There is really nothing compelling about the metaverse. For the average consumer, the VR headset is a barrier to entry rather than the immersive tool its proponents claim. Anyway, what Meta has produced so far doesn't even satisfy the meaning of the term metaverse. They're just using it as a buzzword to describe a VR MMO game. Even if the metaverse as a concept succeeds, Meta is not giving me confidence that they'll be the ones to make it work.

Those things are orthogonal. Many companies are investing huge in the metaverse, not only Meta. PDAs, smartphones, and GPS were all niche until the iPhone came out.

Cool, but until someone creates a more convenient interface that doesn't involve controllers and strapping a screen to your face lchained to a pc then the public is never going to take to it. And thats on top of it making a lot of people motion sick and being prohibitively expensive for its uses beyond being a gimmicky game system.

Haha, a weird system. Carmack himself programmed the Doom port, Raiden looks neat and has the distinction of being one of, if not the only, ports of a Japanese title on the Jag (but by Atari, of course, as they never got any Jap third parties I think, just like how they also did ports of Jap arcade titles like Commando and Ikari on the 2600/7800). .

    >the “metaverse”
    >basically just a social world platform
Not a new idea by any means but a new implementation could work if they do it right. Social world games all have some kind of limitation depending on their audience, foundation, economy and visual style. Take habbo hotel for example. Habbo is a social world game, however limiting in user creativity by not allowing user created content, you’re working off of what the game provides. The economy is non transferable so money seeking hobbyists aren’t into it, and overall it leaves the game more in a “virtual chat room” space. Which a lot of people like and habbo has been popular for that for a long time.
Roblox is arguably another social world but with kid friendly content moderation. It does have user generated content almost exclusively and a transferable economy. You have everything there but to appeal to as large of an audience as possible it has content limitations to keep it kid friendly. This is stupidly successful as I think anyone under the age of 25 has played roblox at least once.
SecondLife is the ancient one which takes the all user generated approach but with a platform and style based around three content tiers, general, moderate and adult. So there’s a world of stuff that appeals to anyone old enough to confidently say “ass” on the internet, one for adults that can talk about adult subjects, and one for adults who are there to virtually frick.
This limits the audience but leaves the creativity uncapped, you can make or do anything, but the audience for that is small.

The Facebook metaverse concept is the worst of all worlds, where the only thing it’s doing right is the platform concept being virtual reality and integrating it in with many other features.
      >limited user created content
      >strict rules to keep the world tame and censored
      >not a platform direct transferable economy but one where you can freely link other monetary attributes to it
      >focusing too heavily on the “virtual life” aspect rather than what the platform is capable of for all types of users

SecondLife still exists because it’s not afraid to attract weirdos, that game is probably 50% furries, 40% Role-playing teenagers, and 10% housewives from 2003 who never left 2003, and they’ve accomplished some pretty amazing things. The level of user created content there is unrivaled, the variety and quality is through the roof. By having an environment that appeals to “basically anyone” you attract anyone who can figure out the game. That’s SL’s flaw, it’s got a fairly steep learning curve and then if you want to make your own stuff, time to busy out a 3D modeling software, photoshop, learn to program, and then import your creation into the game for a fee.

Zuck needs to attract all audiences and provide an easy to play game and he’s got a winner.
      Oh wait I’m moronic
      >VRchat is already exactly that

He didn't hire anyone except other israelites, those israelites used 3rd party companies to do the hiring process. Those companies just hire the cheapest talent available.

Zuckerberg doesn't know anything about creating products or technology, he just knows business. He's like Bill Gates, a fake nerd. The only thing he wanted is more control over the population by dataming them 24/7. That was his dream. And he lost half his fortune on that bet.

You're fricking moronic. Zuck knows tech and basically only tech. He knows how to code pretty well and has done that. Facebook was very successful and he's been riding that success enough to make a lot of cash from it. Business is all done by suits at Facebook which they've done a fairly good job of acquiring shit like WhatsApp and instahomosexual.
The problem is, zuck being a tech nerd, decided that he likes the idea of VR and him being the big boss, he can do what he wants, so he bets big on VR because he likes it.
I'm sure there's a bunch of fricking dweebs in his business team who are saying shit like "wtf are you doing? VR isn't useful and won't make us any money." And zuck just ignores them and continues dumping resources into it, so him and ask the other tech nerds have fun making VR good, while it hemorrhages money.
Bill Gates was a mega nerd too, you stupid frick. If you don't think he was a mega nerd who surrounded himself with cutthroat business guys to take care of all the homosexual business stuff, you're moronic.

Literally, from every single gamer I have known IRL they like the concept of VR but prefer not using it because they play games to relax and not work out. Also, as someone who used the oculus a lot in elite dangerous before odyssey it does get uncomfortable after a while and it leaves red marks on your face while also producing a lot of heat in your face which could lead to sweating and water + tech don't mix, in general.

Also, the anon you're responding to is correct. Both Zuck the cuck and Billy boy are fake nerds and put on a show more than they actually know. They take credit more than anything even though they shouldn't be taking credit the way they do. Billy boy and zuck cuck get deals for the credit stealing but the people who actually put the leg work in remain unknown.

I've got an oculus quest 2 to play half life alyx and the tech impressed me a lot and while I agree I also like to play games sitting down, I don't think that should mean VR will die. It's very cool, but the number of worthwhile titles is slim at best and seems to take devs fricking forever to build them. I don't think it'll ever venture beyond niche status and while it's fun, I don't see it being much bigger than it currently is.
Also, Carmack leaving Oculus does not bode well for the future. Also yeah VR motion sickness and how hot it gets is real and it's uncomfortable for more than like 2 hours of play.
Regarding zuck and Billy, yeah they take more credit, and now I'll bet that zuck and Billy do close to no code and almost definitely don't push any production code, but saying that they're not tech gays is bullshit.

The motion sickness thing never bothered me. VR doesn't trick my mind like it does normies but I used it for elite dangerous because it made ships kilometers out in the black appear bigger and it was much easier to hit their subcomponents easier and consequently made it easier to track the smaller, faster ships since if they flew past the front of my wienerpit I could keep eyes on them with the other windows in the federal corvette. I literally performed better with the headset in elite dangerous than without it while using a hotas stick. Was real fun

              >the number of worthwhile titles is slim at best and seems to take devs fricking forever to build them
It's because pretty much nobody is actually building them. Facebook's moneyhatting combined with the insistence of their super shitty hardware in the Quest pretty much killed that. You cannot build HL Alyx to run on Quest hardware, it's just too slow. Everyone is making shit that can run on Quest, or taking a dump on their own older, more advanced titles to port them to it, but in any case nobody is making VR titles that target something far beyond what you can do on a Quest. That pretty much means that you will not get anything which will rival Alyx any time soon. It would be difficult to match even if other devs were actually trying, but they're not even doing that.

I guess Valve themselves might be making more games, I mean they said they are but there's a clear chance that Valve simply grew tired of VR and may have moved to something else. Even if that's not the case they're still a single studio and aren't even that huge (in terms of man-power), they can't pump out enough top-tier VR games to shoulder the whole otherwise extremely lackluster industry on their own. I suppose Sony is another candidate with the budget to do it and have a new headset coming out, but as a customer the idea of buying into a walled garden VR headset when the VR game market is so completely trash is not appealing at all. On PC at least you have modding and shit, some of the most fun I've had in VR has been with various mods, but if you pick a walled garden console you don't even get that.

Basically the software side of VR looks pretty bleak if the Quest shovelware isn't your cup of tea.
