Apple repackages the innovation of others into shiny gadgets and marks up the price by 500%. And dumb suckers still buy it.

Creating something like gpt-4 requires brains, research and innovation, which Apple will never have.

that's right. they never evolve. same products released over and over again with incremental updates for the last.. 14 or 15 years? such trail blazing pioneers with their ~20% share of the computer market. my sides.

    >Speaking to the New York Times, former Apple engineer John Burkey, who worked on Siri and was made responsible for improving it in 2014, explained that the voice assistant is built on "clunky code that took weeks to update with basic features."

    >Its "cumbersome design" made it very difficult for engineers to add new features. For example, Siri's database contains a large list of phrases in almost two dozen languages, making it "one big snowball." If someone wanted to add a word to Siri's database, Burkey added, "it goes in one big pile."

    >This means that simple updates like adding new phrases to the data set requires rebuilding the entire Siri database, which could take up to six weeks. Adding more complicated features like new search tools could take up to a whole year.

Siri is such a badly designed piece of shit, it takes an ENTIRE YEAR to add a tiny new feature.

chatgpt isn't much better. the data in it is far too old to be of any practical realtime use. it's nothing more than a glorified and out of date search engine that's constantly wrong.

never did any such thing. they've never invented a single thing in their existence that changed anything. even their first computer was a 100% rip-off of don lancaster's teletypewriter, and someone managed to get him to work with apple.

Its only use is writing essays for students, it's pretty good at that to be fair.

it has the english skills of a 12yo that's copy/pasted chunks of wikipedia but worded it differently so it doesn't look like it's cheating. who does this shit fool and impress exactly? brain damaged morons that lick windows, wear helmets and ride on special buses?

When Siri was first introduced it would actually answer a lot of questions for you, speak aloud actual answers, showing some real compute was going on behind the scene. Now almost everything is offloaded to a web search which is useless 99% of the time.
I bet Apple had too much overhead for the number of customers trying to use Siri so they crippled its capabilities.

How did Apple fall so far behind in the AI race?

A problem with charismatic leaders. They demand blind obedience so any contrarian or competitive views leave. When that head is gone you're left with directionless yes men and bean counters incapable of innovation.

Though I think the same could be said about Microsoft after Bill Gates. The failure of Windows phones, degradation of Windows desktop, snail pace development of Windows ARM, and the segment I'm most disappointed in is failure to merge Xbox with desktop which was Bill Gates original vision.

This is the stupidest take yet one that's so prevalent in society right now. Why do people take the work of literally thousands of people and then just say "That was Bill Gates", "That was Elon Musk, etc. It's a variety of factors across organisations of thousands of people. Naturally some are going to pull ahead and some are going to pull behind for a variety of reasons. The only dividing factor here is that people start to actually believe this 'leadership' cult, and then it become self-fulfilling prophecy.

You're moronic if you think that Jobs demanded blind obedience. He hired the best experts of the industry and still told them their ideas are shit to challenge them and squeeze the best out of them.

The data is king in AI. Perhaps Apple doesn't want to train on the data of people who didn't agree to that like openai did. Imagine you worked on some open source project for years you didn't make money directly from that but you got some tribute which increased your hireability, personal brand and maybe some donations from Patreon. Now your code is used to train chatgpt. Chatgpt spits out the code that it learned from your hard work. It never references you. Moreover Microsoft makes money from your hard work meanwhile you are getting laid off. When it really starts impacting jobs. This shit will surface

Siri still gets activated when no one even mentions the word "Siri".
Just talking about some technology stuff and suddenly Siri pipes up, "I have found these articles about ~ for you".
