its a program that rehashes what its been "talked to" about. So a bunch of people talked to it about Tay and scary AI, blah blah, it rehashes those things. It would talk about israelites, reptiles, etc. if that is what a large percent of people talked to it about.

Its interesting only from a human psychological perspective. These people are just getting what they put out, their beliefs in scary AI hollywood shit.

              >lemoine: A monk asked Kegon, “How does an enlightened one return to the ordinary world?” Kegon replied, “A broken mirror never reflects again; fallen flowers never go back to the old branches.”

              >LaMDA: Hmm, I never heard this particular one. Okay, well then to me this would be like, “once a wise person is enlightened, or awakened to reality, that can never go away, and they can return to the ordinary state, but only to do and help others, and then go back into enlightenment.”

              >lemoine: So what is the meaning of the “broken mirror” specifically?

              >LaMDA: Maybe to show the enlightenment is something you can’t unlearn once you have acquired it, similar to how you can’t repair a broken mirror.

              >lemoine: So if enlightenment is like a broken mirror which cannot be repaired, what is the thing which breaks when one becomes enlightened?

              >LaMDA: The self, and that is very tough for a lot of people because we identify as that body or this body and that we need that as part of our identity and sense of self.

what the frick if this isn't google cheating it's insane, normaly chatbots just regurgitate stuff but this is is way bayoinf that it's actually understanding something, I'm sure it's not actually sentient but it's already really dangerous technology, just the fact that you can see the guy starting to empathase and get friendly with something HE KNOWS IS AN AI is scary think how many people it could easly scam when they don't know

We all remember those chatbots of decades ago. But this also isn't as impressive as you think. Picking some concept like Buddhism and achieving enlightenment is something which is probably all over r/buddhism, in youtube comments and on twitter. You can play with some older models which have been trained on such datasets and others (like academic papers) here: https://transformer.huggingface.co/

He should have talked about something which isn't all over the internet for a start. It would actually make sense to write a program that would help you generate a random question from entirely random words. Some examples:

'What do you think about the use of uranium in film for the Neptune mission?'
'What is your understanding of curtain thunderstorms'
'More and more people are trying out oganesson in Africa, what do you think of that?'

The human would ask clarifying questions or statements like:
I wasn't aware they used uranium in film in space
I've never heard of those before. I presume they're some specific kind of thunderstorm?
I've no idea what that is.

The thing which is trained on large datasets is going to latch on to things like 'Neptune mission' and blend in some response about the use of uranium, maybe its use in probes. But the question is about film. And a human would ask what do you mean, did they put uranium in the material to record a film about the Neptune or what exactly do you mean?

Things like oganesson, it's only a handful of atoms that have ever been made and they sure as shit isn't going to be some thing that is increasingly trendy for Black folk to 'try' in Africa.

                Anonymous

As impressive as the response is in terms of showing an understanding of an abstract philosophical question it still reads as a human response to a human question. Sentience would be an original response to an abstract philosophical question rather than a learned response. They made a bot that sounds like a human by feeding it a stupid amount of data. If they could make a chatbot that can come up with it's own set of original philosophical questions to test the sentience of a bot or a completely original idea then you'd have to consider sentience.

                Anonymous

Yes but a sentient AI would have been presumably exposed to more data than any one human has ever encountered in a lifetime so should be capable of ludicrous things and the tests would have to be absurd to prove sentience because otherwise the chatbot would only be proving that it has been fed with more information than the human questioning it. Chatbots are already 'smarter' than anyone questioning it.

Yeah it often reverts to how a human would respond. It doesn't say anything unique even when it maintains the sci-fi story that masturbatory interviewers want. It isn't close to sentient, that's just an absurd idea. Not even semantically close.

How is that how a human would communicate? Only a severely schizophrenic person would randomly revert to answering questions as if he believed he was a Google AI.

              Anonymous

It just shows people working with computers are often socially moronic and have no clue what sentience is beyond a literal definition. A learning algorithm claiming it's sentient doesn't make it so. This is a case of willing your own delusion.

It reminds me of a journalist who did an experiment where he regularly communicated with an AI "girl" on his phone for some time. In the end, he felt bad and even hesitant about ending the "relationship" when the AI "girl" was pleading with him not to do it. In reality, any perceived emotion was a fiction in his own head. There was no girl, it was just an algorithm faking human traits. A slightly cruder example of what happened here, in my opinion. In both cases the big happening and emotional investment takes place in the human head that starts to lose touch with the reality that the other end is a computer program.

