IIRC robot doctors are already BETTER at diagnosis than humans. It's because they can "remember" so much more information.

Robot x-ray examiners are better than humans for similar reasons. An X-ray specialist might have looked at a few thousand X-rays in their career. An AI can look at tens of thousands of X-rays, remember all of them with crystal clarity, and it never retires, so in 200 or 300 years you could theoretically have the same AI still looking at X-rays, with its experience somewhere in the millions.

Absolutely. Not everyone can be a plumber. There's only so much plumbing to do. And even plumbing could, theoretically, get automated at some far point in the future. There's no escape from this crucible that is coming for humanity, and we're not going to get through it by trying to maintain status quo. Status quo is leaving, our only choice is what we do about it. Currently we're pretending it isn't happening.

My brother in Christ, they've been talking about truckers being out of the job in 10 years for the past 25 years, at least. Even if the tech was there, which is most certainly isn't and never will be, insurance companies would never sign off on insuring a legit self driving truck. It's the biggest, most obvious load of bullshit I've ever come across, it's insulting.

        Anonymous

It's impossible until it isn't. And I guarantee that paperwork problems like insurance will get solved in short order when there is billions to be made.

It can certainly be done, but end to end automation is an enormous undertaking.
You'd basically have to standardize the entire logistics chain. There are aspects within it that can be partially automated, like moving a box from point a to point b, but everything before a and after b still has to have input and output which is prohibitively complicated.
Particularly if your warehouse deals in non standard goods which differ in size shape weight and transportation method.
Food distribution hubs for example. Every order is different, every pallet is different. You can automate shit like shrink wrapping and moving inbound/outbound finished pallets around within the warehouse. But sorting and picking is a b***h for a robot.

        >You'd basically have to standardize the entire logistics chain.
Look around you dude, Bezos is in the process of doing exactly that. Why is standardization hard to believe in?

These kinds of objections come up in every discussion about automation, and it's always along the lines of
        >But right now [insert business] is really reliant on individual human input and compensation for varying factors, how could that ever be different?
By doing like Amazon and changing the warehouse to suit the bot. For any particular business, the reason it's not automated already is because nobody has conceptualized exactly how to automate it...yet. But there's obviously more automation today than there was in 1980, 1920 or 1560 AD, why would we be confident that any particular thing is totally immune to this overarching pattern? Who would ever have thought, prior to this past year, that things like artwork could be automated? Yet here we all are posting AI-drawn waifus. And we can also look back to the past to see the loss of manufacturing that was partly offshoring and mostly automation. You don't have to eliminate every human at the factory to create a crisis. During the Great Depression, only 1 in 4 working-age Americans was unemployed. Just that was enough to ruin everything. If 1 out of 4 working-age Americans is replaced by automation, you're in a Great Depression. If half get replaced, you're in a double Great Depression. It doesn't take much to ruin the society.

And this is all without considering the white collar jobs that you can't even raise physical equipment objections on. That's just a computer program learning to make and read spreadsheets.

At the very least you have to admit it's a huge risk, even if you somehow remain convinced it can't be that bad, and nobody is doing anything to address it.

Truckergay here Anon. My friend worked for a megacarrier called Crete Carrier not a bad company to work for and has really nice equipment. Well he knew I guy how was assigned one of the few "self driving" driving trucks in the fleet. He said one day this guy had it on whatever cruise driverless mode it had and decided to get up from the driver's seat and grab an energy drink from his mini mfridge only for the truck to immediately steer off the road , jacknife, and flip over on the shoulder. Long story short the driver gone fired and the technology just isn't there and doesn't stand a chance against the monolithic barrier of trial lawyers who make a living off of commercial vehicle accidents. Plus the sensors can't detect smaller road debris still capable of causing catastrophic accidents. The tech is just not there. From what I can can see you'll have big companies like Walmart or Amazon who might experiment w/ it but that's it—The megacarriers are at least a few decades aways from ever considering it and are hurting like never before to get new driver's

I never claimed trucking is automated already. Your implicit argument is that it can't ever be automated because of your anecdote. My argument is that just because the Teslas in 2015 couldn't drive on their own, doesn't mean the ones in 2023 can't. It shouldn't need stating really, but technology progresses and improves. Do you want to type into your computer that you don't believe that to be true just to win this internet argument?

the trick is to have a job that is both simple yet complicated enough that building a robot to do it would not be worth the effort.

            >“When all the world is overcharged with inhabitants, then the last remedy of all is war, which provideth for every man, by victory or death.”

I dont see AI being a problem in first world nations. Maybe in shit-holes like china. But it's basically the same thing as the great manufacturing relocation. Heavy industry bailed on the US and sure, a few areas got hit hard. But for the most part everyone is fine.

While AI does mean less jobs it also means less costs and higher productivity. So while I might not be able to make 60k a year working on an assembly line, I also wont have to subsidize the wages of the workers who build the shit I buy and my quality of life will continue to go up.

The bottom tier of society should probably be panicking. But nobody with a 1st world flag should be worried about that.

