None of that is practical or functional in the real world.

I build and service very niche automated machines for a living, I am not worried about losing my job to a robot any time in my lifetime, but I don't believe that it's immune to automation. In fact, if it wasn't such an expensive and complex task to replace my ilk with ai robots, the industry would much prefer keeping all humans out of the factories. with it being just a question of resource/time investment to develop the automated tools and processes, I know that the end game given enough time will be for that to happen (even if it takes 200 years, that's where it's going). Things like cars and trucks and trains are all much simpler and built on much larger scale than anything I work on, so if my job can be automated (which I am confident that with enough time and a lot of development effort by smart organized people, which an advanced AI would essentially be), then I am sure most other blue collar jobs could as well.

Assuming it doesn't have access to suitable real-world manipulators (it will, eventually), it can simply give step by step instructions to anyone with an 80iq working for food scraps since they will have no choice.

Having an "AI" pass a BAR exam or code itself is easy. That's pen/paper shit.
Having a functional affordable mechanical solution driven by a silicon mind is not possible with current levels of human intelligence. And no AI is smarter than the smartest people on earth. In fact so far these things are functioning barely better than midwit level, because computer scientists are mostly midwits.

You don't need to have a big brain to do plumbing or fix a powerline. There are picturebooks about it and the AI can just read the books out loud to a dumb worker and they will be able to do it.

AI will be able to recognize images, and speak. Service labor is at great risk. And it also paves the way for hardware to be able to be versatile, and have some degree of problem solving.

                >or in a garage or machine shop?
Thing is a lot of stuff like that probably doesn't need to exist in the first place. iPhones are incredibly complex and even when the parts are available they can be broken in a such a way that they are very difficult to repair, even for someone with a lot of skill and the right equipment. But it doesn't matter because you can just throw it away and get a new one.
Same with cars. Yes it's very difficult work of a person to disassemble an automatic transmission and rebuild it correctly, but you don't ever really need to do that when you can buy a new car.
                >but it's expensive
Doesn't stop people from buying new phones every year and buying new cars every few years.
Plumbing can be solved with prefab factory built houses with the plumbing already installed, with some braindead simple connectors on it to hook it up to the city infrastructure on site.
If it breaks, who cares? Move into a hotel for a week while robots replace your whole house. They don't need to know how to solder two copper pipes together, they only need to know how to attach to some hardpoints and lift.

This is Dunning-Kruger in full effect. Most of the smartest, most driven people i know are pursuing AI related fields - computer vision, self-driving cars etc.
The reason why blue collar work is not at immediate risk is because the problem robotics still needs to solve are more exoensive than writing code on a machine. What do you think is going to happen when all of robotic advancements get increased 10x because of AI? How long until its cheaper to buy a robot that maintains your whole house instead of hiring workers? They are allready dirt cheap to completely clean your floors (100$ range) so bye bye cleaning ladies

Maybe not. The LLM's are hugely inefficient. They're not even exactly sure what part makes them work, which implies that a lot of the network and parameters could be dead weight.
It could be that if they are able to trim the fat, they get a model that's a tiny fraction of the size and runs a thousand times faster. Maybe this has already been done, I'm not keeping up on the research.

          Anonymous

In the past few weeks, there have already been LLM optimization advancements. You can now run 90% GPT4 clone locally with high end consumer hardware. Training is also being optimized by having new models being trained by existing deep trained models.

Plebs will never have the top of the line versions,, but even at this early stage, it's looking like usable local AI instances are very possible.

yes with ubi, a subsidy is paid to the wage earner making it cheaper to employ. in the ideal case, the value of ubi outweighs the value of most menial labor, and so work becomes effectively voluntary. you could think of this like '$120k per person every year and free benefits and education'. if that was the univeral baseline, it would become free to employ people who wanted to work beyond doing nothing because all their basic needs are cometely solved.

      Anonymous

But then from the point of view of the people with the power to do something about it, why would they want useless eaters consuming all their resources? Even if automated labor is very cheap there is still a limited supply of many natural resources, why should the eaters get it? Why not just let them die?

humans always share plenty. theres plenty. the natural price of everything is $0 and the best way to achieve that is make work voluntary. make tbe minimum basic income $1m per year. what difference does it make?

          >theres plenty. the natural price of everything is $0
But it will never be $0. It will always be some value strictly greater than zero. Consider that many megacorps today are so stingy that CEOs will give themselves million dollar raises while refusing to pay their workers more than minimum wage. They aren't interested in shared, they want everything to the last penny going to them.

Depends on who programmed it. I'm very skeptical of the Teslas even because when they frickup it's in a really dumb and dangerous way (sudden braking on the highway in traffic, driving into semis, swerving head on into opposing traffic). Automation and AI will take Say 80% of the jobs

    The 0.1% control the politicians

Without severe wealth redistribution there is no way to bridge that divide and the welfare program will collapse

I expect an actual virus that kills 80% of the human population in the next 40 years

Probably concentrated in Africa and Asia with Europe and America getting hit only by the Poors

If I had to guess. My guess would be that there is a contingency plan developed by the American government to spread a deadly virus in the event of a revolutionary leader taking charge of the government
