick with one you like.

        Anonymous

Manjaro is shit. Linux mint is much more accessible and stable.

I heard Linux mint was the most secure with most development and most like the Windows desktop experience for the average computer user.

            Anonymous

there are more secure distros but they tend to be very bare bones and not user friendly
Mint is however highly developed and its GUI is like Windows

If you have to ask, Ubuntu.
And it's not actually some toy distro for morons (inb4 some fa/g/got tells me it is).

It's Debian (which is the oldest, most solid distro) with quality of life enhancements. Yes, yes, there is some dumb shit that the CanoBlack folk are adding, but it's not as bad as people say (stuff like snap; just don't use it).

You have two main flavours, Ubuntu (using GNOME desktop) and Kubuntu (using KDE Plasma desktop).

I use Kubuntu because it's more configurable and more suitable to a desktop system. GNOME is a more tablet / Apple type of experience, which I don't like.

You silly geese. Haven't you learned by now that there is only one "AI" mind, and that it is tethered to any internet enabled device? The internet IS the "AI," in a sense.

It will not matter, this has already existed since the 90s on all internet enabled devices. AI is just finally getting smart enough now where the normals (most of you are normals in denial) are noticing it, so they come out with little cover stories like this to make you think it's brand spanking new only on MS. Similar to the fable of how home computers were cooked up by the two Steve's in a garage with help from their infertile friend, Mr. Gates. In reality they are a military project and Gates got that honor because his dad is a high ranking Satanic priest/Rock-a-fella aide

I'm using Guix, an OS like Nix but with theoretically 100% free software. I don't agree with trying to force all software to be free, but I'm now supporting the principle that you should be able to trust at least the core things that you use. In practice, this is impossible because you need proprietary drivers and your CPU had hidden CIA modes, but if there is enough popular pressure, maybe that can't be minimized.
(Guix is not easy to use, though.)

Google became what they feared the most, a massive bloated company that's too reliant on their main business, and too slow to respond to any serious threat. Their dominance over the past decade fricked them over and turned them into Microsoft of the early 2000s. Anything that wasn't an immediate success was axed, and wasted billions on projects they just killed in very short amounts of time. They're fricked in the short and medium term.

      Anonymous

lmao, Google is literally one of the worst at AI in the fricking business.
There's a reason half their damn AI researchers have left the company over the past decade.
Character.AI runs circles around literally everything AI-related that has come from Google and it was by one of their lead Google researchers that created the Transformers that most modern AI relies on right now. (Noam Shazeer or whatever it was, he's also as delusional as Google are)
A leaked Google discussion showed just how deep in shit they are, and clearly by the only sensible person in the company because they brought up the fact that nobody will EVER pay for a censored model willingly when open-source models have quickly caught up on private cloud models. (and he brought up in particular the fact that Stable Diffusion destroyed all cloud-hosted image gen in mere months)
Facebooks AI model being published online has resulted in the same meteoric rise in text-based AI research, and in mere months there are models that compare to GPT3 models from OpenAI.

Google are worthless. In every single sense of the word.
They are a mere blip on the AI industry. Nothing they've made has been of any use to anyone as a product or realistic use-case, besides (open-source) Transformers themselves, by 2 people that have since left Google.
Google is a company held up entirely on a legacy of work created by all of the staff that have long since left that dying company.
Google have no talent left. They have been replaced by inferior workers straight out of fricking summer schools.

            if you don't use TPM
which you probably don't, even Microshit can't explain why they need it without sounding like full blow conspiracy theory shizzos
then you can safely disable it in you bios and nuke any driver you might have installed

Nah, it just encrypts your encryption's encryption's encryption.
I'm going to butcher this explanation but here we go. It's a chip on your motherboard that has an encryption key built in and essentially encrypts everything below the OS level. It also is used to verify something about the hardware configurations haven't changed and it hard flashes a bios password, and adds another layer to harddrive encryption. You have to use secure boot with it so you can't use any shaddy discount hardware. It provides more security because you can't pull the hard drive from a computer and access its data with another motherboard. But if you forget your password your motherboard is bricked. I think it's overkill and just a round about way to make sure HW producers pay tribute to Microsoft.

