It's not, the AI would have to understand the reason the code needs to exist and specify what it needs to do. In my experience just figuring out WHAT my code needs to do is way more work than the actual act of writing it.

As soon as programming AIs get good enough, companies will start using them in place of most of their human programmers, so if you plan to get hired by a company to work on their code, you may not have much time.
But if you want to work on your own project, then this is great news, as it will speed up your work and make more ambitious projects a more realistic possibility for you (or your team), your budget, etc.
I see the industry moving in this direction in the next 10 to 20 years, where hordes of newly jobless programmers and idea guys just flood the market with bullshit little programs and the companies who need programmers for their projects and internal systems will take the top 0.01% (plus a few diversity hires) to program with the help of AIs.

Honestly I can't wait for AIs that can code, this will purge the software community, right now people feel much smarter than they are and spout shit like that and it's the reason why every other engineering fields consider us to be moronic. Companies are still struggling to get automated testing to work for anything that isn't dirt simple, what makes you think we're anywhere near the point where an AI can write an entire codebase

      Anonymous

People have this odd misconception that AI is some sort of android that comes to sit on your seat and does everything from zero.

Automation isn't like that. Automation is a chainsaw; it helps an expert getting a job done quicker, meaning less of them are needed for a given task, meaning the demand goes down. That also means the price goes down, which means new projects are now viable where they didn't use to, and supply will meet an equilibrium at some new point.

proper coding requires general intelligence. all AIs so far are only for special use cases and general AI is still very far away.

Problem is with the word general. You can't have a general algorithm that can consistently answer an arbitrary question correctly.

You can have a scoped algorithm that can give a satisfying enough answer in it's specific circumstances, but that is no longer general.

What marketing today tends to call "general" AI is just several single-purpose statistical tools. That doesen't make it any more general, it just answers several questions in those several predefined areas.

If co-pilot and shit are good enough to write production ready code, then there is no reason other pencil pusher jobs can't be immediately replaced by AI as well. So I would expect for things like accounting, risk management, banking, etc., to all be replaced around the same time, and if that happens we're looking at mass layoffs of people who are typically some of the highest wage earners in the country. It would either cripple our economy and throw us into nightmare level depression like we've never seen before, or would force the government to begin some sort of universal income.

While I think that situation is inevitable, I would like to think that is at least a few decades away. So in the meantime I wouldn't think about it. When the AI replacement happens it's going to be a complete fricking hell ride nobody can prepare for. If it somehow doesn't play out as an apocalyptic fever dream and we all get UBI, then it doesn't matter anyway.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, learn to code or don't. The AI is coming and either way your choices in employment will not matter. Do what you want.

The bullshit you made hunts you back.
First phase you contributed to open source, that made the pajeets from Pajjetlandia to be equal with the developers from the 1st word, because they start from the same code that is public - so not first word advantage anymore.
2 phase of stupidity - you contributed to open source providing a lot of code for training the AI. Now with so much code available the machine learning will replace you.
Conclusion: the developers are the stupidest humans ever born on this earth - they give their work for free to the third word and to machine learning to make possible to replace them.

      Anonymous

open source == open death (for developers)
Our trade should be paid not free for third world (to compete from an equal level) and for training AI (for generating automatic coding).
The less software is open sourced, the less are the chances that AI will be able to replace the developers from that software niche.
