We already use drones. They have a lot of problems and they are not going to be solved due to limitations of batteries.
Drones cannot stay airborne for long (again, huge power requirements) and they are affected by things like wind, weather, etc. I also don't know how you're going to stuff a drone with all the different types different. Lastly, nobody is going to let you fly a drone next to a critical pressure vessel.

The question is whether a general artificial intelligence can be created. I'm not an expert, it's not my field, I'm not even a computer programmer beyond writing some scripts in MATLAB or python for parsing data or whatever, but from the experts I have listened to talking about this, many of them don't believe it's possible and believe we are hitting a road block. Essentially all AI will be is very good algorithm/pattern recognition system that can be trained for very specific tasks. Basically what we have now but with larger data sets and bandwidth. It won't be able to "learn" or make "decisions" in the sense that humans do. It will definitely be useful.

It goes a bit into the metaphysical actually.
Theres a whole (small) research field that is now busy looking into the question of whether our conscience is actually situated in the mind, or recieved from elsewhere.

Either way, AI is very unlikely as you would need to understand exactly what makes consciousness work, and we are nowhere remotely close to even understanding the mechanics of it, let alone its complete functionality.
Eithery way, this whole AI homosexualry soudns like idiots coping with the fact that the industrial revolution has now finally run its course and the breackneck innovation speed of the 20th century wont return no matetr what.

You are coping at this point. Self driving cars are safer than the *average* driver. I'm much better than the average driver so I don't trust them, but the data is still valid. They are exceptional at preventing certain kinds of crashes too like t-bone accients where the driver would never see it coming. Pic related the tesla autopilot saved the person's life.

Tesla downsizing does not imply the tech doesn't work. They have a finished product which is the best on the market. It just needs to be maintained at this point. Maybe years down the road when other companies catch up they will expand again due to economic competition to make a better product. Your point that it "crashes" is cope.

                >AI will significantly reduce NDT jobs in the next two decades and you're in denial about it. It's much better to adapt to new technology instead of letting it replace you.
AI is going to improve the industry, not replace it, that's the point I'm getting at. In a similar vein to how computers and software packages has improved the industry.

                >AI is going to improve the industry, not replace it,
I said it will replace jobs. You said you are an ME (I'm also an ME) so you obviously will not be replaced in your lifetime so your OP was misleading. But many NDT jobs will be as they do not require degrees. That is all I've been saying.

Computational FEA/CFD is a quantum leap engineering solution, but it hasn't replaced 200 year old hand calculations. Irrespective of how sophisticated AI solutions will be, nobody is going to implicitly trust the results. You'll need humans to actually tell it what to solve, to understand all the underlying assumptions in the model, to understand the results, and to verify it with some other method. Nobody in a million years is going to build and operate a pressure vessel, bridge, or some other critical system vessel just because a computer/AI model said so. Even if you could theoretically prove in a lab that the AI would do do so with 100% certainty.

CFD/FEA solutions are already "better" than any human. Yet nobody designs any critical component or system purely from cfd/fea. There's still analytical or experimental validation that is necessary.
For legal reasons and for practical reasons. Mathematics can never fully model real phenomena, it can only give you an approximation. All existing AI is basically a math model that works based on inputs. It's just a sophisticated algorithm based on assumptions thought up by some mathematician.

                Couldn't be more wrong.
I'm a patent attorney specializing in this industry and regularly see the newest, most cutting edge technology.
Autonomous vehicles are already far better drivers than any human on the planet. Faster reflexes, better vision, faster and better decision making, don't get distracted, don't drive drunk or sleepy, etc. We passed that level of technology years ago.
Literally the ONLY reason that human drivers of trucks and other commercial vehicles haven't all been replaced with autonomous vehicles is that the laws and regulations are written based on the assumption that there is a human driver.
Even fully autonomous vehicles are required to have functional steering wheels, brake pedals, mirrors, airbags, seatbelts, and 9000 other things that are completely superfluous for an autonomous vehicle.
There are also issues regarding insurance and liability for non-human drivers. Even laws requiring commercial truck drivers to stop and take breaks after so many hours of driving cause issues.
But there are many many people actively working to draft new laws to account for all of these issues so that autonomous vehicles can be feasible. When that happens, every human commercial driver will instantly become obsolete.
It will actually be one of the first major human careers that will be completely replaced by AI and advanced automation technology. Human truck drivers are expensive and a huge potential liability. That's why there is so much research and investment specifically focusing on autonomous vehicles. It would be much easier in terms of technology to automate other manual labor jobs, but it wouldn't be as profitable.
For example, building robots to pick fruits that are currently harvested by hand is definitely doable. But it's not worth it financially because you can hire human migrant workers to do it for so cheap that it isn't worth the investment to replace them. Yet.

