    How does it help?
All the formulas fit on like one page and you just do the odd problems and check your answers until you tend to get them right.

I want to use it to explain stuff i don't understand.

how is that a bad thing? You'd be fricking yourself over if you had it solve the examples for you, not by asking it what you did wrong or don't understand

        >memorize them
Most professors don't have you memorize calculus formulas for tests. The most I had to remember were the ones from trig/geometry. He even gave us the formulas for volume so all I had to remember were the ones for area. Just focus on memorizing all the derivative rules.

          Anonymous

My calculus professor always gave formulas for lesser stuff like trig identities (for integration), coordinate systems, Jacobian matrix, sometimes derivative rules or integration by parts, etc. The tests were still challenging if you didn't study because you had to know when, how, and why to apply the formulas and theorems.

I don't know about calculus but it gets simple probability theory stuff wrong all the time. Which is kind of ironic.

I use it sometimes to help me explain some stuff cuz I can always ask questions for further details. Today I tried to derive a differential equation out of a circuit. It was complete shit at that though

yes, because you aren't learning. It's like having your class mate next to you telling you all the right stuff.

Not if you are asking for clarifications on concepts or parts of the text. It's not the same as asking for answers to problems.

I am certain someone with GPT-4 commercial access is already working on an AI tutor, the potential is immense

I got 2 guys in my class who are doing everything with chatgpt and when the tutor asks them something they don't know shit. It's just my observation, you aren't learning with it.

It depends on how you use the tool.

I'm a developer with several years of experience and it helps me in many varied ways. I don't use it as a copy-paste source but rather a way to help me remember things. There is too much you have to know in this field, so this tool is godly for that.

I asked it for a proof before and that was the first line it gave me, so not a reliable source at all.
Just watch 3b1b series to form a good intuition, then read a book to have deeper understanding. You can use it as a secondary source, but trust it as much you trust your snobby friend who likes to like to appear knowledgeable of everything.

  15. 1 year ago

Yes, horrible idea since it doesn't know anything at all either.
You will never learn calculus by reading words. Bla bla bla, nobody ever learned anything by hearing or reading words.
Just pirate Howard Anton book and do all the exercises. Then you think about it, once you understand what a function is, and what a derivative is, you can pretty much derive from this simple concepts everything else. Everyone that has understood calculus went through this process. The book will help you with techniques and common problems, bit you can only appreciate the solutions proposed once you reached the problem yourself. You cannot understand calculus wince it is a technique, you master the technique to try to understand the world around you.
Chatgpt is useless since it will never ever understand one thing at all, it just can apply technique know to solve a problem.
Chatgpt will never have an original insight and you never had one

    >Is using chatGPT to help me learn calculus a bad idea?
Of course it's le bad idea! Calculus is useless to humans in a world of AI, you shouldn't bother learning it, let alone bother doing anything for the rest of your life, let the AI do all the work - humans time is up! Adapt to change or be swept away bro! Just adapt bro! Adapt to everything you can do being redundant to a machine that can't even solve basic logic problems without looking up a known answer!

It's great at generating test questions, but there will be times where the answers it provides are wrong.

      Output:

      Solve for x: 2x + 5 = 11
      a) x = 3
      b) x = 6
      c) x = 8
      d) x = 10

      Solve for y: 3y - 7 = 11
      a) y = 6
      b) y = 6/3
      c) y = 6/2
      d) y = 6/4

      Solve for z: 5z + 3 = 28 - 2z
      a) z = 4
      b) z = 5
      c) z = 6
      d) z = 7

      Solve for x: 4x - 6 = 2x + 14
      a) x = 5
      b) x = 7
      c) x = 9
      d) x = 11

      Solve for y: 6y - 3 = 9y + 12
      a) y = -5
      b) y = -3
      c) y = -2
      d) y = -1

As long as it's not a proof based course it does decently well at explaining the main intuitions and ideas. But it gets things wrong quite a bit for logical arguments and often subtly wrong. Tried it for my functional analysis book.

Maybe it could work for calculus, but for anything even slightly "obscure" it's worth less than shit.

You aren't going to get around studying for math. But once you learn how to study acing classes is the easiest thing.
The easiest way is to just prove every theorem and solve every problem in the book. Eventually you will be able to do all the problems (including challenge/word/coding problems and proving theorems) in the time your classmates are doing just the doing the even basic ones.

No, but check your understanding against other sources like actual textbooks so you don't end up thinking a load of made up BS.

So how you are you going to understand how and when to apply it?
If you are going to use this approach then it's better to just wait until the AI can do everything

Personal opinion based on what I use it for during programming time, if you don't think you know enough yourself to be able to redirect it and revise answers when it fricks up, you shouldn't attempt serious use