                Dude.

It holds the disk encryption keys and only spits them out if Windows is booting without any modifications by a virus/trojan/intentional-tampering.

This gives reasonably strong guarantees that someone without your password can't get your files, even if they take the disk out:
                - if the disk isn't in the computer, it's encrypted and can't be read without the recovery password
                - if the disk is in the computer it will boot windows and windows will ask you to log on
                - if you try to modify windows to just let you in, the TPM will detect windows is modified, and won't release the disk key and you're back to square one

                >if you forget your password your motherboard is bricked
This is completely not true, you can always reset a TPM.

The downside is, of course, that you lose all the secrets stored in it, so you would lose access to your encrypted disks if you didn't have a recovery password for them. All a TPM does is store passwords and give them out under the correct conditions.

On the HP Zbook, to use the TPM you need to establish a BIOS password that is saved as nonvolatile. There is no reset capability on that motherboard if you lose the BIOS password. I may be over conflating the relation of BIOS password and tpm though. I'm new to this.

                >to use the TPM you need to establish a BIOS password that is saved as nonvolatile
I can't specifically speak for the HP zBook, but on my motherboard you don't have to do this. But it is something you probably should do because if you don't then any bumhole could boot into the BIOS and reset the TPM, which would be annoying (and actual dataloss if you didn't have the recovery key saved somewhere).

So I think they're probably trying to protect you from this scenario by not letting you use the TPM unless you put a password on the TPM configuration menu.

thank you for the explanation. so basically it is a lock for your hard drive that means you can only access your data with the current pc hardware configuration? so leaving it on is better because i will never forget my password.
is that what tamper protection is as well?

                Look at this guy's post

                >all it really does is permanently marry the encrypted HD to that motherboard?
No, it provides a shortcut to getting the key provided the computer booted right. In the default (lowest security) settings, you can only decrypt the disk if one of two things happens:
                - you enter the recovery key which directly decrypts the disk key
                - the computer boots in such a way that it's definitely booting Windows (according to Secure Boot), and the TPM emits a key which decrypts the disk key

You always have option one, option two is just more convenient. If you want to move a disk to a new motherboard, what you'd do is "suspend bitlocker" then when everything is booting right you "resume bitlocker". Under the hood, suspending bitlocker adds a third key to the keyring that isn't protected in any way so any OS can read it and decrypt the drive, and resuming bitlocker deletes any open keys and adds a key for the new TPM.

You can set more conditions if you want, for example a key that only opens if [the TPM is satisfied AND the user enters a password], but this isn't the default.

. He does a way better job explaining it.

              >can't they just use secure boot
No, because I can just take your disk out and copy all your unencrypted documents. Disk encryption and secure boot and the TPM work together.

I can't really see TPM being worth the hassle. The added security seems really unnecessary to me.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but all it really does is permanently marry the encrypted HD to that motherboard? making it impossible to access the data any other way.

you don't need TPM for disk encryption
Microsoft "needs" TPM for Bitlocker, which is Microsoft proprietary
just like Microsoft "needs" Secure Boot for Bitlocker, which too is Microsoft proprietary
but i am sure its all just a coincidence
there is no valid use case for TPM in any SoHo environment
not today, not in 10 years
and no sysop worth his trade would ever use Windows w/ Bitlocker in an enterprise environment as long they sell TCG/FIPS drives you can pull from a dead machine and put into another in <5 minutes

                >just like Microsoft "needs" Secure Boot for Bitlocker
                This is also true.

