Nobody is being "targeted", yet. But it's pretty obvious how you can apply this tech to do a Journo's work, or at least most of it. GPT-4 can read text and images; in principle it ought to be able to do the work most journalists do, which is summarize what's going on on Twitter or that has been reported on by the Associated Press.

I'm a freelance content writer (not a journo). The entire field is dead because AI has killed the regular Joe's need for content - admission letters, whitepapers, press releases, whatever. As for journos, you're confusing clickbait with actual quality work - it's true that few people read it, but that's not the problem of people willing to do honest research. Then again no one cares. It's also important to note that these algos steal content and repurpose it without consequence.

Yeah. There used to be a specific subset of writing tasks that people running various wordpress sites wanted - to get a 3000-word article about a certain topic because in their mind it improved SEO. Those articles are meant for the crawlers to read, in other words. Well, now AI will crawl and repurpose human content and then upload it for the other AI to crawl. Double crawl, zero job.

Writers need to specialize in a niche that is not allowed like pornography that violates thought crime laws. Also Nazi fantasy, genocide fiction, hate literature, and so on. You'll just have to find the customers, but I'm sure they are out there.

Not really? Actual journalism is still something that an AI can't really do, even if it is as mindnumbingly simple as doing a review on yet another boring ass incremental, this-one-new-thing-justifies-a-new-model update of a Galaxy or iPone.
"Journalists", such as "I went on reddit today" or "here is MY summary of a different person's work" already know their work is worthless so they're not too huffed about it, or rather have already accepted their fate

How can you train a model to learn about people's biographies without some human having written original things about them? If that sort of thing becomes a trend we will just spiral downwards feeding the AI on it's own shit until neither any human ("why waste time learning it bro the AI does it") nor any AI knows anything. This could set off the new dark ages

The primary task of teachers is babysitting. Teaching is secondary to that task. If you go into teaching full of ideals and aspirations to ignite the fire for learning in the young and all that good stuff, you're destined for a nervous breakdown. The teaching part barely matters, which is why most teachers just walk through the required content with the class following the textbook without enthusiasm.

It's a matter of closed-form solutions. Sure, you can use a N billion parameter model to overfit into any number of problems of reduced complexity (literally every single dynamic process in the universe), but because of the convolutional bullshit that needs to happen to statistically accomodate all those parameters and still converge on a model, you lost all non-statistical meaning to each parameter. They've all turned into this hyperdimensional statistical goop matrix whose correctness space as N grows approaches [-inf, inf] but still has measure 0 kek. You never get answers, just less and less bad answers, and certainly no real understanding of any of the processes that actually generate your inputs in the first place.

Even worse, as your N grows, your correctedness space grows, but you lose more and more flexibility and agility. The markov chain models that powered spam bots of the early 2000s could barely trick a 80year grandma in a chinese room test, and ChatGPT3 beats anyone. But the markov chain modelers trianed on English data could look at a dictionary and do just as good a job in chinese. ChatGPT can't even parse French. A 16 year old highschooler can be given a graph of a gene signalling pathway and they can instantly identify key features. ChatGPT4 can't, even though they trained it on literally the entirety of KEGG, JCDB, Entrez, and Ensemble annotations. It can spit back and summarize input from there, but doing something as simple as telling which gene interacts the most with other genes is out of it's power. It does text, images, and code. It can produce linear combinations of it's inputs. That's it. It can never be used to study any emergent property.

ChatGPT/LLM AI is a dud. Wake me up when they can get Non-negative matrix facotrization models to converge. That'll get God's attention.

It is not that much better than anything there is, Flamingo was able to explain jokes, like 3 months ago, and it is not even about that. Even it was much better, it is about the fact that they don't tell what they discovered, so teams don't really know whether they rediscovered it or discovered something new. It causes a lot of confusion.

I see this as the opportunity of a lifetime. If you have any sort of big project but never had the money or connections to get it off the ground - with ai you can easily just make it yourself alone. I was always more of a jack of all trades type so the cool thing with AI is I don't have to specialize anymore and can just be a control freak and study everything myself so it looks, feels, and sounds perfect.

