Media tends to portray Tesla/Musk as "falling apart" for the last 10 year or so, every year.

Take as as you may. He hasn't fallen apart, he's climbed up higher and higher ever since media has attacked him for the last decade.

Sabbatical doesn't imply going on a trip. You can "take a sabbatical" by sitting on your ass at home watching TV the entire time.

I drive a tesla and I couldn't give two shits about auto pilot. It's the least interesting aspect of modern cars to me

I just that torque and low maintenance. The $10 's for a full, 320mi 'tank' isn't too bad either

      Anonymous

Lmao. It just so happens that any maintenence needed is just stupid expensive. And yes you do still need to change your brakes and tires. Also have fun with the 20k bill when your battery inevitably dies, as this is a fact of physics and cannot be changed by modern battery technology. Enjoy your ugly bug car with terrible quality control and ikea interior lol

        Anonymous

The whole battery dieing thing has been drastically overstated. There are plenty of ten year old Model Ss driving around on the original battery at this point. They have held their value quite well; a decade old Model S will still sell for $30k or more, while a BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S class of the same vintage can be had for under $20k.

Also for Teslas (or any other electric/hybrid car, really) brake pad changes are required a lot less often than conventional cars, thanks to the regenerative braking.

          Anonymous

Any moron buying a 10 year old electric vehicle for 30k deserve to be hit with a moron tax when they have to replace the battery

          >There are plenty of ten year old Model Ss driving around on the original battery at this point.
Is that supposed to be impressive? A normal 10 year old car is barely even broken in, nowhere near end of life.

From what I can tell, AI hasn't progressed beyond the same data structures and algorithms that it begun with minus a couple of minor advancements. The fact that Elon keeps claiming that FSD will be ready "within a year" every year for the last 7 years suggests he doesn't even know how this stuff works. There is no possibly way to map the progress of disengagements with an end date.

Karpathy is definitely good, im not trying to knock him, but I wouldn't say he was in the elite tier of researchers. I kind of think Elon hired him because he was able to explain how neural nets work to Elon.

The AI director role at tesla seems to be much more about building the infrastructure and systems around data collection and training models than doing actual research. I don't think this was karpathys strength and he probably felt a little out of place in the role.
