Exactly. I try to always tell people there is nothing wrong with capitalism because capitalism is not a system. It is the absence of a system. It is people doing whatever they would naturally do. If it fails its because of the choice of individuals. It's like constantly arguing over distros. I mean look at South America, so many socialist countries that were nightmares because of corruption and greed.

          Anonymous

No. Capitalism is not the absence of a system, I appreciate the effort you've put into thinking by yourself but it's time you open up a book.

First of all, I'm going to go on a limb here but I imagine when you think of what socialism is you imagine it's "when the state does stuff" which is a thoroughly wrong view. Of course, the state owning the means of production and the state being comprised of workers could be interpreted as the workers therefore owning the means of production. But this vision skips over one of the fundamental critiques of the capital system: hierarchical top down ownership leads to unequal power.

Corruption is as you say a feature of human nature, I completely agree with this view but as Machiavelli put it, we need the proper structures and regulations to stop people from taking advantage of the system. Now, when you bring this critique to businesses the main point that stands out is that a structure that replicates monarchic hierarchies will be a breeding ground for corruption and inefficiencies. When marx explores the idea of workers owning the means of production a large part of it has to do with this critique of unequal decision making. In my opinion, it is much harder for corruption to thrive when power is decentralised, now, it's not a panacea and you still need the appropriate structures and regulations but to think this way you're challenging the notion of "I funded the business and therefore it is mine", commonly known as the idea of private property.

I don't have many more words buy the next thing to explore would be the profit motive and competition, also integral parts to a capitalist mode of production and a huge part on why decentralised capitalist structures (publicly traded companies) end up doing things that harm society instead of improving it.

Anyway, I don't know what kind of people you talk to but they're probably dumb as frick if they accept your arguments as you've lined them out here.

Artists don't need to hide their techniques.
What they did is often plain to see, and easy to emulate for another artist of similar skill.
Real art is the process of creating that original work which grabs attention, and isn't something that can be stolen.

      >Real art is the process of creating that original work which grabs attention

      This.

It's rare to have that kind of skill and understanding in how to create art that captivates. Copycats and 'routine' artists (i.e. they learn a workflow and keep doing that to sell their art for a living) won't be able to make captivating art.

Just because someone is enthralled by your art doesn't mean you actually made good art.

In the music industry we call it "overproduction".
I can already tell that these sdg images are basically the equivalent of a bad track overproduced. Dumb people might like it, but for a trained ear it's nails on chalkboard.

But, overproduction can be exploitable as a new wave of musical style too.

            Anonymous

            I think that's a good metaphor.
These AI-generated images may look good at first blush, but the longer you pay attention the more disgusting they become.
I think the obvious counterargument is "but the AI is only going to get better", and that's true, but I'm only going to get better at spotting flaws. The first time I saw an AI image it took me about 2 minutes to see the cracks. Now it takes me a few seconds. A person who grows up in a world where AI art is common may be able to do it instantly.
I also agree that it's a valuable tool if used intelligently. It's ideal for doing something like making art for a horror game where being vaguely unsettling is the first line on the design doc.

What do you see? The only things I can see are:
              >that if you don't explicitly dictate the prompt to make good hands or anatomy, they become garbled monstrosities.
              >If you don't put in an artist, the quality of the image becomes noticeably worse because the AI has less information to work into the image.

      Not likely.
Much of "prompt crafting" is trying to work around the dated CLIP model's idiosyncrasies.
A lot of it is using a crystal ball to figure out the labeling for the source material dataset.
The rest of it is discovering artists and abusing prompt editing for unique effects.

As it goes, there is no better way to generate an image than to use a thousand words.

        Anonymous

        >As it goes, there is no better way to generate an image than to use a thousand words.
Once someone figures out a way to make the models default to good-looking, coherent images you would end up getting good art even without any prompting at all. Prompts would only be needed to steer towards a specific outcome rather than poking the model towards making something pleasant.

The "trending on artstation, 4k" thing could just be turned into a slider that tweaks the "details" and "quality" neurons directly once they have been identified.

          Anonymous

          >Once someone figures out a way to make the models default to good-looking, coherent images
You just need more data and a larger model, it's not complicated.
          >without any prompting at all
Not true. The models will always have edge cases due to limitations in human expression and excessive restrictions.

