Chat GPT can now decode all redacted documents

Someone fed a partially redacted NSA document on UFOs into ChatGPT and it was able to decode the redacted portion.

This is huge. From now on there will be almost no redacted documents. The government will have to release the entire document or keep it entirely secret.

Anyone with even the slightest interest in such documents needs to begin feeding as many of them as you can into chat GPT before the Glowies shut it down!

I seriously hope nobody actually believes this. It doesn't "decode" anything it just makes stuff up.

No anon, it can see through the blacked out censored parts and is unredacting them. It definitely isn't just filling in the missing text with what it "thinks" might follow the text before that based on its training in text completion.

If that's true then programs could have done it for decades, you really think they missed this possibility?

Hiya, data scientist/Machine learning engineer here:

AI isnt 'decoding' anything here. Its basicsllh predicting the most likely words to follow. It isnt decoding anything. It basically looks at the words that came before the redacted sements and after, and uses the most likely word that would fit between.

Its great for sparking imagination, but it cant be taken as fact.

    >decode
You are a braindead fucking idiot and I'm sure a Markov Chain Generator would look like magic to you. I could fucking "decode" this document in 30 minutes with nothing but python 3 and a couple glowie source docs.

if you had source docs it'd probably do a better job lol

I'd guess it just fills the gaps with what it deems to be most probable in the given context, but it's guessed content in that scenario.