      >If you have any sort of big project but never had the money or connections to get it off the ground - with ai you can easily just make it yourself alone.
We are 5-10 years away from people being able to make entire animated films by themselves. Have great ideas but no money or artistic talent? Doesn't matter, ai will voice, animate, and compose a soundtrack for your film exactly how you want it to be. We're almost certainly going to get some incredible works this way, since artists having to compromise their vision in order to secure funding or work with a team rarely leads to a better final product.

I think it's even sooner provided you outsource music - there are sites where you can just quickly sample music to find stuff that suits the project you are working. You will have to pay a onetime fee for the right to use the song but this can be done quickly with no development time.

AI voice is already here and a fully functioning free version is nearly a thing too.

Hollywood and AAA gaming has to be panicking right now since all they make is Marvel garbage and sequels. There is no originality left there. If you have any sort of vision you can easily steal the markets of these longtime institutions. We're gonna have a massive wave of new creators for anime/manga/movies/tv/videogames/cartoons/comics. And no one will be able to censor any of it anymore. The elites are definetely gonna do everything to censor and take this away since they can't just easily outspend someone else's passion project now with an AI studio to help him make it in record time for pennies.

I figured the main bottleneck right now is the computing power needed for full animation. But yeah, we're either heading into a bright future where artists can share their full, uncompromising vision with the world. or some horrible dystopia where individuals are forbidden to access this technology and corporate and commercial art is created fully by ai with no human input whatsoever.

There's nowhere to go if AI can do anything that doesn't require hands and walking. I've said before that a service economy is a servant economy. Everyone will be acting as maids and cooks and deliverymen for each other, instead of doing those things for themselves. Employment may become increasingly pointless, but it will persist because it's a critical component of private property laws.

That's still very different than the removal of all existing welfare systems, everyone being forced to work for "the entire day", and non-workers being euthanized. Getting to that point without revolution would require easing into it over the course of decades and the speed of AI development will make that an impossibility.

                Anonymous

Employment becomes the welfare system, it already is in most countries. And without important specialist jobs people become worthless and lose bargaining power. Do you think people aren't being worked to death without rest in rich developed countries right now? Every other week some cleaning company or a restaurant is busted making people work 14 hours a day and withholding payment for months, and food delivery drivers are on the clock 24 hours of the day waiting for calls because that's just how things are done in that industry. It'll be like that, for everyone everywhere. People who can't deal with that will get sent to counseling or someshit where they will be gaslit into signing the suicide papers and it will be celebrated as a caring and humane solution that spares people from enduring a slower death in welfare-less unemployment.

You think a revolution is possible? It only becomes possible if things are so bad that industrial civilisation has already collapsed and there's nothing to reclaim or rebuild upon.

                >Every other week some cleaning company or a restaurant is busted making people work 14 hours a day and withholding payment for months
Because those people are illegal immigrants who, for obvious reasons, don't know about or don't want to interact with government agencies that enforce worker's rights laws. Even in countries like the U.S. that are strongly on the side of corporations rather than workers. the situation you describe would require the repeal of centuries of laws protecting the rights of workers.

                >would require the repeal of centuries of laws protecting the rights of workers
This was already accomplished in a roundabout way, by labeling workers as entrepreneurs or independent contractors. There are other methods too, like chain-hiring someone for short periods instead of making them a permanent hire who would become entitled to certain benefits and protections. And extended internships or just constantly rotating people in and out of internships and never actually hiring any real employees.

don't forget about mafias and hackers who might be out there to get the AI devs. I think it should be more apparent that people should practice opsec better now due to how much sensitive information they own, remember that thing where someone used plex server and got hacked? that's some level 5/5 hacker execution right there. not even skid level but clearly the AI devs are the ones targeted by glows if the elites somehow think it's a threat to their stranglehold.

This is the kind of thing that only a massive corporation or a government could afford to do. The small ai guys never stood a chance. Not everyone has a top 5 supercomputer laying around to train a model with, and very few companies on earth could absorb the million dollars a day it's taking to let everyone play with it for free for publicity, even if it is free beta testing.