For example, if you prompt, "Jessica" all by itself, you are pretty much guaranteed to get something that looks good.
Every token you use is another restriction on the model, an entire set of possibilities cut off. The more restrictive the model, the more artifacts you will have.
Good luck generating "A green-haired woman juggling bottles of champagne while balancing on a ball, inside of an office building."

imagine having the ego of an artist but not the skill. how pathetic.

Yea it’s a joke. This whole thing is a shitshow. Artists deny it even working, which it clearly does. people steal talent from artists, then people insist it’s not stealing from the artists because it’s technically not the same. then they take pride in their creations as if they were entirely original works. Suddenly they have a sense of ownership and find themselves in the position of the artist who doesn’t want to share except they didn’t have to do anything lol. The whole thing is pretty funny to watch, I can’t stop thinking about the chad who decided to make this open source free to use for all. Truly a one off experience. It’s nice to see something completely implausible happening that’s actually fun. The circus continues

The tricks that people figured out on the prompts of course make what is produced better, and so do open sauce contributions to models, webui, the engine, model merging and so on.

Anon, altruism is not a thing.

Everyone always does things in their own interest. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're selfish. Providing a service for someone for compensation technically is also 'in your own interest'. In fact, just doing something for someone else without anything in return is pretty inefficient or exploitable.

      >industry
Given current technology? Several years, industry moves slowly and the software still isn't idiot-proof.
Given technological progress in the next few months? Hard to predict, but at a minimum it'll make artists that pick up new tools a lot faster, allowing one person to do the work of 10.

I hope someone will build something that'll help animators to crank out more frames per hour while maintaining a consistent style. That way anime production will need less labor and become more scalable.

      Anonymous

the ai is still struggling with hands, feet and faces
a lot of the examples you see are people who have upscaled the image and painted over the mistakes and imperfections.
also it cannot generate high res images yet and the higher res you go the more obvious little mistakes become.
it'll be a while, if ever. there's quite a few unsolved problems in AI generated compositions that end up making it cheaper to just hire an artist than some sweaty gormless technbro.

      Anonymous

Five years max but in the next year or so you are going to see heavy pressure being put on artists as people figure out how to be consistant with generating art. If you are creating some generic, gacha fantasy video game then AI generated art would be perfect for that use case.

What is never brought up in these discussions is what insufferable c**ts graphic designers/artists are and how many people would rather have a substandard product (AI generated art) then actually work with one of these people.

because they're fricking homosexuals, that's why. it's pathetic as shit that all of these people are going out of their way to make fun of shitty tumblr/twitter artists because they're being replaced, and then IMMEDIATELY turned around and started acting like pretentious art snobs. like, don't get me wrong; i certainly do believe that AI art is art, and i also think it's funny that twitter "artists" are getting buttblasted, it's just lame to see the people who are replacing them take on all the exact same snobbery and bullshit that made the tumblr and twitter art world so fricking insufferable in the first place.

my grandfather was a fairly famous artist, so i was exposed to quite a bit of the art world since childhood, and one thing that's very, VERY different from the "high-art" circles and the people who post on twitter is that internationally renowned artists all love sharing their techniques, teaching, writing, and helping people understand how to make better art. the people who are gatekeepers about it are almost always shitty morons who everyone hates.

Half the fun is figuring it out, It does help to have references of what works and doesn't
1 Write a sentence describing your scene
2 Tag an artist(s).If you want a general style vs a specific artist's sytle. I recommend adding 3 names. Go to artstation find a artist that roughly has the look you're going for if you don't know any names.
3 Apply art style you want Illustration by artist, line art by x,
    4 add adjectives as tags
5 Technical additions, types of camera, types of lens, rending software, game engine.
    6 types of lighting,
7 reference sites, cgsociety, artstation, pixiv etc

Prompts are actually the only thing most people have to feel proprietary about, since the artwork is a combination of the model (they did nothing) and the prompt (something they actually did). It's the only place their egos can feel validated. Personally I will release every halfway decent thing I find because it makes us collectively better.

Spending a few hours trying to close in on the one image that looks like what you're going for our of the hundreds of trillions of latent space images is creative in it's own way as you're battling a system that has zero understanding of what an image even is let alone which tiny few of those images are somewhat aesthetic. Without the human end of the equation it would take longer than the lifetime of the universe to randomly find the one good image.
