There is a serious possibility that humanity might be extinct by 2030, and all anyone can talk about is how to have cybersex with chatbots or using AI to make Drake songs.

It's not that dramatic. The best prediction for technological progress is the devolopment for computing power. By 2045 we will reach the singularity event horizon where AI will frick us in the ass. Enjoy the party while you can.

There are still obvious inefficiencies in hardware and software. Human brain is still pretty small and runs on the same energy as lightbulb for all the cognitive might it has, and that is still with huge fricking neurons that don’t send sygnals at the speed of electrical current, but on speed of ion channels opening up for ions to come trough membrane. We still didn’t even deploy chips with memory and processing done right next to each other rather then within external memory.

            Anonymous

The gains we've gotten so far is throwing more electricity at the problem. We're no where even remotely close to the efficiency of the human brain and if anything we're going the opposite direction. And protip: the AI sucks so it's not going to be able to help make a new novel processor design and you know why? Because the AI is an autocomplete that can only tell you things it has seen previously in the dataset. Compared to a PHD human in processor design the AI is like a moron. You people are simply on another planet with your expectations. You're like the VR morons that say in 10 years we're going to have brain interfaces like Ready Player One.

Once the first AGI drops it will be probably to late for regulations. It is also not a godd idea to let it self edit code and connect it to the internet but that's the current trend with chat bots. We are driving towards a cliff and the view gets better everytime we come closer to it until its to late.

If you're serious about getting into machine learning as a dev, probably better to just start with something simple like scikit-learn and figure out the basics before deciding. You don't need a high end GPU to start learning.

But if you just want to play with local models, I'd go for the desktop PC.

There's a lot of excitement about its potential for medical research. If anons can trick it into saying slurs despite heavy lobotomies, then someone more dedicated could get it to spill the beans on something much more dangerous.

Yud’s proposal to have nukes pointed on every datacenter is dumb because we already have it, but instead of nukes it is simple switch that does not hurt anybody. The pull the plug meme is real, we can use phone to call every data enter for emergency and pull the plug on every cloud computer with no problem.

It's not even hard to have some basic AI proof safety measures: power is accessible in an area separate from the AI and automated systems that could be controlled by a computer. The AI's network usage is strictly controlled by a transparent MITM and the AI is otherwise silo'd on its own network.

i seriously doubt a LLM will be the path to AGI. New solutions that use LLMs to do other stuff is just the best we have right now, but even the intended use is still clunky once you go more in depth. I have access to GPT-4 and i gotta say it never once was able to help me with a more complex coding problem, and i ask it every time before i go looking myself. Same for other text-based tasks but with coding it becomes really apparent. I suggest you read a little more into these things and what kind of magic tricks they really are, might take away some of your fear. AGI is much further away from GPT-4 than you think, even though it being multi modal is definitely a big step in its own right.
