ChatGPT best practices

How to use ChatGPT for optimal results?

Many sources suggest that a short prompt specifying a single task followed by texts for the task to be carried out on is the best approach.
It does an okay job improving the cohesion and quality of writing of a piece of text when prompted with the "Act as an AI Writing Tutor" (https://github.com/f/awesome-chatgpt-prompts)

But that doesn't really work when the task is not atomic, but rather to integrate information in steps before providing the desired output.
For example, how to use ChatGPT 4 (assuming it's actually the best version for this kind of thing) to write a killer motivation letter for grad admissions? The goal is to feed it relevant applicant information and make it write a letter on par with Ivy admits.
To achieve that, it has to first be fed with:
-key information from CV
-the current motivation letter (in hopes it discerns and infers relevant ideas and discards the weak points)
-uni and programme characteristics so that it can tailor the letter and make it seem like the candidate is a perfect match

Are there strategies allowing for using ChatGPT 4/3.5 for this kind of task? Perhaps there is other technology available to consider?

I've been using chatGPT to summarize scientific articles into plain English for me. It's much easier to understand than whatever autistic garbage scientists write.

      >It's much easier to understand than whatever autistic garbage scientists write
why do scientists write it that way though?
      do they lack verbal skills?

Sometimes they say one paragraph just for one sentence. It pisses me off because they could just say the thing

    >CV
For what purpose? There won't be any jobs for humans soon. Name one field that won't be replaced by AI in 3-5 years. We can just hope to receive our UBI and play with ChatGPT in our free time.

      -key information from CV

So that the model is provided more information that it might deem useful in writing the motivation letter

The only thing GPT can do well is code. This is the only use case where it defeats professionals outside of small industries like translation and home tutoring. Really. This is why SV is acting like it’s the apocalypse. It kills SWE salaries. It’s over for them.

GPT is *potentially* a great front-end interface to web search.

    >short prompt
the moire info and description of what you are trying to do the better. short prompts open it up to more assumptions, unless that's what you're after always be descriptive.

Begin the conversation by assigning it a role, and describing the responsibilities of that role. Tell it to assume that identity unless you say otherwise.

This can help prevent generation of garbage data, and if you're clever, this can even make the AI say "Black person"

That was patched in the March 23 update. You have to use "System Cards" the secret undocumented woke COBOL that it's actually programmed in.

Look up special articles or books from people who have done it before you start consulting GPT. But otherwise I guess by prompting it correctly you could get it to make something that sounds feasible. But I wouldn't expect GPT to know about specific demands of grad admission letters. If you have to rely on GPT to come up with a letter, I feel you are doomed. It should supplement not take over your thinking.

I personally use GPT as a kind of tutor while studying, if I have a question on some terms/topics I ask it for a explanation and a classical example and it usually explains it very well. Helps me cement my understanding. I wouldn't trust it with making anything more substantial since it tends to hallucinate non-existing information quite a lot.

You can use it to code and translate language from one language to another, including computer text and markup languages and cyphers. It can act as a chatbot and effectively portray a personality type. It’s not useful for a creative endeavor and actually quite bad at research and finding information. The problem is Google is just worse than ever these days.

If you attempt to use it to write an admission letter the committee will instantly recognize it as being written by GPT-4. It has an incredibly distinct voice.

Write your own letter then ask the bot to fix it up and evaluate its suggestions yourself.

I saw people suggesting using ChatGPT for research brainstorming. I tried it a few times and it was utterly useless. At best it repeated wikipedia-tier common knowledge. I'm not doing research with that. I'm starting to regret giving them my phone number.

      Research brainstorming is a stretch.
The goal here is to find an optimal way to use this tool for tasks a bit more complex than just atomic laser-focused monothematic performance it seems to only be good for given a concise prompt.

Although, seems like the march 23 patch curbed even that?

Think of chatgpt as a word calculator we interact with and give structure. It may be simpler to envision chatgpt, as a dead and inert mind incapable of generating new information. What it excels at is merging ideas in various combinations, guided by the prompt.
Its a very low tier but a geniune part of the process of creativity.