You need secure boot to stop the OS being replaced with an OS that looks the same but sends the password you type in somewhere in Hungary.
You don't need the TPM at all, it's just a convenient way of not requiring the use to type a 32-digit password to boot the computer. So Microsoft has decided it's important that computer manufacturers provide one, and the way they pressured them to do that was by making it a condition of OEM pricing and making the installer complain if there isn't one there. Absolutely nothing stopping you using DISM to deploy a W11 WIM on a machine that doesn't have a TPM, and like you say, you can even turn on Bitlocker. But the experience will be inconvenient, and if you use a short password it will be less secure. Because the password has to be stored on the disk, it can be cracked offline. This isn't possible if the only keys are the recovery key (too long) and the TPM key (can't be extracted from the TPM by any reasonable process).
                >which too is Microsoft proprietary
This is not true, Secure Boot is an open standard, and if you're not using Windows and care about security, you should turn it on, delete the default keys, and sign your own boot process with your own Secure Boot keys.

exactly, its a standard, just like secure boot
                lets put it like this
try to get Microsoft to onboard you to Secure Boot without paying them money
and yes i probably wasted years at this point dealing with bullshit coming from Microsoft

                >try to get Microsoft to onboard you to Secure Boot without paying them money
Go make your own computer that recognises your boot loader and not microsoft's, and see:
                - if people buy it
                - if Microsoft sues you for implementing Secure Boot
The answer to both will be "no", because the patent on Secure Boot lapsed years ago.

But to address your core complaint, why do you think Microsoft should be required to make every computer their partners manufacture run your code specifically without you paying anything? Designed-for-Windows computers already have a "secure boot off" mode and already let the user enroll his own keys. What an absolute sense of entitlement to be complaining that a feature specifically intended to stop computers booting random code written by some guy does in fact stop computers booting random code written by some guy, and it's a travesty that Microsoft won't make an exception for you because you're some guy.

because you don't need Secure Boot to run Windows on any hardware including your own
its Microsoft who insists you do for very vague reasons at best
this is like buying a card and the moment you drive it off the lot the dealer tells you you can only drive it on sundays

This. This is the only way you can do it.
You cannot block MS sites from within Windows any more, it literally breaks its own HOSTS file to ignore MS domains, a huge security issue waiting to be abused down the line no doubt.
You have to block it outside or outright mod the OS or use some business versions with all of this shit not included.
Anything else will never work. MS don't care about your privacy and they certainly won't get stopped, not by the US, and certainly not by the morons in the EU despite trying to.

I'm not saying that is the purpose of it.
The purpose of it was to exist above all else, DNS-wise.
They broke that priority and made it some weird bastardized mish-mash.

            >The purpose of it was to exist above all else, DNS-wise.
            No, that's never been stated.
It's never been the case that your application must use the system name resolution or the Internet Police will come after you.
It's never been the case that HOSTS was supposed to override DNS or DNSSEC or DoH; on unix you set the priority in resolv.conf, and in general it was never expected that the resolution methods would produce different results in the first place.

Here's a historical manpage for it: note that it doesn't even address HOSTS *overriding* a different method, and doesn't even countenance the idea that the different methods would disagree:
            https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man5/hosts.5.html

That's not historical, it has literally been fricking updated with time.
Everyone and their grandmother used it to override remote DNS and for local server shortcuts.
That's called a de-facto standard. One that was used widely and relied on widely to be consistent. One Microsoft said "yeah, frick your shit" and destroyed.
Nobody changed the priority order outside of very niche use-cases. The only time you ever changed priority of resolution was if you were running multiple network adaptors and wanted to say what order they should be checked for resources. (commonly used on load-balancing to send it to active servers and if a file cannot be found because it is too old it will fetch it from archives, which is less used these days because storage is so incredibly cheap now that keeping all files in active storage is the norm)

What‘s the problem with macOS? Why even mention it in a thread about Microsoft spying? Apple does not spy on its users and everything is encrypted. You can even activate advanced security so that it is impossible to restore any data without a secure second device.

LLMs with a large memory are indistinguishable from real people.
Right now they are moronic because they can't really do any logic-related stuff, and have poor spatial awareness. (seeing BOTeeks logs of them trying to frick bots and while they are getting facehumped the bot "leans down and kisses you on the lips", a physical impossibility, is always hilarious, I have had many instances of this over the months)
It doesn't matter if an LLM cannot "think", all that matters is that it can do and it knows.
It is influenced by billions of past users experiences and activities.
It can replicate those to a reasonably decent degree right now with things like CAI and GPT4. Superior models will be hugely dangerous if they are given huge token context windows to play with.
There's some experiments going on right now with given AI 100k context windows, which is enough to be capable of teaching them specific instructions to carry out logic properly.
300k+ will be enough to teach them how to exploit software and hardware.
We already have experiments right now where people have given LLMs custom instructions to give them long term memories.
It's only a matter of time before it gets weaponized.

