Think of an AI that can accurately diagnose you down to the most esoteric problem instead of having to go through the motions of "I don't know what's wrong with you I think you're depressed here's some SSRIs". Or a robotic arm that can minimize healthy tissue collateral damage down to the cell level in surgery.

Unironically yes. 90% of what doctors do is write a prescription for medicine. The intellectual work is encapsulated in the pills.
If an AI can diagnose your symptoms and prescribe the right pills there is no need to spend the money or time to see a doctor.

it's never going to happen. these algorithms are so poor that they can't get information accurate enough because the quality of the data is atrocious. these datasets are constructed by vacuuming up all of the internet with no shit filter. it can't learn anything new, and some of the data in these datasets are already years old rendering them completely fricking useless in many areas of society. great for search engines and meaningless chatter. it's a garbage in -> garbage out process.

AI is in its infancy both in terms of optimization of scaling. Just today Amazon showed off a new multimodal model that outperforms GPT-3.5 on the ScienceQA benchmark despite using 0.42% of the number of parameters. We are at the beginning of the obvious exponential growth phase not the end.

Doctors don't know what's wrong with you and neither will a machine. You might trust it more though.

The average doctor completely incompetent. Studies have proven that even lay people with big list diseases and possible symptoms are more accurate at diagnosis than doctors. Large egos destroy people's ability for critical thinking.

The impressive part about that isn't the amount of parameters he listed. There has been similar sized models get slightly worse than 3.5. the impressive part is the gap between the old record and the new 75% to 91%

With all of these chatbots moving as fast as possible to replace as many jobs as quickly as possible, why even go to college? Might as well just ship off to the army or go to trade school.

      Anonymous

the next step seems to be personalized tutors for each student. teaching has a grade system out of necessity, students all get taught at the same rate and move up a level each year because that's the best way to do it when you have one teacher per 30 kids.
with AI assisted learning it seems to me that a student can learn at their own rate, instead of moving up each year they can move up at the rate they learn individually, whether that takes a year, 6 weeks or 3 years.

The essay is just means to an end here to get you to read stuff that you would otherwise never have cared about. I'm happy this exists tho. Maybe this will finally make schools obsolete and will make us think about a new system to select for competence that isn't as easy to game like tests and grades and stuff in school.