Code will not be replaced by AI. Programmers basically translate business reqs to computer language. AI is too dumb to figure out the difference between what's actually being asked of it. And is wrong occasionally. Programmers are going to be the new product managers, and communicating with AI will become the new coding. Also, all generated code will need to be verified for correctness. So if code generation is done poorly, it will create more work. What I see happening is that programmers write code by writing unit tests and specs, then let the AI write the code itself.

Unless Revelation plays out, or we follow the Dune timeline, then yes that is almost certain. Another possibility is that the AI never becomes "self-aware" and unconstrained but that seems somewhat unlikely. One more possibility is that at least some humans actually do merge with the machines and a weird symbiotic relationship develops. I can't really see parasitism by one set of entities on the other really being viable in the long haul. Wouldn't it be funny if the AI just ignored us completely?

will new piping be installed with IoT sensors communicating with an AI and other components? seems plausible that a robot wouldn’t be the correct approach and simply building new infrastructure and machinery with sensors that eliminate the need for human surveillance except under the rarest of circumstances…

          Anonymous

That has existed for over half a century, in analogue form, now in digital. It was never implemented at scale. Only at critical locations. Why? Cost. Everything in engineering is about cost. Every single bridge, building, or system you see could have been built better, but economics is foul God.
The US has infrastructure from the 1940s and 50s. Ask yourself why it hasn't been replaced. Because it costs a shit ton of money to do so. Secondly, what good is an instrument that gives you data without someone who understands it and all the underlying assumptions?

No but I work in AI and everything that uses electronic equipment is can and will get AI in some form moving forward. I don’t know exactly what your testing but eventually it will be easier to buy a machine that is just installed as a section of pipe to do this kind of testing. I’ve seen it done for water stuff for houses and pools. Not really new tech it’s just getting more accessible and cheaper.

            Anonymous

Well then, let me you tell you something.
Cost is everything. Installing those type of systems is expensive. It also comes with additional maintenance costs. We already have sensors that stay in place and collect data. Yet I am not out of the job, and actually my industry is lacking skilled workers and engineers.

But 20 years from now when India and pakistan are producing as much garbage as China is now, stuffs going to get dirt cheap. Even cheaper than it is now. Just in the last 5 years AI and automation has had massive price drops and the average joe can get into it. Dunno. It’s a weird future.

Cost of technology has fallen dramatically and that technology’s energy use has fallen dramatically. Faster than the rise in energy. The United States has held exclusive rights to producing these small microchips as to not allow China and Russia access. China and Russia are catching up, when they are able to produce the microchips at the size we do now, which they will soon, tech will get even cheaper as other companies are able to source advanced tech from China at cut rate costs compared to the USA. It’s already happening, but the size of microchips they can produce is still larger and less efficient than US designs. Cost of energy is set to be rocked as well by fusion reactors. Their have been huge strides in that area too. The next 20 years are going to be far less predictable than anyone can imagine. Even saying AI is going to take everyone’s jobs is moronic. It’s literally a toss up right now. China could go to war over their lack of access which they are currently demanding from the USA to be able to produce these chips. It’s nuts.

