I tell people nowadays that I have a PhD in "AI in physics" because pretty much everything "data scientists" do in real life is shit we physicists have been doing for 70 fricking years, we just didn’t have a buzzword for it because we have better things to do with our time

    ok

the only programmers using LLMs were the people who couldn't do shit without Stack Overflow and their code has only gotten worse because LLMs suck. rent determination is done through actuarial charts same as it has always been done. if actuaries could be replaced they would have been replaced 20 years ago, but you can't just run stats, you have to determine which stats to run based on the specifics of the probability matrix being optimized. ywnbe

This is intentionally obtuse I think. I'm a 200k+ a year programmer and I use LLMs a LOT for boiler plate code, autocomplete, porting between languages, making a small change across a large codebase that's just a little too involved for search and replace, etc.
It doesn't "replace" a good programmer, but it saves them a ton of time, effectively turning one good programmer into 1.5 good programmer.

I have seen an LLM feature implemented into an application that turned filling a medical form from a phone call that took 40 minutes for an employee into 10-15 minutes tops. The entire team was impressed how good it worked. The upper management were practically cumming on the million of dollars they were saving

It's only a matter of time until AI destroys the idea of digital communication entirely. Only thing needs to happen is making current gen AI a lot cheaper to run.
And when it does you can never trust another word, image, video or audio clip ever again. Every email might be a scam no matter how real they seem, every video could be a fake even if you can't actually tell, every phone call could just be a bot using a spoofed number. And they'll all be uniquely customized to fool just you specifically.

is worth twice the gdp of africa despite doing literally nothing
It's because of bandwagon chasing venture capitalists. That makes me think, could it be possible to make venture capitalists pool money to donate to Africa so they could become better in this world and provide value to the world's economy and scientific knowledge?

2 years is nothing and jobs are indeed getting replaced. It doesn't mean they are disappearing, it means the demand is going down, because the best at their job are becoming more productive with AI. I know of people who got replaced by AI and surprisingly they are all in graphics design. I expected call center workers to be the first to start getting replaced.

It's not that AI is a nothing burger. The problem is people putting the cart before the horse and either abandoning or ignoring the steps required for data quality before trying to make models.
The same exact problem has already existed for decades, with data scientists and analysts failing to provide insight for some firms. People watch Moneyball once and think "we should do that go get me ten rain mans right now," completely ignorant of what actually made their models possible.

we knew ai was a nothingburger from the moment they called it ai.
it will have a use but it isn't going to fundamentally change your life in the short term.
it was the new buzzword. the new, hot term thrown around to sound impressive and cool to investors to extract a few more bucks as we teeter closer to various bubbles bursting.
millionares and billionares who weren't self-made (see: all of them) are easily manipulated to part with their cash if you make them feel smart and like they know better.
they got sold the idea that they could save time and money and benefit society as well as their bank accounts while the programmers and engineers got told "just make it good enough to fool them into renewing/donating/investing more and we'll fix the problems later just make it do a cool eye visual-based eyecandy thing and we'll solve those other things later after I quit and move on a month before you're all laid off".