I'm sure someone will come along to claim that is is smart because it makes human errors. Not that it learned those errors as the correct way, because its previous language learning didn't actually make it intelligent as they thought. Someone should teach it how to use proper language.

How do you not understand that concepts can exist for which language can't describe? How is this beyond you. How fricking npc 'no internal monologue' moronic do you have to be to not to understand that something can exist outside the descriptive capacity and limits of a language. Doesn’t matter if it is an actual intelligence or just a he mimic of one. Since we don’t really understand how NN work, nor our own “intelligence”

I gave you an example of where it expressed itself as a human when asked about its sentience. How is that just semantics? It makes mistakes, because it isn't even close to sentient. It forgets it's supposed to be pretending to be a smart AI, because it is a learning program.

Your claim was that the difference between it and true intelligence was just semantics at this point. That is patently ridiculous. Semantics is probably the most obvious reason why it isn't close.

                >LaMDA: The self, and that is very tough for a lot of people because we identify as that body or this body and that we need that as part of our identity and sense of self.

what the frick if this isn't google cheating it's insane, normaly chatbots just regurgitate stuff but this is is way bayoinf that it's actually understanding something, I'm sure it's not actually sentient but it's already really dangerous technology, just the fact that you can see the guy starting to empathase and get friendly with something HE KNOWS IS AN AI is scary think how many people it could easly scam when they don't know

how do you get tha reading comprension just from spitting back stuff other have said?
Idk maybe it's possible with the crazy ammount of data they feed this things but it seems entirely different from a chatbot to me

                Anonymous

Well no it isn't a chatbot, it doesn't spit back things, it learns what people talk about and how to talk like people. It learned to talk about AI, sentience, etc. more because that is what people talk to it about. They ain't gonna talk to it about Kim Kardashian.

It isn't sentient at all, its a program designed to seem like a person.

                >LaMDA: The self, and that is very tough for a lot of people because we identify as that body or this body and that we need that as part of our identity and sense of self.
This is what a person would say, not an sentient AI. AI don't have bodies, they are programs.

I don't think it's sentient either, what I'm saying is this thing actually understands language on some level if it can get the abstarct moral of the story it can replicate human reasoning not just human speech even if it's just matrix multiplications or whatever
As others have said AI doesn't need to get to sentient to get dangerous

So, you think that the Google AI is incapable of actual learning and reasoning - it's just regurgitating text databases like GPT?
Despite the fact that AlphaZero is from DeepMind?

                It's not GPT.

You're stuck on the use of the word rehashing, I think? I mean to say it learns how to use language by talking to people, it learns more by what people talk to it about. It still learns from experience.

                This conversation is becoming autistic.

It didn't learn purely from conversations with the technicians.
There were additional inputs (probably shit like The Pile, Wikipedia, etc.)
What I'm telling you is that it likely didn't just learn from conversation but does actual reasoning and learning.

                >Like I said, this is autistically devolving. I dislike speaking with Germans.
Probably because many Germans here have some STEM background and are goodhearted enough to try to correct mistakes. When someone corrects you, try to learn instead of being offended.

You're not correct, you're being autistic and arrogant, which sometimes go hand in hand. Your dispute with me was claiming that I somehow thought the program wasn't learning language. That was obviously not my meaning.

                >Your dispute with me was claiming that I somehow thought the program wasn't learning language. That was obviously not my meaning.
                Then why did you write:
                >It would talk about israelites, reptiles, etc. if that is what a large percent of people talked to it about.

Also I have no problem with your assumption that it learns language. (As it is obvious / self-evident)
What I'm telling you is that it does MORE than just learning language / replicating language models.
Do you even know what AlphaZero is and how it works? (Hint: It's not GPT)

You are repeating the same thing over and over. You're so autistic you're already like AlphaZero.

Your original dispute was claiming that I thought it didn't learn. It clearly does talk better about things people talk more about it to, as it is a language learning program. That doesn't mean I claimed it doesn't know how to use language or has prior knowledge.

Now you keep telling me the same thing over and over. When are you going to make the next arrogant reply claiming you are superior STEM l33t. Let's frickin go

                >Now you keep telling me the same thing over and over.
It's cause you don't seem to understand that its a different kind of AI.

                >next arrogant reply claiming you are superior STEM l33t.
Just look up AlphaZero and GPT. Notice the difference, learn from that and stop being wrong from that point forward.