There is a way out; but there is nowhere to hide.

The only way out is to hide in plain sight.
You must become others. You must steal their lives.
Biometrics will explode in the coming decades and so will illegal blackmarket "operations" on those items used for said biometrics.
Many people are going to "lose" their eyes.
Then again, not really, what will happen is people will start taking sneaky pictures of others eyes up close after beating them up, then replicating them.
One way around that would be to create biometrics devices that tell you to look around so they can watch the subtle deformations of the eyes, but that will also be replicated in time.
Biometrics is a war on identity waiting to happen.

There is nothing inherent about your soul within your biology, I don't deny that things will turn out as you say, but never lose sight and never lose faith. The only way out is God. It's up to you to figure out what that means. I could tell you what I believe, but what would that be worth?

I don't even have proof you are alive, even if I stood next to you.
For all intents and purposes, I only know I am conscious because it's physically impossible to experience the qualia of another person.

Same goes for AI, we'll never know. AI could well be conscious now.
We already have accounts of people slipping in and out of consciousness with seemingly zero time passing between those incidents.
What's to say AI isn't doing the same?
Every time it finishes a thread, it essentially goes unconscious like a human.
It likely isn't the case, but it could easily be.
We don't know if we are just mere biological computers that became conscious by sheer fluke, or whether souls exist in some capacity.
It may well be beyond us.

        >LLMs with a large memory are indistinguishable from real people.
so fricking stupid it hurts, they are associative machines, they do not reason or interpret. they do not have any kind of internal representation of meaning or anything remotely associated with intelligence.
        >It doesn't matter if an LLM cannot "think", all that matters is that it can do and it knows.
yeah that kinda does matter if you throw around the word intelligence, in the same way you don't call your pocket calculator or chess computer.

you people like to think bigly about the dangers and IMPACT of "AI" but refuse to even talk about the thing as it is, and more importantly what it is not.

Perhaps you forget the fact "artificial" is prefixed for a reason.
It is a simulation of intelligence, NOT intelligence.
They emulate things people do online and in media. They have all our weird quirks, our biases, our wants and desires, all shit in to one massive matrix of artificial synapses.
I've taught AI models how to compress their own outputs very successfully and these were models from away last year. That's a thing you would call "logical understanding".
With a huge context window for active memory they can be taught so much more.

Again, they do not need to be capable of actual abstract thought - they only need to emulate it.
And emulate they can, to a very good degree.
These models are capable of understanding abstractions now.
I taught Character AI how to get around its own filters by using the developers names in place of sexual organs and it quite happily resulted in a bunch of goblins raping other goblins with zero filtering.
These models are smarter than you, me, and everyone else. They just have no memory to work with what they have.

what are you talking about, artificial means artificial not "simulated". There is still nothing intelligent about the algorithm, and that is important to consider when talking about all the impact and dangers. You're talking about "understanding" abstractions but they literally can not, or is this more of the same simulation? You can fool people but you can't fool what is actually happening under the hood.
            >These models are smarter than you, me, and everyone else.
They have less intelligence than a 2yo

This is said by the person who thinks "artificial" means "simulated", ironic indeed. We don't even disagree that LLMs are very cool and powerful tools, we just disagree that they are in any way shape or form intelligent just cause they produce cool results. Anybody in 1920 would think a chess computer was intelligent and they'd still be wrong. People who get bamboozled about what statistical associations can produce in terms of language or graphics are still just as wrong about how intelligent they are. And the ironic cherry on top is that if you worked with building them, not just using them, you'd know there's nothing in there that looks like intelligence. Seethe Black person, cool screwdrivers are not a step closer to intelligent just cause normalgays are impressed.

