"most of the coding jobs" are bullshit anyway. The l3rn 2 c0de era is finally over, talentless hacks will have to find another industry to destroy.

Only if we're talking about entry-level jobs. No way in hell managers will be able to describe problems in a detailed and unambiguous enough way for AI to understand properly any time soon. What I imagine is the following:

    1) Entry-level jobs - gone

    2) Middle-level jobs - gradually being turned into an unstimulating process of watching and guiding the AI model that writes the code for you. Eventually, this would be as intellectually interesting as flipping a burger at McDonalds.

    3) Senior-level jobs - virtually all of them will be about machine learning engineering or machine learning DevOps.

My fear is that middle managers who managed to gather the most power and survive and even thrive in an a meritocratic environment even though they didn't and couldn't do anything useful will be the ones who come out on top, and coders will be the ones getting fired.

have you even used chatgpt? it can't code for shit
understandably, since it's just a l337c0d3 and stackoverflow search engine that somewhat understands text
it's at best a more advanced autocomplete for your editor of choice, if you ever try to use it for anything more substantial, you'll spend more time fixing the hallucinated mess than if you wrote it yourself

I have, and that was my exact takeaway. But with the 32k context length of GPT4 and whatever the frick GPT5 and 6 will be, I can easily imagine it'll be able to put together a smartphone app from a prompt.

            > I can easily imagine
good, because that's all it's going to be - just a better hidden hallucination generator
i'm not complaining, in fact i welcome codelets using this tool because, when your shit inevitably breaks i'll be the one your managers will hire to fix it
this meme learning boom is a goldmine for programmers, just like the pajeet outsourcing has been - i 10x'd my salary from codemonkey to "fixing pajeet's java mess" and i'm about to 10x it again by going "fixing pajeet's gpt-hallucinated java mess"
and when meme learning models actually become usable? i will just retire, pajeets already set me up to a comfy life

Somehow i don't think anything will change that much. Since the last gpt release all I've seen was actual drop in quality of questions on a couple of gamedev channels that i monitor.
People ask chatgpt, even if it gives advice they are left with no understanding. People are amazingly moronic. Saying that chapgpt will replace low level jobs is like saying having an internet connection at all times would eliminate stupidity. Oh wait

        It's already over.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, any hope for overthrowing the capitalist system has evaporated. Soon the richgays, the social class that can comfortably live from their capital and top level management jobs, will live in their gated communities automating the jobs they don't feel like doing, while the rest of society struggles to survives and see their neighborhoods filled with crime and homelessness. Soon every country will look like those African countries with extreme inequality, with small, secluded places of extreme comfort and a huge majority living in squalor.

It will be like apartheid, and all of us will be Black folk.

Unironically China will implement UBI and later full blown neo communism once literally everyone is replaced by AI before the US passes even UBI, Americans would rather die than have socialized anything.

In the end Marx won, all he had to do was wait for capitalism to invent the replacement for humans.

With the fall of socialism in Europe and the collapse of the USSR, China is literally, unironically, humanity's last hope.

If the Communist Party of China were to fall, as their Soviet forefathers tragically did, the global capitalist elites will use the coming advances in AI and robotics to make themselves impervious to any attempt at being overthrown by the masses, and humanity will be unironically, literally, factually, unquestionably and irreversibly doomed to turn into a nightmarish dystopia. These are the signs of the times, the stakes really are that high.

China's more fascist than it is communist. It's as communist as the DPRK is democratic. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

There shouldn't really be a need to work more than 10 hours per week if the technology is that good. The abundance would lead to things being dirt cheap. Instead we have artificial scarcity, debt based currency, and bullshit "jobs" like gig work to pay for inflating prices on essentials.

you don't understand how capitalism works. nothing exists in isolation. if one company figures how how to increase efficiency by 5% all the other companies will just copy it.

It's extremely effective at problems with solutions that are already in its corpus so I'm surprise it's struggling with any leetcode problems considering that those have been discussed to death on the internet.

It's basically useless if you ask it something that is almost entirely unrecognizable to something it's already gotten an answer for.
