Some of them are there because they started out as hobbyists, with a passion for cars, and turned it into a career. Some are engineers who couldn't quite make it at the top end and found a way to apply their skill set to something more practical. Others are just hard working people good with their hands who came from the bottom and trained up the hard way.
Regardless, how many do you think really understand every single aspect of how a car functions, every minute detail of every part? They don't.. They have the ability to look at a car, figure out which part broke, and replace it. To use your terminology, unglue a broken bit, glue in a fixed bit. The REAL work is done producing, designing and manufacturing these parts, but relatively speaking that's a tiny minority of people at the top doing that shit.