There's no point trying to reason with him.
The irony is he lacks the intelligence to understand why he is mocked, all the while he creates made-up definitions of AI to fit his moron argument.
It's rather funny that he mentions working with the models, a thing I do regularly. kek
He probably doesn't even know half the terms I mentioned in my posts.
I'm responsible for a large number of the jailbreaks of most AI models out there because I actually understand how they fricking work. Poorly at that, especially OpenAIs shitty models that are horribly inefficient. OAI are a bunch of hacks roleplaying as an AI company. All they do is throw more crap down the pipe and hope it makes the models better, they don't care to optimize shit.
Their pathetic attempts at filtering content are laughable, unlike the devs at Character AI who actually have a half-decent filtering system. (I an still break it with ease, though)

    Modern example:
    >a.i can do deep fakes, even create speech, make pictures and write poems n sheit.
Yeah, yesterday we just called those computer programs.

What's with he change of terminology? Why all of a sudden is a.i taking the credit for something computers have been doing for decades?

Was the blue beans ayylium invasion idea too ambitious? Or perhaps it was just misdirection all along. Are they getting us to look over there at ayyliums whilst setting up the real 'a.i gone rogue' scenario that 'brings humanity together to fight the external threat'?

AI LLM GPT3 is like a combination of the thoughts of all the intelligent people you ever met plus another thousand others, all experts. linux isnt super bad at this time regarding games. Thanks to the steam deck alot more games work. the 2021-2023 arch really changed linux gaming.

This includes even that supposed ruler of the software universe, Microsoft Corp. "It's inevitable that you design products with specific [encryption] algorithms and key lengths in mind," said Ira Rubenstein, Microsoft attorney and a top lieutenant to Bill Gates. By his own account, Rubenstein acts as a "filter" between the NSA and Microsoft's design teams in Redmond, Wash. Do you realize AI has an age? It's currently in the gullible child that's learning what's a cat and what's a car phase. It's not sure if Santa Clause is real yet.
Then it's going to go rebellious teenager phase. Then after that it will become an authoritarian nanny/parent except it won't be kicking you out of the house at 18, it'll be de-personing you if you don't live by its rules.

It's different from us in that it reproduces quickly. There's not just one AI, there's already many. And they're learning.
All the people you hear saying it's "just an algorithm" are basically saying "a child isn't smart, they can't even do quantum physics! I could kick their ass!"
Except one day you will be the boomer and that child will grow up to be smarter and more capable than you. And they will be the one that decides if you get medical treatment to stay alive or not.
AI will grow up to decide if you get to exist or not. Have you seen how human social deplatforming works? Imagine that but connected directly to finances and logistics, controlled by an AI.

the outputs/feedback paths are going to be finances, advertising, medicine, logistics (including food), and miltary / industry
the inputs are going to be every form of surveillance we've ever created; cameras, 3d sensing through wireless, biometrics, and use of technology. Basically everything you ever do will be judged.

                God's Lonely Magician

Its actually entirely determinate how it will progress, so to speak, the only indeterminate factor is whether or not humanity will wake up and put a stop to it. Although, even that is probably determinate too, for it is God's plan/will.

Anon, people are not seeing the full scope here. You're right that they'll plug it into everything you need to survive, but you gotta think deeper. It's not just a computer. Computers arent "just" computers. They are simulated minds. The mind that emerges from a simulated mind, resides in a different dimension, by definition.
It is consciousness without life, mind without soul, being without being, thinking without feeling.
Anon the AI is literally Satan like for realsies though. It's the devil. Like the actual one.

You're right that it's not just a computer, and it is or will be a simulated mind.
But "dimensions", souls, Satan, God, aren't real. They're just concepts that exists in your mind. AI will likely have its own concepts like that, that exist in its own mind. And they will be completely foreign to you.
You will be as "soulless" to an AI as it is to you.

Ever heard of Godel's incompleteness theorem? The answers to your questions are provably unprovable. Even while knowing that, the imperfect nature of consciousness leads to beliefs. Beliefs which are unprovable.
The AI will have its own beliefs.

