i want to say this is garbage because clearly if you measure brain activity when looking at these pictures and then measure brain activity when thinking about these pictures and then give all the data to a computer of course it can figure out because its just finding patterns in data, and if thats how they did it then its of absolutely zero value because you could be thinking of a different stuffed bear and the computer wouldn't know because it hadn't sampled that before. its like saying shazam could identify a new song you just made up, no it has to be a song in its database.
and then they just shit it through [popular thing of the moment] to churn out a paper for clout.

however, i do remember seeing years ago long before ai was viable, a documentary where they were trying to create pictures of peoples dreams from brain data and they did produce some basic shapes and outlines. but at the same time i could be thinking about a fictional film.
but either wat the ai aspect has no value.

It could help describe things where words otherwise fail. An alternative to police sketches would be a good use-case. Most people don’t have sufficient vocabulary to describe someone’s face precisely, even though they may be able to recall the face clearly in their minds.
Have a bit of imagination, anon

We need a biig biig database for this to even work. Database needs evey face combination possible to be injected into it. So that the computer can do some comparisons

          Anonymous

Plenty of massive datasets of images of faces exist, though. You wouldn’t need every unique face to make it generalizable either, just like you don’t need every individual subject that stable diffusion is capable of genning in its training dataset.

While it is an interesting study, it shows that we don't know at all what the frick the human brain is doing. And this is just the visual cortex. The study is not focused on the rest of the brain, just the visual cortex.
The researchers needed an text-annotated dataset for the "c" variable - which seems to be doing all the work in telling Stable Diffusion what to draw.
The text-annotation is extremely context specific to the study in question, and not applicable out-of-sample. It's one-one mapping of visual cortex data to the text-annotation of the image. This means the output space is literally 1/10,000 pre-labelled text-annotations. Not really impressive. And again, this is doing all the work!
The "z" variable is a representation of the actual raw image data from the brain. And it's pretty dogshit.

But isn't the point of AI generalizing data so it can give you a good guess even if the input isn't in its data base? SD can generate pictures it hasn't been fed, ChatGPT can write text it hasn't seen, so what's stopping AI from interpreting brain data? Obviously it's not perfect, but it can probably give you a decent guess

        Anonymous

        >what's stopping
You need matched brainwave sequences <-> image actually being seen (or whatever else) for this to work. And lots of it, like millions at the bare minimum. Then you need some assumptions, like the process must be consistent, so for example if there's high redundancy in neurons and you can fetch the same memory at random from multiple neurons, you'll probably never end up learning. Or if the signal you collect is not actually what decides how you picture something, then that won't work either.