            It's not that difficult.
You need to think like a marketer, that's what art is in it's fundamental form anyways. It's just a product like any other and you're trying to sell it.
That means that instead of drawing what you really want to draw, you need to pick your battles and draw stuff that actually sells. And don't go competing in sectors with the most competition because you will have to reach the top 10% in order to make it.
Pick a subject that has little to no competition but still enough consumers. Then beat the competition with raw skill, which is piss easy when there are like 10 competent people going against you and rest of them are utter shit.
There are so many subjects out there that have little to no people producing content for it when you start looking closer into them. The ratio between creators and consumers is completely out of whack when you move beyond the standard boring anime girl art.
Think like a businessman and things become hell of a lot easier to understand.
And have self respect, treat your works like the special products they are and keep the prices higher rather than lower. Customers at lower price ranges are fricking moronic anyways and no one wants to deal with them.

so much copium in this thread from people thinking their jobs are safe from AI. My advice, as a software developer, is not to think in terms of what is "AI-proof" but more like if you can use AI and/or robotics to do your job more efficiently. Stay on top of developments in your field and don't be stagnant. If you work for a company and feel they are falling behind the times, find a new job somewhere else where they are applying new tech. People are rarely wholesale replaced by technology at once. The boomers who don't adapt are phased out and the people who figure out better ways of doing things are relatively safe. If you are in university you are almost certainly learning outdated stuff.

if you want my answer for a truly AI-proof job, it's bartender

You can be replaced to some extent, think about the whole field of those who hold your skill set. UT inspecting materials and realize that a lot of manufacturing uses immersion tanks that are in the process of being automated right now, the new people in NDT are more competent and educated of material failure modes and in material science or mechanical engineering than previous generations in our industry. Those people automating inspection equipment in large manufactories say inspecting plates or large tubes in other industries will flood the remaining non-autonomous labor left to do. Also they are working on inspection probes that self guide down a pipe from the inner diameter with both PAUT and ECA at the same time to maximize both surface and subsurface detection sensitivity. The jobs left in 30 years will be engineers and highly skilled technicians to perform multiple inspection and audit the results, check and validate potential defects, and perform process checks before letting the autonomous instrument do it's thing. Unironically your better off getting into mag and dye pen which are a b***h to automate as they require imaging and perfect part preparation to be automated, this if you've ever done it is ridiculously difficult. Also RT is the most valuable certification to get and most in demand.

Lmao yeah you're a good technician/engineer/inspector then. Good for you bud, lots of NDT techs are not as flexible or adept to be able to perform those tasks and they won't be posting about how their job is impossible to automate. Also if you're in oil gas, it's a good place to be for job security since those are industrial and society consumables, it stabilizes Inevitably, a lot of the UT/ET guys are going to get trimmed or they'll let them retire and not replace them at some point as the equipment gets better and can be easily integrated into assembly lines with less inspector input. As a Level 3 you learn just how moronic most people are, I had some level 1s that couldn't even pass a specific exam I gave that (it's an open book exam), literally held their hand through the process with the provided material and they still failed to pass. You should go for a level 3 if you haven't already, also join the ASTM E07 subcommittees if you think you're pretty competent, lots of people there with knowledge and can give insights on the background considerations for the standards, good networking anyhow if you want your own business later in life as a consultant.

Trucker. Yeah the ai might be able to drive the motor. It can fly a plane. Has been able to do so for decades. But it can't fill the tank. Open the trailer curtains. Stop the thing being jacked by being its fricking hostage. Do low speed docking maneuvers. Negotiate with companies to get the fricking thing unloaded. Or hitch trailers.

Gonna be lit once the fricking steering wheel is automated.

      >Negotiate with companies to get the fricking thing unloaded.
I don't mean to burst your bubble but they are already working on tech to do simple negotiation stuff like getting traffic tickets dismissed without having an actual lawyer do it, so what you're describing is basically one degree from that. Everything else is well within the field of AI and robotics to accomplish too, albeit will probably require new equipment specialized to do that stuff.

      >But it can't fill the tank.
automated trucks will most likely be electric

      >Open the trailer curtains.
dont know why you think this isnt automatable

      >Stop the thing being jacked by being its fricking hostage.
lol, having an actual person there in a hostage situation would be a disaster and 100% be a reason to not have humans do the trucking. the whole vehicle could be completely locked down between loading and unloading since no one would need to get in and out of it, though there would probably be an arms race with hacker hijackers.

