I can feel society undergoing massive changes in the next decade.
Not just minor improvements here and there, but AI singularity will realistically happen in our lifetime.

Is it really moving fast or is it being overhyped since all the other tech bubbles (crypto, web3, VR, IoT, innovations in phones and PCs, etc...) are not working?

      A bit of both
Its certainly moving fast, but people are already acting like its omnipotent and not just a clever text generator

        >acting like its omnipotent and not just a clever text generator

Yes, it's not artificial intelligence. It's just a text generator with a lot of data points.

It's only making waves because as it turns out clever text generation is enough to replace all human intellectual work.

It’s objectively moving fast, but the reason for this is that the tech companies want to cover their ass after firing thousands and thousands of people over the past months.

Tech has seen a million "this is going to be the thing that changes the course of humanity" moments, and they almost never pan out.
AI seems like a really major thing, but I'm so jaded from the overhype-underdeliver cycle that I can't bring myself to really believe anything is going to come of it.

those advancements have changed the course of humanity, they have just been normalized and somehow human nature and psychology always seems to remain the same

Internet did change the course of humanity.
PCs did change the course of humanity.
Smartphones did change the course of humanity.
Social media did change the course of humanity.
If you're 45+ rn, you've already lived through three/four major paradigm shifts in human history caused by technological innovation.
      AI might yet be another.

The Internet is the only one of those things that really changed the course of humanity much if at all. The rest are just major consumer successes. If all AI does is bring about a new class of useful tools then fine, but I'm talking more about the concerns that it'll render all human intellectual work obsolete or even bootstrap the singularity. With how fast it's improving, I'm having trouble believing that programmers and authors and pretty much any other job that doesn't require complex physical tasks will have any reason to exist in a few more years - and that's a major upset to all of humanity, not just a new tool we can use to be individually more efficient.

    heres the thing

if you run a business that is in any way associated with digital technology and/or the internet, and you AREN'T currently investigating and getting involved in MLA/AI, your business will not exist in 5-10 years, and this I can personally guarantee.

Screenshot this and stick it on your wall. Not that we'll be able to post here in five years with the plethora of bots overrunning it, but if you're still around here somewhere in five years and can prove this to me, I will post a video of me printing the post out and eating it.

      >Screenshot this and stick it on your wall
Not unless you find a way to formally bet a large amount of money on it

post a <crypto> address here in 5 years and I'll give you the then-equivalent of today's $100 USD in a coin of your choice

          Anonymous

That's not a formal bet. Put the money in escrow now or frick off.

            Anonymous

I can't guarantee that $100 USD today will hold it's value. I will give you the equivalent value in 5 years.

You really seem to think non-AI internet businesses will not have a significant disadvantage in five years, don't you? Why is that? Do you not understand that in the last 8 months ALONE we have effectively increased the complexity of JUST GPT over 100-fold? And that's just LLM, that's not even considering other forms of MLA that are still developing such as optical recognition like in manufacturing applications.

Again I GAURUNTEE that any business not actively investigating the commercial viability of AI/MLA RIGHT NOW will not exist in 5-10 years.

It's really not. OpenAI is just good at presenting it and making you think it is for their stock prices to go up.