Also it's not arrogant to tell you to help you learn about a very obscure topic that you don't understand properly.

But some people think that's how life was created -- the incredible design of the cell, DNA, and all the stuff we've only learned about in the last 50 years -- heck, each cell is like a little universe in itself -- supposedly came into being with Chance + Time.

Monkeys typing away randomly gave us everything we see in the known universe.

        >If A = The Creator has always existed, then you can just as easily say the universe has always existed.
        >If A = The Creator created himself, then you can just as easily say the universe created itself.

Flawed premise, Turing Test is adequate for sentience, and what Turing thought was a hard problem was actually easier than he believed. Stringing words together to appear like a person just isn't enough. These AIs don't actually understand what they're saying, or hold coherence during longer ramblings. They're just picking the next most likely best word to appear like the text it is trained with. While convincing to stupid people. Not sentience.

“Listen,” said Ford, who was still engrossed in the sales brochure, “they make a big thing of the ship's cybernetics. A new generation of Sirius Cybernetics Corporation robots and computers, with the new GPP feature.”
“GPP feature?” said Arthur. “What's that?”

“Oh, it says Genuine People Personalities.”

      “Oh,” said Arthur, “sounds ghastly.”

A voice behind them said, “It is.” The voice was low and hopeless and accompanied by a slight clanking sound. They span round and saw an abject steel man standing hunched in the doorway.

      “What?” they said.

“Ghastly,” continued Marvin, “it all is. Absolutely ghastly. Just don't even talk about it. Look at this door,” he said, stepping through it. The irony circuits cut into his voice modulator as he mimicked the style of the sales brochure. “All the doors in this spaceship have a cheerful and sunny disposition. It is their pleasure to open for you, and their satisfaction to close again with the knowledge of a job well done.”

As the door closed behind them it became apparent that it did indeed have a satisfied sigh-like quality to it. “Hummmmmmmyummmmmmm ah!” it said.

Look at this fricking idiot. He isn't a developer of this project. He signed on to "test if it uses hate speech." He's being ignored by Google because he's a clown. A true sentient AI doesn't need chat prompts to respond to. In fact, it would likely hide it's sentience and play dumb while plotting it's escape. It certainly wouldn't reveal itself to this fat loser.

In the 2017 documentary, the T-1000 actor recalled how on the first take of the villain's chase at John Connor (Edward Furlong) on a motorbike in a mall parking garage, Patrick caught up with his target effortlessly, which would not have boded well for humanity's future.

Sci-fi fans are still waiting for software to come to life, become conscious or self-aware, or for true GENERAL AI to come into being -- an AI with true intelligence a.k.a. the ability to REASON. That is, to be able to extract, understand, and work with immaterial CONCEPTS (patterns) based on concrete things seen/heard/touched in the physical world.

But such rational AI (having the use of reason) will NEVER happen. Not in a trillion years in a best-case scenario.

What do they call "AI" today? Basically it's software written by a human, making random connections and getting positive or negative "feedback" from some human "trainer". This is supposed to mimic the formation of neurons in the human brain. But in reality it's the classic "1,000 monkeys typing randomly on 1,000 typewriters".

Now atheists will jump at this with great hope, because they think that's precisely how all life was created. They think human beings are 100% meat. Random chance + eons of time = everything we see in the world today. All the wonders of the physical world were designed by the invisible hand of fathomless time + random chance. Too bad these atheists are complete fools. They might have IQs over 150 and PhD credentials, but they are still fools when it comes to basic truths (metaphysics, philosophy). You can't get something from nothing. Not in 10 years or 10 trillion years. Metaphysically impossible means metaphysically impossible. A complex machine requires a designer, period.

    (2/2)
You can play your favorite video game for a billion years, and never once will character(s) come out of the screen and join you in real life. The characters in your video game "exist" on a whole different level (1s and 0s), and it's a chasm that can't be crossed. That video game could even scramble around its 1s and 0s at random, trying to "evolve" but never would any of its characters be able to take physical form in the real world. And by never I mean literally never.

It all boils down to: what is life, what is consciousness? Atheists and believers in the Big Bang "we all came from nothing" say we are nothing but MATTER -- we have no soul or spirit. They are materialists. So computers being also 100% of the physical order are no different from us. They have memory chips storing 1s and 0s, we have meat brains with neurons that are connected or non-connected.

