Cloudflare needs to be hit by antitrust laws. They're literally maintaining a monopoly for Google. Forty percent of the internet uses Cloudflare CDN, meaning any new company that wants to index the web either needs to beg Cloudflare to approve their crawlers, which is harder for big corporations and nearly impossible for small ones, or say goodbye to 40% of the websites. Even in the best-case scenario, a new search engine will miss many websites.

It's annoying, but easy to ignore and it gives the source of the AI's answers, so it's not a huge deal. My concern is 1) why Google is pushing AI as hard as it is, 2) I can't disable it, 3) what comes next.

      Anonymous

Without a narrow niche or topic you're interested in it's basically impossible to make an adequate crawler. Unless all you wanted was a crawler that indexed breaking news or something.

        Anonymous

I was thinking if I had a crawler I could search results by how many other website refer to that site.

Which would be interesting because it'd be cool to see if any high reference websites have links to low reference sites, their information seems more valuable because it's harder to find.

Unlike google which only shows you the most popular stuff

          Anonymous

Spam links exist, so your system will break. You have to do the basics of what Google does: establish domain credibility, use that credibility to determine which links are credible. If I were to make a search engine crawler today I'd at the very least hook up an LLM to attempt to determine whether target domains are credible as well as the quality of the content on the page.

            >as well as the quality of the content on the page