      >Like warehouse work.
This is closer to getting automated than a lot of other things. The thing with warehouse work is that it's repetitious and predictable, and can be done in a very controlled environment. It's actually improved by a robot which will more reliably put the box where it's supposed to be than a human. Part of what makes something like plumbing more AI-proof is that it happens in people's houses, which come in a wide variety of styles and are not controllable. That multiplies the potential situations the AI has to deal with by a great deal, which makes the AI more expensive. A warehouse you can put on a grid.

as the technology becomes more widespread, the cost to implement will plummet, especially when AI can write all of the software itself. The physical machinery will have a higher ROI than a human

        Anonymous

yeah but that is way waaayy waaaaaayyyyy far away in the future.
The capability of robots is highly overstated. They are good at performing predictable standardized repetitive tasks and not much else. And even then they crash constantly and must be monitored by operators.
They're great working as "assistants" but not really as independent workers. Where once it took 4 people to run an assembly line now it takes 1 person to monitor 2 largely automated assembly lines. But everything scales up, more production, less overhead, more lines, more output, cheaper goods.

          >Where once it took 4 people to run an assembly line now it takes 1 person to monitor 2 largely automated assembly lines.

They had to change the entire assembly rig to get that done. We could do that right now without AI and replace plumber, drivers etc. We would just have to rebuild our roads and plumbing infrastructure so that a machine could do it. It's easier for small scale stuff, like assembly, but for entire cities to replace the workforce with machines, at that point it would be cheaper in the long run to rebuild the whole city from scratch.

The highways don't have to get rebuilt to allow robots. Tesla autopilots are 8 years old now, the full self-drive 3 years old. For 3 years now there have been Teslas driving around on their own, with existing infrastructure, nothing special built for them. I don't think that should be surprising, because road infrastructure already has rules of transit built into it for the humans driving on it. You know that you can go through the intersection because the light is green. The robot can know that the same way. As soon as a robot can see things and read them it can drive, since that's how humans drive, by looking around and knowing the rules.

But anyway, there's no reason to drill down further into automated trucking specifically. The overarching point is that even if you say they had to change a lot to automate the assembly line...they did it, didn't they? Even though it was a huge effort and they already had humans to do the work? So what is going to stop that from happening long term to absolutely everything?

You missed the point. Walking robots have to take into account carrying terrain. If we rebuild our cities with robots in mind we wouldn't need AI.

You always need humans to validate AI’s work. The question is how much you’ll earn for only doing the validating and not the work itself

  28. 11 months ago

No. AI will, eventually, be able to do anything a human can do. AIs will eventually become more intelligent than the most intelligent biological that could ever theoretically exist.

Lawyer, Doctor. People need human contact for those professions. even machines able to do surgery need a human driver.

Pilots. There is literally no way that 300 people will be let to fly alone without a pilot in the wienerpit in the next 100-200 years. 1000 years in the future even the most advanced space ship will still need a pilot or commander.

Trains. I don't see trains dropping human drivers or controllers any time soon.

School isn't really about learning it's about learning to learn and social interactions with others. Some pick up the former faster, some the latter. Some never pick up either. A teacher facilitates this and I guess you could have LLM Bot but weirdly as COVID sort of exposed kids like being interacted with by their peers and the structure and discipline offered by a real human.

Police officer. It'll be supplemented by technology such as tracking and surveillance, but crime will always happen. It'll have to be a city that does actually want to stop crime though. Lol.

any complex manual labor involving fine motor skills or interacting with nature/animals/kids really. Live music might not be safe as I'm sure it's fairly easy to program animatronic stuff on a flat stage, but who knows.
For robots to take some of these jobs we will have to completely rethink kitchen and garden design and it'll probably be more expensive than it's worth, at least for quite a while. And childcare, you can forget about it. People (at least white people) will not leave their children with robots at least until they're so good it's impossible to tell they're a robot.

No, but some are clearly more resistant than others. Truck driving is one of them. Even with all the massive investment we are not close. Whearas writing/art are done just as a byproduct of training AI.

      >Whearas writing/art are done just as a byproduct of training AI

      *entertainment/goyslop.

The "AI" can write something like Captain America 6 - The Rise of Muttnited States. But "AI" can't

      >be funny (not just in le random shit way but actually construct jokes that arise from the narrative and really land)
      >make accurate observations about the human existence & experience
      >OFFEND (because muh feelings)

Therefore "AI" can't write films and shows like American Beauty, Mad Men, Joker, The Passion of the Christ, American Sniper, The Sopranos, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Juno, White Lotus, A Clockwork Orange, Last Tango in Paris, Straw Dogs, Life of Brian, Cruising, The Exorcist, Kids, Pulp Fiction, Antichrist, Nymphomaniac, Ken Park, High Plains Drifter, Basic Instinct, The Wild Bunch...

[I'm using "AI" very loosely because at this point we are only talking about language models that are not intelligent in any way or form]

High level engineering since it benefits so much from advanced AI.

Every job will eventually get replaced by an AI+Robot in our lifetime. Some just earlier than others.

HR and Reception, because they'd always want to let women have an easy life while men bust their asses. No cushy jobs for men.

silicon valley HR depts got absolutely gutted, the job is eminently automatable, Uber drivers were already being hired/fired by algorithm

If this truck is "fully automated", wouldn't it be more practical to just load a shipping container onto it? Or does it slide inside?

Manual labor would be the last one replaced since it would take longer to make physical robots that actually have the manipulation level of a human(at a reasonable price)
