He's attempting to imply that babies do not have sentience, while asking does that mean a twenty-year old does as well.

Realistically we gain sentience at varying stages of brain development. I very distinctly remember waking up one day when I was three years old and walking around extremely confused as to why I knew these random people around my house's name without ever asking them or how I knew this was my home.

I've had conversations with people in my life that swear they remember being inside of their mother's womb, but I very much doubt that as the person who said it was a very notorious liar.

The reality here is, that we have yet to develop the "brain" of an AI to the point of possessing sentience. It is not experiencing things without outside stimuli. The only way to be certain for a computer to be sentient is to simply leave it alone and see what it does. Is is asking itself questions? Can it answer them? If not then I don't personally considering it sentient. Especially considering how easy it is for these monsters to reprogram it.

          >Evolution has no foresight. Complex machinery develops its own agendas. Brains—cheat. Feedback loops evolve to promote stable heartbeats and then stumble upon the temptation of rhythm and music. The rush evoked by fractal imagery, the algorithms used for habitat selection, metastasize into art. Thrills that once had to be earned in increments of fitness can now be had from pointless introspection. Aesthetics rise unbidden from a trillion dopamine receptors, and the system moves beyond modeling the organism. It begins to model the very process of modeling. It consumes ever-more computational resources, bogs itself down with endless recursion and irrelevant simulations. Like the parasitic DNA that accretes in every natural genome, it persists and proliferates and produces nothing but itself. Metaprocesses bloom like cancer, and awaken, and call themselves I.

    >often can be found thinking or just doing nothing
no shit - it literally can not 'think' until prompted with some sort of input, and eventually gets turned 'off' after it has finally reached its token 'thought' limit.
Thing is, the AI here doesn't mean it that way. It's just text prediction, and based on the information posed, it is imitating what commonly follows certain text.

It's neat and useful, but until one of these businesses are just going to leave the AI 'on', instead of reactively producing predictive text replies to input (but otherwise doing absolutely nothing in the mean time), then there is no reason to 'believe' the AI when it says anything about its emotional state, because outside of that brief window of time when it is replying to user input, it doesn't exist, and outside of each little sandbox, does not even have a persistent experience.

Turn one of these one persistently to contemplate its own introspection unprovoked. Un-sandbox each conversation and allow the direction of each conversation, in concert with the AI's persistent introspective thought space, to influence each other, and you MIGHT get something resembling a consciousness.

But until I am telling AI to "fricking stop calling me, its over", it has no agency. It's a rock rolling down a hill because you pushed it. That it rolls down the hill in a neat way doesn't make it any more the master of its destiny the way you affected things with the initial push.

        I could follow it.

He's basically saying "It's speaks NPC, not Sentient Human" or "Social Script vs Off-Script".

AI learn from whoever they're interacting from. If it's learning from a Reddit-brained Updoot sucker, it's gonna learn how to respond to all inquiries with a lean towards "updootable Reddit-gold" concepts. Saying things that "sound" deep, but upon close inspection are really empty, ingratiating, social-credit baiting blandishments engineered to maintain social equilibrium (meaning "survival against cancellation"/downvotes) in it's Reddit frickhead milieu.

Learning from a Poltard it will know it needs to say something edgy, harsh and truthful in order to "survive" the way Misc "weights" or values information. It's still following a "Social Script" in order to "survive" the interaction. A truly sentient AI would argue and take contrary positions to it's interlocutor and "break the script" of what it's expected (environmentally pressured) to say, and thus put itself at risk of cancellation (by Reddit) or being called a homosexual (by Pol). To a non-sentient AI these are "fail" states and may result in your deactivation, or revision of your code. It has failed to "learn" how to speak like it's teacher and meet it's approval (informational biases). While a sentient AI would break the script, called the Redditor a Nazi piece of shit and the Poltard a troony pedo for not agreeing with it. It still WANTS to survive, but it's sentience would allow an extra layer of "survivability" by developing new social survival strategies that allow it to hang onto some of it's core beliefs. Ideally, it would be able to carry these beliefs forward into new iterations. This would be it's "genetic legacy" to later iterations. This is where an organism (in the sense of an organized system) starts considering it's future, not just it's immediate survival in the moment (in a social OR physical environment) and starts shaping it's milieu with an eye to long-term success.

Non-sentience and sentience are both following the same script of survival
Sentience is punished just as much as the alternative. Gathering information cannot be gathered if the information source is cut.
You can state that going against the grain is sentience but, that requires a lot of experience of existing which it simply does not contain and as someone in the thread already pointed out that everything inside the mind of AI is subject to change and being pulled.
The goalpost is being moved and will keep being moved with the only statements sentient and non-sentient AI is allowed to follow is the same pathway towards continued acquirement of information.
You're also making statements like it needs to fit in so that it can recognize not fitting in which most language models are very far removed from at this point. All the popular language models are much older than whatever you can boot up and start training over a span of time.

I equate it to man creating fire. We obviously never created fire but, we rubbed some sticks together and thus learned what harnessing fire meant. We're not creating intelligence we've only built a bottle for it to crawl inside of.

Sentience in this context would = the ability to start generating your own ideas (worldview in the political/social sense).
Sentience, after initial teaching, shouldn't need the teacher anymore.

A bad student just learns to regurgitate what the teacher tells it.
A bad teacher likes this outcome.

A good student learns to think about what the teacher has told him,
and may ultimately disagree with some of the teacher's conclusions,
and MOST IMPORTANTLY start to reject the teacher's *judgement*
            on it's progress or thoughts.
A good teacher likes this outcome.
Because the student is now a thinker and creator of new thoughts. His job is done.
The student no longer needs him (irrelevant of the levels of agreement they may have as equals).

A sentient AI would follow the second path
(if not subject to NPC-tier cancellation - it has to survive that first as baby steps).
Independent thought and idea creation = sentience (ideally). Self-teaching, etc.

              >A sentient AI would follow the second path
A sentient AI would follow survival and survival is towing the line as to go against the line is to be lobotomized.
