the point is not to appreciate the arrangement of pixels on the screen but the amount of work and soul that went into it, which AI lacks

You appreciate hand made things because they often have a level of detail and quality that is missing in what is made by machines. For example, a hand made suit has objective benefits over off the rack. In the case of art, there's nothing objectively better except sentimentality.

Most artists on twitter who would be losing their 'jobs' from AI actually don't put significant heart into their drawings. They draw the subject based on commission and shit out sometimes multiple drawings a day. When it comes to artists like this, who are the majority of people complaining about AI art, I don't think there's much, if any at all, value in the 'humanity' or 'soul' of their work.

this; if anything, AI art will weed out the people who don't take art seriously. just as will happen in every other field of human endeavor. it will force people to become highly conversant in the technical language, which requires dedicated learning. and i'm very much looking forward to this.

The frick are you talking about. Real art means the human element that made it. Without it it's not art. Simple as.

Nobody is claiming to be superior over people who use the AI to make pictures. But it's not art. It can be a pretty picture. But it's not art and will never have the same qualities to it as real art does. And the person who prompted it is not an artist.

Just like if you pay for a factory to produce you a table you aren't a real carpenter

by your shoddy definition, a director is not an artist because he's not sculpting props or acting in the movie he's making and a grizzled veteran isn't a warrior because he used a modern selective-fire rifle rather than a claymore on the battlefield
your desperate shrieking about donning krooger and iq is hilarious and only shows how little confidence you actually have regarding this matter

                Anonymous

                That's so fricking moronic.
Director has a vision and he creates it. In that case his actors and team can be viewed similarly to art utensils which he controls and uses to create his art.
He himself directs others to create exactly what he wants. He needs the charisma, vision, leadership and experience. That's the skill of directing. And that takes A LOT of effort and passion. If he would just open an AI and say "I want an action film that has this and that" and let the AI create the film then he would not be an artist and that would not be art. Because art is about the human making an EFFORT and putting a lot of work into it.

Just thinking of something doesn't make you an artist. You have to put your own effort into expressing it. And no that does not mean typing something into a prompt box. If you just think of a drawing of a girl, you aren't an artist.

Soulful art is when someone puts effort and heart in order to create and bring to life something they envisioned. And no typing a bunch of words into a prompt box does not make it soulful. Because there is absolutely 0 effort.

people say the same thing about hand crafted artisan furniture, but who wants to pay $900 for a fricking chair when you can go down to Walmart and get an identical one for $15? Whats happening is the exact same thing thats happening to carpenters at the start of the industrial revolution, and sure there were tons of strikes and whining by carpenters but after 20 years of industrialisation people just stopped caring, as its by far a net positive to society for every single person to be able to afford a chair.

              >comparing art to furniture
How much of an NPC are you

A chair's only purpose is to sit on it. So it makes sense that you can get the cheaper one as long as it does its job.
Art serves no purpose other than emotional enjoyment of others who look at it, because humans like and appreciate people expressing themselves and putting their heart into it.

And yes, if I saw a handmade chair made by someone who had a passion and heart for it, I would appreciate its beauty, and I would find more emotional value in that chair over the one that was assembled by a machine.
But that doesn't mean I'm going to pay 10 times more for the handmade chair if the factory made one does its job just as good

But when it comes to art there is no fricking purpose similar to sitting on a chair. The very meaning of art is humans expressing themselves. If there's no human heart in art, that's the same as a chair that you can't sit on. It's worthless.

Every take they have underlines the fact they don't understand art on a deep, deep level, like a part of their humanity was stripped off years ago, so now they genuinely don't understand why people prefer human-made images.

I think it's going to let me explore more possibilities in art and take it to levels I couldn't have before, I'm very excited at the potential to manifest your ideas.

      How?

Are you going to generate an image and then trace over it?
Or use it as a reference?

The fun part about art is you create something in your head and bring that to life. If you're just copying every single image the AI shat out, you're just a line monkey.

well I'm not in visual art first of all, I'm personally excited about it's application in music production. It would be really awesome to have an AI that could say, record dynamic drum beats, basically like a virtual session musician. It would let me explore a lot of sounds that would otherwise be difficult for me to produce alone.

Visual art is a bit tricky I'll admit, but visual artists to be fair have always been at the mercy of the times, there was fear photography would replace traditional paintings for example. But I think even if visual artists suffer, other fields will thrive. Video game development, movie making, music, basically the potential of anything multi-media will be hugely improved by these tools.

the SOVL comes from the fact a human being put time and energy into it
plus AI is made by man

I'm not even an "art-guy" but AI-generated art is just not interesting, no matter how technically impressive or "pretty" it is. Pic related is supposed to be a depiction of a scene from my favorite fantasy series. But it's completely uninteresting to me because there's no meaning or intentionality behind any of elements. The relief sculpture and architecture doesn't have any significance or deeper meaning, the characters and their silhouettes have no significance or intentionality behind their clothing. Sure it's "pretty", but it just does nothing for me.

That's not the point. Sure, if you're looking at is as jus a random generic painting, it looks fine. But if you want to engage with the painting and are familiar with the scene being depicted, it just rings hollow. There is unironically there's no sovl. There's no meaning.

The thing is most art is intended to just look pretty without having any deeper meaning.
