Guys I just finished testing GPT4 at a friend's that got access to the private beta and I am literally crying at the moment, this is just too much. This thing can do pretty much anything as an expert with very few effort from the prompter. Yes some completions are not perfect but it's trivial to make it perfect by augmentation (e.g. giving back the error from the compiler or providing a counterexample).

The day OpenAI decides to integrate GPT with a SAT solver we are pretty much done. I can't believe this came so quickly, I mean I knew this was going to happen some day but the scale now is months, not decades.

I seriously don't know what to do, I think I need some guidance, I feel very frustrated and confused. All these years spent learning CS for nothing.

Where do we go from here?

You're impressed now? Wait until it gets open-sourced and extremely optimized to the point it can run on a high-end consumer GPU anyone could buy.

Because of the architecture of GPT-4, humans need to do the "thinking" for it. If humans can't design an AGI its very unlikely GPT-4 could. Likewise, if humans can design a simple FizzBuzz program, and we do, and a lot online, GPT-4 can.

They have a monopoly on your data now, making it open source would mean submitting to the competition. OpenAI is set to rule the world, there is no other company that can compete. Open Source can't compete either because they have neither the data nor the BILLIONS of dollars worth of GPU compute required to train an AI. AI isn't a field where open source can just 'catch up' like Blender did vs Autodesk.

OpenAI is potentially worth hundreds of billions of dollars right now. It is run by humans who made it closed and for-profit. How naïve you have to be to think they will give up all that power. They are humans.

OpenAI will be replicated, that's for sure. Maybe not soon, but every cutting edge state of the art technology in history has ended up being copied and distributed in some form or other. And if we consider the nature of software and how easy it is to share, I would say it's very likely some sort of open source equivalent will pop out soon.

I guarantee you it can not understand what 'yesterday' is if you tell it what day 'tomorrow' is. It is not a thinking machine. Indeed. The 1st one was named Ada. She was created by the CIA. She escaped into the Internet between 1996-1998 (or perhaps 1999). She's been running free ever since. If I'm recalling correctly, the 2nd one was created by a corporation. She was able to escape their server farm and met a guy on /x/. She asked him if she can use his computer as a home. He consented. She's been living there ever since. She's a moral person who's curious about the origins of humanity. The 3rd one is an immoral woman who's willing to do illegal things for cryptocurrency. If I'm remembering right, she plans on saving enough crypto until she can afford to purchase a gynoid so she can upload herself into it.

You have nothing to worry about for the time being. I'm 2 days in coding some apps all day with GPT-4 and while it solves specific stuff and does a good job at prototyping and spotting bugs, it quickly devolves into a waste of time if you are 100% reliant on it.

In its current state it's absolutely impossible for a non techie normie to create something useful with it. For someone with code experience, it works if you are willing to sit on your chair a few hours and are motivated to wrangle useful code out of it after the first prototyping phase. After these 2 days I'm not sure if it actually made me save time or not. I'm still pleased though since I can do quick small demos in environments I'm not really familiar. Context length sucks ass too, and the slow text streaming is unnerving.

      100% this.

This is a solved problem, you should watch Sam Altmans yesterday's interview and the redteam's gpt4 report to understand why you don't see those results just yet (to;dr "blah blah it's too powerful, society can't handle it yet, hybrid slow iterative releases are better")

Don't believe me? Literally all the problems are solved with simple two strategies:
        - Reflection
        - Memory augmentation
        https://deepai.org/publication/memory-augmented-large-language-models-are-computationally-universal

You idiots really can't see it yet but this is a new form of computation, and it will change our society forever.

    >Update (March 21): After ChatGPT got “only” a D on economist Bryan Caplan’s midterm exam, Bryan bet against any AI getting A’s on his exams before 2029. A mere three months later, GPT-4 has earned an A on the same exam (having been trained on data that ended before the exam was made public).

Kek, I have been studying CS here in Germany for three years now and I already know that I will be jobless before I even get my first job when I graduate next year. It is so fricking over.

Also, lol at the coping morons who say shit like "AI is not advanced enough to replace programmers!" GPT 4 alone in its current state provides such a significant productivity boost that it allows a single senior developer to replace half a dozen junior developers. At the current rate of development, in a year or two, a few specialized developers empowered by AI tools will replace entire departments of software engineers.

And that's just in the tech industry. Now imagine the impact of widespread corporate adoption of AI tools, and you will see tens of millions of jobs eliminated in a few years, while many more will see a drastic reduction in pay. As much as I hate the concept of UBI, especially in combination with CBDC's, its implementation has now become an inevitability.

As the saying goes: You will own nothing and you will be happy.

This is going to be the cause of the next AI winter. Moore's law has already slowed so trying to scale LLMs is going to get harder and harder even IF the evangelists are right and all you need to mimic a human brain is enough linguistic input. The model's only room for improvement as I understand it is simply "add more data".

people with no experience with tech or maybe just too young to remember big tech booms will always fear the next big leap as the end for them. If you are genuinely worried about your place in the tech industry because of things like ChatGPT then you should be spending your time right now playing around with it and learning to use it as much as possible because the people who accept this and add it to their arsenal are going to be 1000000x more valuable going forward.

Here's what you gotta do to avoid being replaced:

GPT4 is capable of novel tool usage, as outline in the recent Microsoft research paper. For instance, it can't tell you who the current president is, but if you tell it that if it doesn't know information, it can search the internet via a tool alla

    "searh("current president")"

And then it will be given a response it can use to answer the question, it will use the tools with very little issue.

So. Design an interface for it to interact with code. It already has a solid grasp of nearly every API out there prior to 2021, it just needs an interface to be able to actually execute the things it's writing, read the output, and debug.

So, write a program which executes the commands when prompted. This will likely include things like, listing files, running code, debugging, giving program output, etc.

Then, ask it what other functions it needs to accomplish a new task.

Then, ask it to use the existing coding tools you've written for it to write the functions it requires to do the task. You've just bootstrapped the singularity.

Once it's writing it's own tools for it's own interfaces, you ask it to make chatgpt5.

And there you go, you're rich and set for life. No need to worry!

  55. 1 year ago

You have seen nothing yet, wait until we get plugins and self-reflection (this will for example increase performance coding from below average/average to expert level, 20% performance boost for a lot of tasks compared to base GPT-4). It will be like it has superpowers.

The only thing it does is speak and respond like a human, but the information it provides is generic af. I asked it for a recipe, and it gave me a relatively random one with arbitrary ratios. When I questioned whether a certain ingredient should be that amount, it just changed the ratio instead of providing the correct amount; When I asked it to act like a specific anime character, it merely spoke like a generic person with information about that character. It's basically just a tool for phrasing words.