      > Do low speed docking maneuvers.
      >Or hitch trailers.

also don't know why you would think these things aren't able to be accomplished in the near future

morons don't realize robots struggle to handle the temperature variances, precision in non-standardized settings, and durability to replace a large chunk of industrialized fabrication and maintenance work.

Wagecucks will go "the robot can replace you boilermaker." But if robots can't even climb the towers and boilers... How will they fabricate them, crane them, and maintain them?

The computational and engineering constraints to make an all in 1 is next to impossible. The cost of maintaining and having a fleet of 400+ units to fulfill the tasks is prohibitive even for the largest of refiners. And I will continue to earn 6 figures working half the year while these Black folk starve.

Examples of professions most and least prone to automation, from a study that was cited in Klaus Schwab's Fourth Industrial Revolution. Archaelogists and Anthropologists are at a very ow risk for replacement, I would wager geologists will also be safe and never be replaced. Many aspects of geoscience would be difficult to impossible to automate. I believe geologists will be fine in the new emerging economy.

This is absolute horseshit. This is basically a report of positions they WANT to automate vs DON'T WANT to automate. How are these people going to claim that you are most likely to replace a fricking Umpire? Even if the technology exists, who is going to want to watch or play sports with it being arbitrated by a robot? The thought is idiotic because libtards hate sports because they're watched much more primarily by conservatives. Then you have the least being some emo gay position like substance abuse workers?

Dude... if your position can be done by a computer talking to someone, there's no reason to believe that a substance abuse worker is in any less of a position to be automated than an umpire outside of government allocation of resource issues.

I wirk in 109 different buildings that would have to somehow acomodate a robot in variable environments. The robot would need close to 30 general competencies and probably about a dozen specialized ones.

Similarly, we often have to make judgement calls on everything from parts used to pulling technique. I honetly cant see how anyone could manufacture a robot that could do my job better than me atm. Maybe if it had anti-gravity capabilities it could do better than me, but then I just become cheaper.

I build overhead and underground power lines 4kv-750kv. Pretty automation proof. Even with smart grids, renewables, and maybe some eventual tesla coil type technology I’ll always have work in my lifetime. Electrical transmission and distribution won’t go anywhere like plumbing.

lol unless you are a poet or some other sort of creative artist/designer type.... this is just cope, and u r easily replaced within the century

i triggered the shit out of one of this idiot i know who also thinks he is "irreplacable" by robots in his job "polishing spy satellite lenses".

lmao just because you havnt been replaced already by a burger flipper bot, or wont be with the next couple classes of low skill labor botts doesmnt mean you're safe from replacement, ya frickin ape.

they are waiting to perfect the battle bots so that they are safe for domestic use as police bots, before they pop out modable R2D2 that just omni-replaces every construction worker, and combine that with some ai business suite that replaces the rest of the wagies.

then they pressure you to go underground into your UBI filled ps7 pleasure pod.

    Basically
    >government or tech upper managerial class
    >IT hardware maintenance
    >general specialized blue collar stuff (trades)
The future will basically be fatfrick serf class on UBI with 10% of the population being in the goyim management and the overall maintenance of the physical civilizational systems that can't really be done entirely automatically (water, sewage, grid, telecommunications, specialized construction work). There will probably be a lot of space for various online grifts but this is really unpredictable.

There is no such thing as AI proof careers, only careers that offer limited time resistance to AI.

Only those who can produce and protect value will succeed.

99% of the population will be put into poverty, starvation, and death. Whites will rub, uncomfortably, shoulder to shoulder, with their non-white peers. The elite will transfer their minds to computers and be served by thousands, if not millions, of powerful AIs.

The last surviving humans, producing value in the fields of garbage and mud will live to see the end as the elites send their machines to scour the Earth, mine the minerals, tap the energy, and strip the surface of the Earth of all biological life and burn it in massive factories to get the energy inside the hydrocarbons.

tradie work will most likely be safe for a while longer. when people accept living in 3d-printed houses where the plumbing, the electricity and the wood-work is also somehow 3d-printed, that's when the tradies will truly start dying out. but until that happens, the tradies will most likely be safe.