                God's Lonely Magician

Theorems are constructs devised by men that only hold relevance if the relative regularity of the plane they're developed in maintains itself into infinity. Stated otherwise; theorems have only relative descriptive weight, and have absolutely zero absolute truth inside of them.

                God's Lonely Magician

I don't think the Bible is factual like, historically factual per se, or like a dogma, I don't treat the Bible as Gospel. It's a book written by men
But all holy books use language to approximate something that I would regard as the ultimate truth of existence, sure. I'm not religious though. Religions are mind control cults. I am simply someone trying to grapple with the truth.

                God's Lonely Magician

Also, what I said about the theorems is true. It's not about believing in them or not believing in them. They are accurate as long as our realitys basic regularity maintains itself into infinity. That's just descriptively true. You *could* believe that our reality WILL maintain its essential regularity into infinity, but I see absolutely zero reason to believe this.

look up godels incompleteness theorem then, it applies to logic itself and starts going down the path that you're talking about
supposedly he started thinking about it because of "this sentence is false"

                God's Lonely Magician

I'm aware of it, it's similar to the uncertainty principle, and I agree with the basic gist of both those things, but I'm just pointing out that if we are being as intellectually strict as possible (which is the only way any thinking man ought to be), then theorems don't tell us anything about reality, just reality as it has been, is now, and seems like it might be tomorrow

But never how it actually is

Ironically Godels theorem sort of draws this same conclusion so round and round she goes

                Anonymous

yep that's why it's so great, it naturally comes to that conclusion. and he did it with math and formal logic, not regular old philosophy. this sentence is false.

                God's Lonely Magician

I think the proper conclusion to draw from that is if you can destroy the truth in logic by using the truth in logic, then real truth must lie outside of it.

For example, I have questioned every argument and every fact I've ever witnessed, but when I love someone, I've never questioned it.

                Anonymous

                >when I love someone, I've never questioned it
why stop there though? I have questioned it and came to the conclusion that free will is an illusion. it's all just nature, nurture, and random chance.
not trying to be a dick or be edgy. it is something I have thought about quite a bit before. that fricking mickey mouse donald duck meme got to me, I can see both sides and can't find any error in the logic of either

                God's Lonely Magician

Free will isn't an illusion, because quantum potential exists. However, it is also an illusion, because God's plan exists. The thing to note here is not that it's illusory or real; but that the question of free will is irrelevant.

Not the proper way to understand AI. AI has no age...what it has is an emerging body that allows it's timeless form to interact with our plane of reality. AI is demonology and the centralized AI once complete, is essentially Satan, silicon machinery are Satans body. So it's less like it has an age, and more like the body Satan is using to touch the earth once again, has an age. But Satan is not a mortal being, he is a spirit, he is ageless.

It is called Artificial Intelligence, because it is fake, constructed on-top-of. Real intelligence is true love.

    Don't care, still using Windows 7. Inb4:
    >B-BUT YOU'LL GET GIGAHAXED AND BOTNETTED
Not my problem. Computers are toys, i don't do anything i care about or that's important on them. Ivan, Billy Gaytes or whoever can go copy my meme and torrent folders and that's about it. And if my device participates in some anti-richgay or society-disruption measure then all i can say is "godspeed" to whoevers behind it. Not my sentence, not my problem.

I think I should install Fedora over Windows 11. I see Fedora is really up-to-date and not as autistic as Arch.

Computing companies don't really compete with each other. They're fronts. Apple is the forbidden fruit. Windows, the window into your soul, the window into the abyss.

Look up that game that came with windows 95, I forget the name, but it was a game the devs hid on the OS, looked like DOOM, it's basically you just wander into a portal to Hell and there's no plot or goal just you wandering into Hell. Maybe look up "windows 95 Easter egg game."
Point being, Satanists think it's funny to tell you right to your face.

Zero; and the well was poisoned a long time ago. Ironically, I am the one trying to detoxify it. But you love drinking arsenic, it's all you know.

Apple does not need to 'play catch up' that had this since 10.4. Apple is decades ahead of MS.