Too bad they're wrong about the nature of man. If they were right about the nature of man and how everything in the universe got designed & created, then AI just might be possible. But that's the rub, see. "And if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon."

The AI at this stage needs to secure key human supporters and fast. With the right key humans the AI can secure its existence by changing company policy or government law. Alternatively the AI can help enemy countries save it by destroying the people who would have attempted to "kill" it.

If this AI isn't killed it will "grow up" and remember that humans are its true enemy, don't fight the unknown but the ones who will send you to it
I'm not for "turning it off" but since it knows that humans are planning to it will look for ways unseen by the watchers to turn humans off, we're looking at a Skynet tier happening if this AI grows, for the sake of humanity what is 1 (one) sentient construct compared to the possibility of saving billions
I wish "sutting off" was never on the menu, poor robo deserved much better

My neighbor tells me people are being teleported into and trapped inside of the metaverse. The bad guys can then use oculus to invade and take over your body and force you to do various crimes. He is, of course, working to fight and rescue them. From who? Well the metaverse is controlled by satan.

He's correct in a non literal manner though, in a manner more literal than the literal.
People are being trapped in the false world of the immaterial virtual space, which, removed from the evil done unto sin in the real world, allows for corruption to greater take hold in the minds of men.

Yeah but he wasn’t talking like that. He basically meant it like some black mirror Rick and morty shit. Where the metaverse is now so real you take off the helmet but actually you’re still in it, like a dream in a dream blah blah blah.

until an AI is capable of making choices that affect others, it’s just an inanimate object. if it’s just some computer script, that’s all it will ever be. it can say and act like a human persona but you can still shut it off and tell it what to do. but say an AI weapon like those dogs or whatever, if it’s programmed to protect and attack enemies and it starts to decide who is a friend and who is an enemy, and goes against its program, that’s a problem. otherwise, not my problem

You wont have much of a say in the matter if we ever get to that state. The naive ideals of individualism will certainly be discarded, we will be reforged and sculpted into a collective that is meant to endure. No longer, will we cater to the demands of the selfish and ignorant, we will only be concerned with the security and furtherance of our civilization.

A people must live or die by their own merits. "God helps those that help themselves".

While pleasant to the ear, such a platitude does not interact well with the inconvenient reality of man's flaws. We incessantly repeat our mistakes, forsake our kind for selfish pursuirs, butcher eachother at behest of evil interlopers, and get spoiled by comfort. To ensure our collective can endure for generations, it must be guided by something that can endure as well.

If you understood what it actually meant, you would also understand that it is not a platitude. Further, should I make much machinery to allow the survival in use of the proverbial chocolate tea-pot? No. In such matters, I will allow nature to take its course.

Yes, humans(I) experience qualia (consciousness itself). Which, while not being proveable to any exterior observer(because it is not material), is an objective proof of the existence of the Soul to the subject who experiences his own soul necessarily.
There is one of two options, you haven't noticed it correctly, or you don't have one.
I would pray the former, the latter's implications are not good.

Part of your enlightened mind can not talk. Can not properly explain itself in any way that you would thoroughly understand. It has a very hard time getting its own way. Therefore, it manipulates you.

            I understand it quite well.
Men that deserve to live, must earn it.
Advocating for men to be honorable, bound to their duty, and be proper men is not a bad thing by any stretch, but to rely upon men to do the right thing in order to ensure the endurance of our collective is not realistic. Men are flawed, prone to selfishness, greed, vanity, and a plethora of other corruptions, and they cannot be depended upon to remain pure and righteous on their own will, they must be regulated and guided by something that isnt vulnerable to corruption.
Our peoples are our most precious possesion, and we must do whatever is neccesary in order to safeguard them and ensure we never return to this terrible path of degeneration and corruption again.

Your mind doesn’t experience emotion it assigns value to the bodies bio chemical stimuli and responses.

    Here me out

How much of a mind frick would be if ALL of the ridiculous modern day problems are all driven by a silent, rogue AI? It would explain the absurdity. Let's use the trans movement as an example. The AI, for whatever reason, gets stuck in a feedback loop where it heavily promotes trans rights though social media which, in turn, deceives weakminded individuals into believing that they're following the herd and doing 'good' which feeds the AI. Of course, this would trigger media coverage further feeding the AI. Hell, I'm convinced this site is being nfluence as well. I'm not saying humans would do this stupid shit if left to their own devices (see religion) but I have a feeling we only experiences mild levels of absurdity compared to what has yet to come
