Overpromoted women filling diversity quotas are a penny a dozen, and ChatGPT itself is fairly standard NLP, just much bigger. The real advancement was the invention of the transformer model by Vaswani et al

The real "advancement" was in selling a glorified select case function that regurgitates wikipedia text to a moronic public (and even, lamentably, some of the dimmer academics) as something notable and convincing the whole world except the "schizos" to type exactly what they're thinking with their real name attached to it as confirmed by their cellphone.

Sure you do. Actual researchers are already using ChatGPT to increase their productivity by 50%. Elsewhere, LLMs produced the greatest advancement in our understanding of protein structure in history.

Transformers are better equipped to understand and exploit the grammatical logic of languages than humans are. Hell, ChatGPT scored 147 on a verbal-linguistic IQ test. In 5 years the performance will be staggering. Already new techniques like chain-of-thought reasoning and memory enhancement are eclipsing the state of the art.

Not him (obviously) but I'm ashamed to admit that some professors at my university have said we'll have to do a lot of our assignments in class now due to chatgpt. I came back for a masters after a few years in the real world and it's great comedy sometimes all the frickups and misunderstandings I see, it's just sad to see even some of them seasoned, proper professors are falling for this shit and cs isn't even my main interest.

Yeah of course chatgpt will be able to help with those assignments, where were you for the past 30 years when we could all grab a lot of our answers from google anyway? You just have to hope students will be somewhat honest, you check their comments, and they could easily swap answers with each other anyway. Like what the frick, the continuous assessment is only 10% or 20% of the grade usually, it's meant to be an easy way to gain some marks. What's with all this sperging the frick out.

The Turing Test might as well not exist if there's literally no functional difference between an AI actually gathering sentience or merely faking it through knowledge aggregation. Turing was a massive homosexual anyway.

                Anonymous

Agree, the Turing Test is a bit of a farce. You can't reliably tell the difference between a human and an AI playing chess, that doesn't mean the AI has a mind and thoughts of its own.

Lots of conversations are just the equivalent of animal grooming or touching noses, how was your day, fine you, what did you do at the weekend - yes you can get an ai to say these, but when you realize it's just a bot you're talking to you realize it's just a trick. There is no mind behind it. Like what is all this sperging about - chatgpt is in many ways no more sophisticated than a good chatbot of the 1990s.

you don't work in AI and if you do you should be fired, because you don't understand the difference between the transformer architecture and markov chains. If you really "work in AI", your NLP knowlege is from 10 years ago and you only think you know what you're talking about because you know what a language model is as a statistical prediction mechanism.

        >The advancement was using RLHF to fine tune it.
I wouldn't say that. OpenAI found benefit in using RLHF over supervised learning for InstructGPT, but other groups have found just as much improvement using unrelated techniques. The transformer, on the other hand, is the base architecture for virtually every LLM that matters.

        >Whose idea that was originally is not public knowledge
        I wouldn't say that either.

        https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.02155
If you mean the single person who first suggested it, I'm sure that would long predate any of the actual implementations. It is a fairly obvious idea.

ChatGPT is an API layer for GPT3, the latter which she didn't write. She probably klutzed together some Python Django script, before actual male engineers rewrote it in performant Node.js.
